1. Since 2006-2010 Principal Investigator for the research team titled Multiculturalism in education and work in the focus area Education and Social Change. My team has consisted of tree senior researchers, three pos-doctoral researchers, three doctoral students and two MA students. The team has been partly funded as follows:

• Funding (EUR 30 460) from the Academy of Finland for the visiting researcher from the Udmurt State University, Russia, to conduct the research on Competence Recognition and Employment as Experienced by Russian Immigrants in Finland, 2009-2010.

• Funding (EUR 400 000) from the Academy of Finland for leading the research project Recognition of Immigrants’ Workplace Competence, OPCE, 2009-2012.

2. Leading the research programme on Research on Internationalisation and Development in Education and Training (http://ktl.jyu.fi/ktl/english/research/ridet) (2003-2006). The research programme has had four foci: (1) empirical analyses of forms of internationalisation typical of educational and work organisations; (2) promotion of European knowledge formation based on trans-national cooperation in vocational education and training (VET); (3) promotion of trans-cultural knowledge development in more wide-ranging contexts of international cooperation and development; and (4) analyses of international educational development in the light of the goals of the UNESCO programme Education for All. The objective of the research programme has been to analyse (a) developing multicultural competence in teacher education; (b) teachers’ own perceptions of their cultural competence and learning; (c) the acquisition of multicultural competence on the job, and (d) instruction of Finnish as a second language and competence-based training for immigrants. The impact of the results of the research programme has been shown on the following areas: examining and re-defining intercultural/ multicultural learning, educational development and related concepts; optimising researching, teaching and learning processes; strengthening organisational and

institutional capacity in diversity promotion; and aligning policy and systemic improvements. The research projects examined multiculturalisation in education and training at the level of the implementation of educational policy and of the curriculum. Depending on funding and the phase of graduate studies, the number of persons of my research groups has varied from four to 25 members. The research team consisted of three professors, two senior researchers, two young researcher and doctoral students. Many international scholars visited the programme. The programme was partly funded as follows:

• Grant (EUR 41.830) from Academy of Finland for managing a foreign visiting scholar on Analysis on the Work-Related Education and Training System in Europe for Youth – Lessons for Iran. 2004-2005.

• Funding (EUR 87.180) from Academy of Finland. Managing the research project on Educated Girls in Tanzania: Socio-Cultural Interpretations of the Meaning of Education – Pre-Study. 2004-2006.

• Funding (EUR 133.190) from Academy of Finland. Managing the research project on Measuring Indicators of Sustainable Development in School Curricula: A Study of Ethiopia, Ghana and Nigeria. 2004-2005.

• Grant from Academy of Finland (EUR 16.000) for managing and organising Conference on Intercultural Education: Teaching and Learning for Intercultural Understanding, Human Rights and a Culture of Peace in June 2003.

• Funding (EUR 90.000) from the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs. Managing, inviting and organising the co-operation with the scholars from developing countries in intercultural education and peace education. 2003-2004.

3. Leader and principal investigator of the research programme in Learning at Work (www.jyu.fi/ktl/research/akto/) (1999-2002). Workplace learning was a new practice to be developed in vocational upper secondary and higher education at the turning point of the century in Finland. Research on learning at / through / to work was based on the assumption that students learn in teams and communities of experienced professionals, which has enabled them to use and apply their knowledge and skills in authentic situations and environments. The theoretical frameworks of the research team's studies conceptualised the pedagogy of workplace learning and work, the culture of project work, workplace supervision, processes through which diverse people have become employable and avoided marginalisation. The methodological choices of the research team were influenced by approaches to the problems involved in workplace learning from the learners' perspective on the one hand and from the

systems-level perspective of investment on the other. The research programme has analysed (1) what enterprises were like as learning environments as assessed by students, teachers, workplace trainers and employers; (2) what factors in workplace learning have fostered employability and promote employment prospects; (3) how workplace trainers supervised students; (4) how far the different parties involved saw workplace learning as an investment; and (5) how student perceived diversity and the culture of schools and workplaces. The research team consisted of eight persons of whom some were funded as follows:

• Funding (EUR 17.000) from the Finnish National Board of Education. Managing, co-ordinating and researching Leonardo-projektin kansallinen levitys [National dissemination of the results of the European Leonardo da Vinci project] 1999.

• Funding (EUR 84.750). from the Finnish Ministry of Education. Managing, co-ordinating and researching Silta ammatillisesta koulutuksesta työelämään. Työssäoppimisen seurantatutkimus vuonna 1999 [Follow-up research on on-the-job learning pilot]. Rahoitus: ESR, OPM ja OPH

4. Leader, coordinator and principal investigator of European projects titled Parity of esteem in post-16 education (1995-1999). First, I led and coordinated large-scale European projects focusing on educational strategies in upper secondary education (e.g. Strategies for Promoting Parity of Esteem Between Academic and Vocational Education in Eight European Countries). Second, I established two large, national and European dissemination projects. The team of the projects comprised some 30 members from different countries. The funding mainly came from the European Commission:

• Grant (EUR 15.000) from the European Commission, CEDEFOP. Managing, co-ordinating and researching The attractiveness of vocational education and training and its parity of esteem with general education. 2nd Report on Vocational Training Research in Europe.) in 1999.

• Funding (EUR 161.000) from the Commission of the European Communities, Managing and researching the multiplier-effect project titled Sharpening Post-16 Education Strategies by Horizontal and Vertical Networking, 1998-1999.

• Funding (EUR 135.500) from the Ministry of Education, Finland, for Managing, co-ordinating and researching the Leonardo da Vinci Project, Surveys and Analyses, titled Finding new Strategies for Post-16 Education by Networking Vocational and Academic / General

5. Vice Head of Research Department (1990-1998). I designed and launched many research projects funded by the National Board of Education and the Ministry of Education (e.g. Flexible Training in Social Welfare, From Colleges to Polytechnics, Upper-Secondary-Level Mathematics Instruction, and European and national Leonardo projects). The research projects looked at to what extent educational policy was being implemented in the vocational teacher’s work and in vocational learning, and compared different upper secondary education strategies, especially concerning VET and working life, in Europe. 6. Principal investigator (1987-1990) as a research fellow at the Virginia Polytechnic and

State University (VPI&SU). The theme of my research project was about the segregated division of labour investigated through vocational teachers’ gender role attitudes. Funding was received from:

• Grant (EUR 55.9000) from Academy of Finland to work as a research fellow and leading the research project on teachers’ gender-role attitudes at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1988 - 1990.
