7. Research Efforts I was elected to the CSBE/SCGAB grade of Fellow in 2007 in recognition of my significant contributions to the field of soil and water resource engineering, teaching and service to the Canadian Society for Bioengineering (CSBE/SCGAB) and the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineering (ASABE). In May 2004, Dalhousie University awarded me an honorary doctorate degree to recognize my contributions to soil and water quality research in Canada. McGill University rewarded these achievements by granting me the James McGill Chair (McGill’s equivalent of CRC Tier I) in January 2003 for the next seven years. One of our recent papers was featured on the cover page of the November-December 1999 issue of Soil Science Society of America Journal, the most renowned journal in the world in soil hydrology. In addition, one of our projects was featured in the December 2000 issue of the Resource magazine of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers. These are very rare honors for Canadian researchers, and it also signifies the importance of our research efforts in the eyes of our peers in North America and in the world. Previously, I was also awarded the prestigious Jim Beamish Award by the Canadian Society of Agricultural Engineering for making outstanding contributions in teaching, research, extension, or industry in soil and water engineering. My research program has been addressing the crucial challenge of sustaining agricultural production while protecting the environment from agricultural sources of contamination. The main innovative features of my research program are the incorporation of novel, conceptual, and innovative data analysis and processing techniques into problems of water resources management and water pollution. These skills will be needed in global systems of the future and my research program permits not only their exploration and development but also effective graduate training in these areas. The focus of my research program has been on the development of farm pollution control practices, bio-remediation and bio-augmentation systems, pesticide transport in soils, use of artificial intelligence in soil hydrology, and design and operation of drainage/subirrigation design, as detailed in my CV. My future research will build on the momentum of my earlier research, expanding on promising research findings and adding new research questions to include classes of contaminants that have risen in profile recently. (i) Environmental Pollution from Veterinary Pharmaceuticals: My future research efforts will respond to a new environmental concern arising from the increasing use of veterinary pharmaceuticals (VPs) on North American farms. While very little is known about their actual presence in the North American environment and the risks they pose to human health and the environment, VPs are present in significant and growing quantities in manure in the United States and parts of Europe. In Canada, manure production rates have increased by 75% between 1986 and 1996; most of this manure is applied directly to agricultural land as fertilizer. This, coupled with a trend of increased VP use similar to that of the United States, where VP use increased by over 30% between 1985 and 2000, points to a new risk to soil and water quality related to agricultural practices. Although there is presently little Canadian data pertaining to the presence of VPs in the environment, it is reasonable to postulate that – as is the case for biological pollutants - the risks of soil and water pollution from this source may be more serious in Canada than in the United States. Indeed, the limiting factor of lower temperatures may well

contribute to higher VP loads in Canadian soil, water, and aquatic systems, yet very limited research is currently being done on this important topic. Manure from VP-treated animals can have a pronounced effect on the microbial composition of soil and can also alter the ecologies of both soil and aquatic environments. Low levels of VPs in the environment may contribute to the development of VP-resistant bacteria, a potentially serious risk to both livestock and public health. In addition, long-term low dosage exposures of aquatic species and a wide range of plants to VPs place them at risk for VP poisoning. There is a pressing need to carry out research on the fate and transport of these micropollutants in conditions specific to our environment and its soils. Of equal concern is that surface water and groundwater in rural agricultural areas is the source of drinking water in rural communities. Therefore, bacteria and VPs in these water sources could seriously impair human health in rural areas. This innovative research will tackle heretofore unanswered questions about the effects of environmental conditions on VP mobility and persistence. Not only do different VPs possess different sorption and persistence characteristics; VP metabolites may also behave completely differently from their parent compounds. Research indicates that the metabolites of some VPs are more persistent in the environment than the parent compounds, while others are significantly more mobile. The highly mobile compounds will leach into groundwater faster and will also be easily transported to surface waters with runoff, while the less mobile compounds will sorb tightly onto soil particles. Extensive measurements are required to determine the fate and transport of these micropollutants in our environment and its soils. In addition, research will be conducted into the development of efficient, low-cost, and efficient management practices that are environmentally sustainable, economically feasible, and socially acceptable. This research will include investigation into such in situ methods as composting, anaerobic digestion, constructed wetlands and soil/vegetated filter strips to improve water quality. This research will be integrated with Theme 3, using mathematical modeling to develop BMPs. (ii) Pesticide Contamination of Soil and Water through Preferential Flow: Pesticide fate and transport studies have reached a crossroad. Many studies have looked into the sorption/desorption behavior of pesticides in soil and others have concentrated on their microbial and chemical degradation pathways. The studies have brought into clear focus the importance of understanding the role of preferential flow in soils. Currently, researchers do not fully understand how contaminants are transported through soil cracks and macropores that, for the most part, cause preferential flow. Complicating the issue is the fact that preferential flow of water and chemicals may occur differently under unsaturated and saturated flow conditions. Likewise, very little is known about the fate and transport of metabolites; the Canadian Water Quality Guidelines and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Limits lack maximum permissible standards for these metabolites. In addition to these innovative research areas, we will investigate the impact of the use of poor quality river water containing low concentrations of surfactants on the mobility of pesticides. To achieve these objectives, we plan to undertake innovative field, lysimeter and laboratory studies that will make real and substantial improvements in our understanding of the processes governing groundwater and surface water pollution from pesticides, inorganic fertilizers, and manure. We propose to investigate pesticide movement under field conditions by studying the

