Supplement to CV
My professional activities encompass a number of areas.
Immigrant Absorption and Integration on minorities
The first one is immigrant integration, which I have been pursuing since the beginning of my
studies at the Hebrew University. I was associated with research projects conducted during
the 1960s by the Department of Sociology, in particular the study of immigrant absorption in
moshavim (cooperative settlements).
During the 1970s I conducted a series of studies on the integration of immigrants
from the Soviet Union, in which the central theoretical issue was how political regimes affect
the personalities of their subjects.
I have edited four books that dealt with this theoretical issue: Between Two Worlds:
Soviet Children in Israel, The Soviet Man in an Open Society, and Children of the Perestroika
in Israel and Pacesetters and Dropout-Soviet Youth in Transition with Seffany Hoffman and
Bella Kotic
The four books were published in the United States in more than one edition. The
volumes provide both theoretical basis (which was written by myself )and empirical data
based on the theoretical model.
the integration of Russian immigrants
I also wrote with Shmuel Shamai and Zina Ilatov a book on integration of Russian
immigrants in a small community titled:Assimilation,Dialogue and Empowerment
The book was modified for Yekantrinburg University Press and published in Russian
language.
Two books about Mofet-Russian Educational Net works are going to be on the shelves in
April 2010/The books were written with the cooperation of Shmuel Shamai and Zina Ilatov
. I have traced dozens of studies conducted in Israel and outside Israel which refer
to my book. The Soviet Man in an Open Society appears in Citation Index numerous times.

In 1980 I conducted large scale research on Ethiopean children in the Educational
System. Two years later I conducted another research on Ethiopean youth in boarding
schools. I am currently conducting a number of studies on the integration of Russian
immigrants I participated in an international study, funded by the Volkswagen Foundation,
on the social attitudes of Russian teenagers in Germany, Russia, and Central Asia. In 2008 I
got a grant from TheAnti Drug Authority to study drug consumption among Russian
immigrant" youth.
In October 2001 I got a grant for the sum of 420000 shekels with Shamai and Ilatov to
study Russian social networks in the north.
My writings are found in syllabuses in America and Europe in courses on migration.
In addition to my activities as a researcher, I served as a Scientist in Residence of the
Ministry of Absorption.. ..
.
Youth Violence
A second field in which I am involved is that of youth violence .. I carried out two large
research projects on the subject and at the moment I am conducting a project on youth
violence among Russian immigrants.
In addition to my research in the area of youth violence, I serve as an advisor to the
Ministry of Education on prevention of violence I have authored a Director-General's circular
on the subject.
In cooperation with the officer for the prevention of violence at the Ministry of
Education, I designed a two-year course on the subject for counsellors. The first class
completed its work in June 1995.

In addition to my counseling work, I am called upon to help design interventions when
there are serious outbreaks of violence in schools
I published a book titled Violence As a social Phenomenon.
In 2008 I was a guest editor of Dapim on the subject of school violence
Since 2008 I am participating in a national project :Non-Violence City.
Social and Organizational Processes in Schools
The third area of my activity is centered around the social and organizational processes within
the school. I wrote two books on this subject entitled "Between Ethnic Community and
Ideological Community," and” The Story of Tali school- The Beginning of an Educational
Movement.”
These studies help me develop tools for evaluating educational systems, which I hope
to standardize. I formerly served as adviser to the Ministry of Education on the topic of school
evaluations.
I am also involved in studying school culture in Jewish and Beduin schools
Higher Education
At the moment I am involved in research on higher education. I just completed a
research on the development of post-secondary education in Israel.Recently I finished a
project on Bedouin female students at Ben Gurion University . student and published a book
:Weaving Tradition and Modernity with Kathy and Ismail Abu Saad.
