My Research topic was “Some Aspects of Smallholder Tea Production in Belgut Division of Kericho District, Kenya”. Awarded M.A. in Agricultural Geography, on 27th November, 2000.

a) Collaborating with ICPAC Experts to develop a Framework for Gender Integration in ICPAC-IGAD Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction- under this Framework, I have convened a number of Gender Forums during the Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum (GHACOF) to discuss practical ways of ensuring resilience for women, youth and children, civil society, People with Disabilities and the elderly. During these Gender Fora, there were also sessions to build capacity of women, youth and civil society organizations on issues

dealing with climate, climate variability and change, disaster risk reduction and resilience.

b) Documentation Expert to assist in the documentation of the existing ICPAC climate knowledge for the strengthening of regional climate and information management systems- Under these terms, I carried out the following:

Edited and formatted the reports

Reviewed the number format of ICPAC documents, and recommended how the exercise could be operationalised at ICPAC

A total of 140 reports and 680 other documents were dealt with during this period. The reports cover climate , climate change, climate services and climate atlases; stream flow/water resources management; Pilot Application Projects, Agriculture and food security, Media, Capacity Building, Disaster management, Malaria, Rift valley fever and other climate-sensitive diseases; Conflict Early Warning; Gender and Civil Society, Indigenous Knowledge; Institutional and Partners’ documents; and Marine and Coastal Programmes, among others. 7- ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES INVOLVED IN

1. The Maasai Mara Science and Development initiative (MMSDI) – I am one of the

founder members and a member of the Secretariat. MMSDI is a joint programme between the University of Nairobi, Maasai Mara University, Aarhus University in Denmark, Justus Liebig University in Germany, the Karen Blixen Club (Private sector) and the Mararianda Community in the Maasai Mara. The programme works towards the conservation of the Maasai Mara ecosystem. A number of research projects are already taking place under the umbrella of the MMSDI.

2. The IGERT project, where the University of Nairobi together with other stakeholders and University of Massachusetts Boston have a postgraduate training programme to: Train new generation of scientists and policymakers to find solutions for urbanized environments, and in engaging stakeholders,

including political leaders and the general public, Foster a culture of trans-disciplinary collaboration and communication among natural scientists, social scientists, governance scholars as well as business scholars, and Create enabling conditions and provide the necessary experience that will empower the coastal communities and to train I GERT Fellows to apply their innovative solutions across scales, geographies and political and economic contexts. I am currently one of the External committee members of one of the graduate students under the programme.

3. The United Nations University, University of Nairobi and Partner Universities Education for Sustainable Development (ESDA) programme and the Next Generation Researchers (NGR) Team member. The Programme in the University of Nairobi is directed towards finding solutions to sustainable urban development, with NGR acting as think-tanks for the African Continent.

1. Gender Analysis of the Mara Conservancies and communities in relation to

Natural Resource management and Livelihood sustainability

2. Pilot Survey on the Implementation of the Gender Policy at the College of

Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Nairobi

3. Food Production Coping Mechanisms: Rural Agriculture, Under-age farming

activities and related socio-economic Issues in Muhoroni Division of Nyando

District, Kenya. This was a follow-up research on PhD. findings, a paper was

prepared for publication.

4. Food Security and Poverty among small scale farmers in Nyando District of

Kenya, which examined food security at the household level and discussed

several interacting factors such as unfavourable weather, the role of farm size,

labour , and capital in household food production, the influence of household

size and the significance of household poverty. Several papers have been

prepared to publish the results.

5. Some Aspects of Smallholder Tea production in Belgut Divison of Kericho District,

Kenya, which examined the success of small-scale cash crop production in one of the most successful tea production areas in the country. The findings of this

research, that food insecurity still existed even among these farmers acted as an impetus for the PhD. Thesis

6. Environmental Epidemiology of Siaya District: Geographical Investigation of Disease Patterns, which dealt with disease distribution in the area, where food insecurity emerged as a major cause of many diseases.

July, 2011 to date: Soroptimist International (SI) Representative to UNEP, responsible

for the following:

Intervening during meetings, when possible, to ensure that debates and policies do not infringe on women’s rights.

In 2013, I applied and successfully obtained the Government of Kenya funding to implement a community project in 4 Counties (Nandi, Uashin Gishu, Kisumu and Kakamega) from the 25th May 2013 to the 29th May 2013. The Women Project, under the ‘Women and Climate Change Project’ of the Soroptimist International Union of Kenya and Denmark, benefited over 600 households, where each household planted at least 20 trees to conserve the environment. The Women received solar lanterns as an incentive to plant more trees.

Keeping in touch with government Delegates and Agencies, as well as other NGOs to investigate areas where Soroptimist International could offer help.

4. I worked with other colleagues from the University of Nairobi (Prof. Richard S.

Odingo, Dr. Samuel Owuor and Prof. Laban A. Ogallo) and was part of the Team that collaborated with Scholars from University of Massachusetts Boston (UMass Boston) (Lead Institution) to obtain a National Science Foundation Fellowship Award of US Dollars 3.1 million to finance a project known as “Integrated Graduate Education Research Traineeship (IGERT) –Coasts and Communities: Natural and Human Systems in Urbanizing Environments. The Principal Investigators in the programme include: Prof. Robyn Hannigan and Prof. Maria Ivanova. Participating organizations are MA Office of Coastal Zone Management, NatureServe, Conservation Law Foundation, Association of Flood Plain Managers, MA Water Resources Authority, MA Clean Energy Center, National Park Service - Boston Harbor Islands, New England Clean Energy Council, Massachusetts Division of Ecological Restoration, US Environmental Protection Agency - UMass Boston Urban Waters and Mystic River University Collaborative.