fate and transport of commonly used herbicides in both the unsaturated and saturated zones of soils. Building on the existing unique research capacity, new infrastructure will allow researchers to characterize, visualize, and quantify 3-D breakthroughs of water, nonreactive and reactive pollutants through soil under saturated/unsaturated flow conditions using CT scanning equipment. In addition, new methods will be developed to incorporate macropore and matrix flow domains into state-of-the-art conceptual models of simultaneous water and pollutant transport. The data will be used to gain new knowledge about the physico-chemical properties of the soil and their role in chemical transport under variably saturated conditions. This methodology will provide an “eye” to look into the soil in a non-destructive way, leading to an unprecedented understanding of in situ soil hydrologic processes in both saturated and unsaturated conditions. Compared to our previous work on preferential flow under saturated conditions, the novel features of this expanded study are the focus on preferential flow under unsaturated conditions, and the inclusion of pesticide metabolites. (iii) Mathematical Modeling of Contaminant Transport Processes: Computer simulation models are powerful analytical tools that permit rapid evaluation of a range of climatic, soils, and environmental conditions on soil and water quality. They allow assessment of various best management scenarios and provide for a mathematical integration of complex systems, which cannot be described by simple linear or nonlinear models. We will first refine existing contaminant transport models, integrating new findings on preferential pathways, subsurface drainage, and conditions such as unsaturated flow and flow in frozen soil. We will use these results for the development, testing, and validation of our computer simulation models, which are necessary to improve our understanding of the processes under study. New and more efficient models thus developed will allow further advances in our descriptive and/or predictive capacities. To achieve this, we propose to integrate mathematical modeling with GISs, artificial intelligence, fuzzy logic and expert systems. We will incorporate new sorption/desorption mechanisms into our computer simulation models. Modern data mining techniques, such as multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS), support vector machines (SVMs), and GAs (genetic algorithms), will be applied to include preferential flow in the modeling of contaminant transport. Most modeling efforts thus far have concentrated on soil column or field scale studies. With recent advances in geographical information systems (GISs) and computing hardware and software, watershed modeling can now be undertaken in a more comprehensive way. Non-point source pollution problems must be studied at a watershed scale by taking into account land elevation, soil type, land use and farm management practices. We propose to develop knowledge-based rainfall-runoff and contaminant transport models for agricultural watersheds. The very large data sets related to climate, soils, land use, and other watershed features will be used to run and visualize real-time simulations of runoff and pollutant movement in watersheds. Watershed modeling, using the latest mathematical descriptors of spatially variable areas, will allow us to not only locate critical areas in the watershed causing significant environmental degradation, but also to make estimates of the total maximum daily loads (TMDLs) of contaminants in water bodies that are environmentally sustainable. We plan to work on several state-of-the-art process-based watershed models, such as MIKE-SHE, MIKE-11, SWAT, and

