2011: Hispanosophy. Writer, producer and director.

SYNOPSIS What does it mean to be “Hispanic”? Is it being Spanish, Spanish-American, Latino, Latin-American, Hispanic-American, or perhaps Iberian? What role does language, art, music and literature play in identity formation? How does race contribute to our perceptions of Hispanicness? Hispanosophy is a combined documentary and representative fictionalized narrative film that explores these questions along with different notions of Hispanic identities, especially in Texas.

Guillermo Arriaga (writer of Amores perros, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, nominated for Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and BAFTA Award for Best Original Screenplay for 21 Grams, and recipient of the 2005 Cannes Best Screenplay Award for his screenplay for The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada), John Phillip Santos and Javier Negrete, among others, comment on these questions. These questions are illustrated in the lives of real people as well as fictional characters in the film: Molly is a Texan girl with strong emotional ties to Chile who feels Hispanic despite her slight non-native accent when speaking Spanish; López, also a Texan, is a bilingual young woman who is tired of people assuming that she is “American” who does not speak Spanish because of her fair complexion and blond hair; Jesús is a taxi driver who does not understand the richness of Hispanic ethnicity; Adela is a young professor who realizes maps and geography are not necessarily marks of identity; Dulce reflects upon the buying and selling of Hispanicness through food. They are all hispanosophers, Hispanics reflecting on and depicting the cultural richness and diversity of the Hispanic world. Hispanosophy was premiered internationally and nationally as follows:
