EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Dr. Lawrence D. Goodridge, Associate Professor Ian and Jayne Munro Chair in Food Safety RESEARCH SUMMARY A successful, extramurally funded research program has been developed within the Department of Food Science and Agricultural Chemistry, with the primary research focus of understanding the role that bacteriophages play in the fitness of foodborne pathogens, as well as exploiting the use of bacteriophages to solve food safety related problems. Specific research thrusts within this broad them includes the development of bacteriophage based approaches for rapid detection of foodborne and waterborne bacterial and viral pathogens; characterization of the role that bacteriophages play in the spread of genetic determinants of antibiotic resistance amongst bacteria isolated from food production animals; and the development of novel bacteriophage based biocontrol methods to reduce the foodborne pathogen load in food producing animals and minimally processed foods. Forty Five refereed publications (3 submitted). Thirteen book chapters (1 submitted). One hundred and one abstracts and presentations at scientific meetings. One hundred and thirteen invited presentations. Two patents. Thirty six funded projects as PI and 31 funded projects as Co-PI. Total research funding since 2003 from Canadian and US sources is $19,128,503. Previous Research Experience Postdoctoral/Research Associate Research: University of Georgia, Center for Food Safety, University of Guelph, Canadian Research Institute for Food Safety.