AnnAGNPS, and use these results to develop the concept of TMDLs for the protection of water quality in lakes and rivers. These new modeling tools will allow simulation of various management practices, with the goal of defining BMPs to ensure source water protection. All these advances will lead to more informed management practices and legislative action in response to potential and actual threats to source water quality. (iv) Machine Vision and Image Analysis in Precision Farming: A number of studies have been undertaken to determine cropping conditions and identify weed, nitrogen, and water stresses in real-time on a field scale, i.e. a) Use of airborne and handheld hyper-spectral imaging sensors to identify different types of weeds, nitrogen, and water stresses in cornfields - various statistical and data mining methods have been used to identify cropping parameters and conditions in the field; b) Development of in-season yield forecasting models for cornfields based on mathematical modeling and spectral data; c) Development of weed maps with image processing and fuzzy logic - a low-cost image capture/processing system and fuzzy logic controller to automate the decision-making regarding where and how much herbicide to apply; d) Artificial neural networks for image recognition and classification - back-propagation artificial neural networks to distinguish young corn plants from weeds; e) Herbicide application maps using ANNs and fuzzy logic with a precision herbicide-spraying system; f) A vegetation localization algorithm for precision farming by isolating green objects in a digital image and then calculating weed density based on greenness ratio; g) An image processing system for site-specific herbicide applications by determining weed coverage and weed patchiness using the greenness method. (v) Development of Bio-Remediation and Bio-Augmentation Systems: I have been actively working on the development of simple, easy-to-use bio-remediation and bio-augmentation systems for Canadian farms and industrial pollution sites. Some of my contributions in this area are as follows: a) Use of water table management systems for biological pollution control in agricultural farms by adding nutrients in subirrigation water to cause accelerated biodegradation of farm pollutants; b) In-situ bio-remediation systems for hydrocarbon-contaminated soils by delivering nutrients and oxygen at the zone of contamination with the help of a subirrigation system; c) In-situ bio-augmentation systems for industrial sites by supplying PCB degrading bacteria to the contamination zone, and then creating the proper environmental conditions for their survival and enhanced activity. A US patent, # 6027284, dated February 22, 2000, was awarded to us on bio-remediation and bio-augmentation systems. 8. Development of Research Facilities A state-of-the art pesticide residue analysis laboratory has been established in the department with my efforts. It has a fully equipped GC/MS/MS, an HPLC with conductivity and photo-diode array detectors, and a GC with NPD and FID detectors. All three systems are controlled by the microcomputers. In addition, the laboratory has a microwave digestion/extraction system, a centrifuge, an oven, shakers, rotary evaporators, freezers, refrigerators, and a fume hood. With the help of a CFI infrastructure grant, we have acquired an ICP/OES and a LC/MS. With these facilities, we are equipped with state-of-the art analytical instruments to analyse just about any organic or inorganic contaminant in soil, water or plant samples.

In addition, we have developed an outdoor lysimeter research facility. Over 120 PVC lysimeters, 1 m long x 0.5 m diameter, have been constructed. They have allowed us to conduct field-size experiments under controlled environmental conditions. A number of my doctoral students have carried out their research projects on this site. In addition, a new laboratory, 13 m long x 3 m wide, has been constructed at this site. The new laboratory is being used for bio-remediation, bio-augmentation, and metal removal studies from contaminated soils. In addition, we have received funds from a CFI infrastructure grant to purchase a high-powered server-client Unix workstation to facilitate our research efforts in precision agriculture. The computing capabilities will be helped by two high-powered Intel workstations (dual 1-GHz microprocessors with 1 Gigabytes of memory), also funded by the CFI grant. These facilities are going to play a major role in my current and future research activities. 9. Publications My graduate students and post-doctoral fellows are always encouraged to write the first draft of a manuscript. This helps them to take responsibility for their work and become more responsible and independent researchers. In addition, it teaches them how to write manuscripts according to the norms established by a journal. In the process, they also become the first author of the manuscript. In cases where multiple authors are involved in the publications, it implies a multidisciplinary project where a contributing author has made contributions in his or her area of expertise. I have always tried to publish in a wide variety of journals. They include Canadian, American and European journals. Some journals were selected so that our research findings could be shared with many other researchers working in the same area. The majority of our papers are in the Transactions of the ASAE journal. This is among the top journals in the Agricultural Engineering field. To date, I have 210 publications in the refereed journals. There are four papers in the review process. In addition, I have 60 papers in refereed conference proceedings that were subjected to the anonymous peer-review process and were accepted for publication only after the suggested modifications were made. Some of these papers were published in the speciality conferences while the others were published as proceedings of joint national and international conferences/symposia. Sometimes, it has been more difficult to get your paper published in a speciality conference than in a journal. Also, we have 147 papers/presentations at many technical and scientific conferences, mainly sponsored by the American and Canadian Societies of Agricultural Engineering. Most of these papers are non-refereed, although they are full-length papers with paper numbers, and may be purchased from the engineering societies at a small cost. There are five extension papers and one popular article. a) Refereed Journal Publications 1. Adamowski, J., H.F. Chan, S.O. Prasher, B. Ozga-Zielinski, and A. Sliusarieva. 2012.

