Residential Visit
Our Year 5/6 pupils are very excited now they have been to their information
session about the residential trip to Ambleside Youth Hostel. Please note that the
final balance payments for this trip need to be in by 24th June, as school needs to
pay the balance the following week. Please can you ensure that the emergency
contact forms are completed and returned as soon as possible.
Together we can achieve and celebrate success
General News
We are pleased to say that the children started the summer term with a really
positive attitude towards getting down to some hard work.
Thankfully Easter this year came with some decent spells of good weather so that
the children could get outside more, this usually makes a difference.
May we remind you that all KS2 children need to be in school on time during the
week beginning Monday 11th May as this is when we will be involved in the Y6
tests and years 3,4 & 5 end of year tests in English and Maths.
Don’t forget to look out for our Leeds Half Marathon team of runners on the 10th
May. Please see the attached sponsor form. The money raised will be split
between Martin House Children’s Hospice and towards our school’s playground
equipment fund.
We would like to congratulate Mr & Mrs Binns and Theo on their new baby girl
who was born last Friday.
Leavers’ Service
This year we have planned for the leavers’ service or ‘Celebration Day’ as we
have now called it, to be on Friday 10th July from 2.30pm in the school hall.
Everyone is welcome to come along to this special assembly. The last day of term
is on Friday 17th July when the children can enjoy this day without the stress of
saying their goodbyes. We hope you would like these dates for your diaries.
School finishes at 3.00pm on this day.
Clubs
The clubs we have offered this term have been very well
subscribed to.
The cricket club started this week with Mr Corcoran from the
Harrogate Cricket Development Scheme. His enthusiasm certainly
got the children in the club actively involved in a game of cricket
by the end of the session.
Mr Biggs will be working on developing athletic skills in his
club in readiness for our Sport’s Day on Tuesday 7th July.
The gardening and computing clubs will start soon.
All clubs have over 20 pupils attending them, which
isn’t so bad considering we only have 50 pupils!
At the end of last term the Drama club put on an amazing
performance of The Tempest at Harrogate Theatre. Thank you to all
parents and family members who went along to these performances.
The children had a very intense day of touring the theatre, learning how
to perform in costumes, on a stage and under spotlights.
Curriculum
Life was very busy leading up to the Easter break. Class 3 had a great
day’s visit to Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum. The class
gained a good insight into how the Romans invaded and settled in
England. Vindolanda was a good example of how the Roman Army
adapted to our climate and organised their living accommodation. The
museum there provided many examples of artefacts from their everyday
lives, including a huge display of preserved original Roman sandals.
The class coped very well with the long journey and were very well
behaved throughout the trip.
Class 2 had a very exciting Egyptian workshop at the Pump Room
Museum in Harrogate. They learnt about the mummification process
through a practical session using a life sized fabric mummy. They had
the opportunity to handle original Egyptian artefacts and learnt about
their significance.
Class 1 had a great experience at Harlow Carr Gardens when they learnt
how to look for signs of different types of weather and the change in
seasons.
We would like to thank our P.T.A. for helping us to offer these
extra-curricular visits through their excellent fundraising. This term
Classes 1 and 2 will be visiting Saltburn on Wednesday 24th June.
Class 1 will learn about features of a seaside locality and Class 2 will
explore plants growing in different habitats at Saltburn Valley Gardens.
Class 3 will be learning about the history of our Kings and Queens
through visiting the Tower of London and the National Portrait Gallery
on London on Wednesday 17th June. The £25 voluntary contribution is
required no later than Friday 15th May.
PTA
We thank the P.T.A. for providing the Easter Eggs as prizes for our egg
decorating competition last term. Mr Biggs had the terrifying job of
judging all the amazing entries. See the examples of these on the back
cover. The Race Night on Sunday 15th March raised £401.00
This term the PTA are very busy with different fundraising events which
we hope you will be able to support. The Bag Packing at Sainsbury’s on
Saturday 25th April raised a fabulous £604.75. Thanks to the 18 children
and their parents who gave up some of their valuable spare time to help
raise this amount.
Future events:
Class 1 Bun Sale on Friday 1st May at 3.30pm
Ice Cream Fridays start on the 8th May outside in the front garden from
3.30pm. Ice-creams will cost 50p.
The Royal Oak in Dacre are hosting a Quiz Night and supper on Sunday
10th May all welcome.
On Sunday 17th May there will be the Car Boot Sale at Pateley Bridge

from Balsdons).
Finally, there is also to be an end of term celebration BBQ which will be
held from 5.30pm in the rear playground on Tuesday 7th July, after the
sport’s day. More details to follow nearer the time.
Sporting Events
Mr Chisem has continued to develop participation in sport through all
the organised sporting events that have been offered to us.
Mr Chisem will be applying for the Sainsbury’s School Games Gold
Award at the end of this term.
The Year 5/6 High 5 Netball team came fifth out of the six teams that
took part last term.
Tag Rugby was unfortunately cancelled due to bad weather.
The Year 5/6 Quick Sticks Hockey team worked really hard in a tough
tournament.
Last week the Year 1/2 football teams did so well that
one of the teams has gone through to the finals at
Harrogate High School next Thursday from 3.00pm
until 5.00pm
There are ‘Change 4 Life’ festivals taking place next month, details to
follow. Our school sport’s day will be held on
Tuesday 7th July at 1.30pm on the Max Pullen Field.
Mary Fisher’s 80th Birthday celebration
Mary was overwhelmed by the surprise party at school on Wednesday and was
even more surprised to find out that Will Smith and Nick Hancock from Stray FM
turned up to wish her a Happy 80th Birthday.
Lynda our cook and her helpers prepared a delicious spread of food for everyone.
The hall was decorated by Mrs. Parkin and Mrs. Burton and looked fit for a party.
Miss McKenzie made a cake modelled on Mary as the lollipop lady, all the
children were given a piece to take home.
Mary was very emotional throughout the whole time and was so
appreciative of the gifts that we presented to her comprising of B&Q and
gardening vouchers. She can now buy a new furniture set and some plants for
her patio.
Mrs. Binns had been very busy making the most beautifully
decorated memories book for Mary that everyone in school had
contributed towards. Mary took it home to read when she had a
quiet moment to herself. The day was very successful and
enjoyed by everyone, especially Mary.
V.E. Day Celebration
We now have the VE ‘Street Party’ tickets. The event takes place on
Saturday 9th May at Pateley Bridge Memorial Hall, 12.30 - 4.30pm.
There is no charge for this event. If your children are interested in
attending this special event, organised by the Royal British Legion
Nidderdale Branch, please collect your tickets from Janet in the office
by Wednesday next week as they need to know how many children to
cater for.
