Usha Rani, Professor, Department of Studies in Communication and Journalism, University of Mysore, Mysore, India Dr. N.Usha Rani is a Professor in the Department of Communication and Journalism in the University of Mysore, Mysore. She has two masters' degrees, one in Education and the other in Journalism. She has a Ph.D in Journalism. She is the former Director of EMMRC-Educational Multi Media Research Centre, established by the University Grants Commission, in the State of Karnataka. She was instrumental in the establishment of EMMRC in the University of Mysore in 1995, with a mandate to produce educational media products for the students of higher education. She established Professional TV Studio in the University of Mysore on April 20, 1999. She recently established Prof.Nadig Krishnamurthy Audio Visual Studio in the Department of Studies in Communication & Journalism, University of Mysore, Manasagangotri, Mysore on June 3, 2012. Dr. N. Usha Rani, Professor, Department of Studies in Communication and Journalism,

University of Mysore, Mysore, India

Dr. N.Usha Rani is a Professor in the Department of

Communication and Journalism in the University of Mysore, Mysore.

She has two masters' degrees, one in Education and the other in

Journalism. She has a Ph.D in Journalism. She is the former Director of

EMMRC-Educational Multi Media Research Centre, established by the

University Grants Commission, in the State of Karnataka. She was

instrumental in the establishment of EMMRC in the University of

Mysore in 1995, with a mandate to produce educational media products

for the students of higher education. She established Professional TV

Studio in the University of Mysore on April 20, 1999. She recently

A media educationist, she has won the prestigious American

Fulbright Fellowship twice (1990-91 & 2006-07), which is a rare

distinction in India. She has also been awarded with the Canadian

Advance Faculty Research Fellowship (2002) and conducted research at

McGill University, Montreal, Canada. She studied television production

and international broadcasting at Newhouse School of Public

Communication, Syracuse University, Syracuse, USA. She has also done

internship at WXYT Fox TV Station, USA. She was a senior research

fellow at the Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL, USA.

She has won two National Awards for producing best educational

TV documentaries. During her tenure, EMMRC won nine national

awards for producing distinctive educational TV programmes. She has

few books and many research publications to her credit. The book, Folk

Media for Development and the other, Educational Television in India-

Challenges and Issues are some of her rare and major works. She teaches

Writing for Media, Theories of Communication and Communication

Research Methods to the Master’s students and Ph.D scholars in the

University of Mysore.

She has contributed immensely to the development of CBCS -

Choice Based Credit System in the University of Mysore as a core

member of the Expert Committee and has oriented teachers and

students in the CBCS mode of education. She was instrumental in the

starting of MPhil. in Area Studies - Karnataka Studies in the University

of Mysore for the first time in the country. She has founder - editor of a

international social science research journal- Journal of Media and Social

Development in the University of Mysore. She has contributed to the

creation of knowledge and scholarship in the area of media studies,

journalism and social development.

She is currently serving as the Professor and Coordinator of

University Grants Commission’s University with Potential for

Excellence (UPE) Project in the University of Mysore. She is working on

following projects: i) Coordinator/Principal Investigator- UGC-UPE-

University with Potential for Excellence Project- Role of Media in Social

Development: A Case Study of Karnataka. Grant -Rs.5 crore Grant (2011-

16).

ii) Coordinator/Principal Investigator -UGC-UPE Project- Centre

for Education of Visually Challenged- Drushtee- Grant -Rs.1 Crore (2011-

2016).

Iii) Principal Investigator – UGC Major Research Project- ‘Growth

of Kannada Journalism in the pre and post independent India’. Grant-

Rs.8, 22,100 (2012-15).