10. Teaching Activities Teaching has been a major part of my academic duties in the last twenty-eight years. One of my primary goals has been the teaching and training of highly qualified individuals at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Below, I have listed some of my teaching related activities in the last ten years. a) Teaching Responsibilities I have taught several undergraduate and graduate courses during this period. On average, I have been teaching two undergraduate and two graduate courses per year. I like to give one assignment every week. In both undergraduate and graduate courses, wherever possible, I encourage my students to work as a team of two to three students on projects. This allows them to learn about team work, punctuality, and share responsibilities. They also present their projects in front of the class and thus learn about making presentations and public speaking. In most

39

courses, I also encourage them to form teams in such a way that all team members are not from the same discipline, thus introducing them to interdisciplinary approach to problem solving. i) Undergraduate teaching: I have taught many undergraduate courses. They include Soil and Water Quality Management (AGRI 435), Hydrology and Water Resources (BREE 217), Computing for Engineers (BREE 252), GIS for Biosystems Management (BREE 330), Engineering Mathematics (BREE 319), Mechanics of Materials (BREE 341), Bioresource Engineering Materials (BREE 216), Geomatics (BREE 214), and Linear Algebra (BREE 103). Presently, I teach Hydrology and Water Resources (BREE 217). In addition, I have administrative responsibilities for several departmental courses. ii) Graduate teaching: I have had the responsibility of teaching several graduate courses, including Water Quality Management (BREE 533), Soil Hydrologic Modelling (BREE 515), Advanced Soil and Water Engineering (BREE 616), and Graduate Seminar (BREE 651, 652, 751, 752, 753, and 754). At present, I teach Soil BREE 515 every year. Training of highly qualified professionals: The training of highly qualified personnel in Bioreosource Engineering has been a major priority of my program. Over 18 researchers have worked with me as post-doctoral fellows or research associates. Fifty graduate students have completed their post-graduate degrees under my supervision, 31 at the Master’s level and 19 at the doctoral level. They are all gainfully employed working as consultants, lecturers, research associates, post-doctoral fellows, and professors. I am presently supervising/co-supervising 7 Ph.D and 7 M.Sc (thesis) students. iii) Other teaching involvement: I am also actively involved in the supervisory and examining committees of the Department of Civil Engineering at McGill. I have been a Pro-Dean and examiner for many other departments in the university. In addition, I have supervised several undergraduate projects in Bioresource Engineering over the last twenty-eight years. Many of these students have done excellent work and have gone on to do Master's and PhD's. Some of the work was of such high quality that it has been published in Transactions of the ASABE journal and in the Proceedings of the National Drainage Symposia sponsored by ASABE. 11. International Stature, Professional and Academic Contributions I have been invited to chair numerous technical sessions at various Annual Meetings, sponsored by ASABE, CSBE, the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE), and the Northeast Agricultural/Biological Engineering Conference (NABEC). These invitations are reserved for internationally well-known professionals who are considered to be an authority in their respective fields. I was the President of CSBE for 2010-2011. I am actively serving the professional society as its Past-President. In the past, I have also served as Chair of Intl-601, the International Executive Committee of the ASABE. I have also served as Chair and Vice-Chair of Intl-611, the International Affairs Committee of the ASABE. In addition, I have been the Chair of SW-236, the Benefits of Drainage and Subirrigation Committee of ASABE.
