PERSONAL DATA

Born in Siena 27th October 1975 Italian citizen. Married with three children

EDUCATION

After a degree in environmental economics I realized the relevance of data for answering environmental problems.

For this reason I successfully pursued a PhD in Applied statistics. My PhD thesis analyses research methods

(experimental designs) and estimation models (discrete choice model) which improve the standard of environmental

economics survey techniques. This work integrates the practice of statistics with the economic theory to improve the

assessment of environmental issues (e.g. water and air quality). One chapter of my thesis was published in the

Journal of Environmental Economics and Management in 2007. In 2010 I received the Elsevier award for the top-

10 most cited research paper in the period 2005-2009.

Ph.D. Applied Statistics, University of Florence (Italy) April 2005. Dissertation (in Italian): Stated Preference Method: experimental designs and random utility models. (Supervisors: R. Berni and R. Scarpa)

Degree (B.A.) in Environmental Economics, University of Siena (Italy) Nov. 1999. Honors: Summa

cum Laude. Thesis (in Italian): Contingent Valuation: theory, method and the case study of the railway Colle-Poggibonsi. (Supervisors: M. Franzini and M. Di Matteo).

RESEARCH INTERESTS

I am interested in answering policy questions using quantitative information and statistical methodologies grounded

in economic, environmental or ecological theory. In my research experience, I have successfully collaborated with

epidemiologists, geographers, scientists, hydrologists and economists. My main field of research are:

Environmental and ecological economics, economic valuation techniques, discrete choice models, experimental designs, simulation methods, welfare economics, costs-benefits analysis, decision-making and public policy, ecosystem services and accounting.

ENTERPRISE & ENGAGEMENT

During my career I have developed interdisciplinary skills and interest for inter- and intra- disciplinary research applying statistical methods and econometrics approaches to different fields (e.g. water management, biodiversity conservation). I successful collaborate to national wide research (UK or Italy) and to broader international context (e.g. developing countries and whole European Union). As a recognised expert in valuation, I have been an advisor for water management decision making, cultural services, transport facilities, biodiversity conservation policies and coastal management plans. Particularly fruitful it has been the collaboration with Cefas which strengthen the cooperation between natural scientists and economists on coastal and marine ecosystem services research especially through the new CCSUS (the new centre established between UEA and Cefas).
