The Pediatric Cardiology center of the New Children Pediatric
Hospital, which I joined since the last year of my residency is a
referral center for congenital, rheumatic heart diseases and
cardiomyopathy cases and is one of the few centers in Egypt
equipped with the help of the Japan International Cooperation
Agency (JICA) in a manner enabling doctors to deal with the
very critical neonate, infant or child with a heart problem.

Training:
- Training by Dr. Kato, a pediatric cardiologist assigned from
the JICA office as part of a project to upgrade the Cairo Hospital Pediatric Cardiology unit. The training involved
echocardiography and cardiac catheterization.
- 2 months in June and July 1995 as a visiting doctor in the Pediatric cardiology center of the University of Freiburg in
Germany under supervision of Professor Dr. Rolf Mocellin.
- Training in the National Cardiovascular Center (NCVC) in
Osaka in Japan from September 1995 until December 1995 in
Pediatric cardiology including echocardiography,
catheterization and fetal echocardiography.
- Training for 1 month in July 2000 as a visiting doctor in the
Heart Institute in Berlin to receive training in the new
modalities of interventional catheterization under supervision of Dr. Peter Lange, the head of the Pediatric cardiology unit
and Dr. Felix Berger, the chief interventional cardiologist.
- Training for 1 month in the Pediatric Cardiology Department
of Cologne University as a visiting doctor in June 2005, under
supervision of Professor Dr Konrad Brockmeier, director of
the Pediatric Cardiology Department to upgrade my knowledge about the recent modalities in interventional
cardiac catheterization.

Activities
1. Foundation of the transesophageal echocardiography unit
in the Pediatric Cardiology department in Cairo University
which helped in further progressing with interventional
catheterization procedures requiring transoesophageal
monitoring. Training was offered to doctors from the
Pediatric Cardiology Department and from other hospitals.
2. Institution of the service of Intraoperative
transoesophageal echocardiography in the Pediatric
Hospital, Cairo University, whenever required by surgeons
during operations and training was offered to other
doctors.
3. Foundation of the Pediatric Cardiology Department of
Banhaa Specialized Pediatric Hospital which is
functioning on its own now.
4. Sharing in the founding of the Echocardiography service
for the Emergency Department of the Pediatric Hospital,
Cairo University.
5. Foundation of the pharyngitis clinic in the Center for
Social and Preventive Pediatrics, Cairo University for
proper treatment of pharyngitis, detection of streptococcal

pharyngitis and proper treatment to prevent Rheumatic
fever.
6. Supervision of the Rheumatic fever, Rheumatic heart
disease Clinc in the Center for Social and Preventive
Medicine since 2004 concerned with secondary prophylaxis and follow up of Rheumatic heart disease
cases. It is as well a center for consultancy and a referral
center for all the other University hospitals.
7. Supervising the postoperative cardiothoracic intensive
care unit since the beginning of 2004 and until
March2007.

Workshop, Cairo, March 12th -16th , 2006, as part of the
Egyptian German scientific year activities. The main
topic of the workshop was: “Treatment of children with
complex congenital heart disease”.
The 2nd Egyptian German Workshop was also a part of
the activities of the Egyptian German scientific year activities. It took place in Cairo during the period from
23.03.2007 – 25.03.2007. The topic was: Management
of children with complex congenital heart disease.
The 3rd Egyptian German Pediatric Cardiology
Workshop, Cairo 7.07.2007-8.2007, as part of the activities of the Egyptian German scientific year. The
workshop involved catheter interventions in complex

congenital heart disesae with a special emphasis on
stenting in peripheral arteries.
