Civilingenjör 1962 at KTH. Tekn Lic 1967 at KTH, Docent KTH, 1972, Professor at University of Lund 1974 and at 1986 at KTH Summary of main scientific accomplishments

The ideas underlying the work below have been mine although much of the work has been performed by my Ph.D. students and my co-workers. The numbers refer to the refereed journals. Numbers, Cxx, refer to refereed conference proceedings. 1. Fundamental work on countercurrent leaching in Kamyr pulp digesters. Mathematical

modelling, interpretation of lab and field experiments.(4,6,7) 2. Design, experiments and mathematical modelling of countercurrent adsorber using Activated

carbon or ion exchange resins (10,11,12,14,15) 3. Diffusion in the porous matrix of crystalline rocks. (16). This is one of the papers I value

most because it has changed the outlook of hydrologists, geologists and others who are concerned with solute transport in crystalline rocks. It is still often referred to as a fundamental paper. It has formed the basis much of our later work on radionuclide transport, modelling as well as lab and field experiments. Concept is fundamental to and now used in the SKB safety analysis of repositories for Spent nuclear fuel. It also emphasises the importance of the flow wetted surface, another fundamental concept introduced by us (51). A number of lab and field experiments has confirmed the idea (29,31,33,39,75). Concept is now used in the Swedish SKB and Swiss, Nagra, safety analysis of nuclear waste repositories

4. Shown that the notion of groundwater age is meaningless in many instances (19) because of matrix diffusion effects.

5. Channelling in fractured rocks. Another fundamental concept I have introduced (23), This has also led to a number of large scale and long time (>3 years) field experiments we have performed (22,27,43,44,52,53,54,55) Concept is now used in the SKB safety analysis

6. During 12 years been principle investigator for four multi-year, large-scale field experiments in the Stripa experimental mine. They were international, 7-9 nations, lead by the Nuclear Energy Agency of the OECD with a duration of 3-5 years. Principle investigator for one 4 year project financed by SKB. These were unique experiments and have lead to new insights. I am still invited to international geologic and hydrologic conferences to relate our findings. (39,43,44,53,54)

7. Introduced the concept and devised models of channel networks for flow and transport in fractured rocks and other strongly heterogeneous media (51,52,77,78,C27,C28,C33, C38) Concept is now used in the SKB safety analysis.

8. Identified the possible impact of radiolysis to enhance the dissolution of spent fuel in a repository (C11) and pursued it further by analysis of processes around uranium mines (40,58,67)

9. Applied a novel concept for vastly speeding up computations with a coupled geochemical and transport model based on pseudo stationary states (68,69)

10. Applied a novel concept based on compartment modelling with embedded analytical solutions to simply three-dimensional solute transport computations. Less than 50 ”cells” are needed instead of >100 000 ”cells” to attain comparable accuracy (56). Now used as a central code in SKB safety analysis.

11. Investigated transport, sorption and desorption of volatile organics in indoor air. Found that sorption phenomena play a central role in delaying the ventilation effects (46,47,48,49)

12. Applied the lessons learned in the nuclear waste field to study the processes in and leaching from deposits of ashes and slags (64,76,80,81,82,83 ) We have especially focused the long term chemical evolution and potential leaching of the systems
