COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT AND LEADERSHIP ROLES I was active in student, community campaigns and movements during the 1970’s and 1980’s. I assisted in the formation of the United Democratic Front through national networking and facilitation of the process. During this period, I was also a founder and executive member of the Federation of Transvaal Women and a founder and active member of Concerned Social Workers. Other involvements during the 1980’s included support services to individuals and communities affected by violence and repression. In the 1990’s I was a member of the Board of Trustees of People Opposing Women Abuse; a Board member of the Family Life Association of South Africa; a founder member and Trustee the Independent Media Diversity Trust; a Board member and Trustees of the Social Change Assistance Trust. I also participated in the initiation of the Mpumulelo Award recognizing innovation in the development sector. Over the past decade, I held various positions that include the following. Former Chairperson of the Gauteng Selection Committee of the Rhodes Scholarships in Southern Africa (2000-2001); former Chairperson of the SA National Commission for UNESCO (2002-2005); former Trustee of the Link-SA Fund for Tertiary Education; Member and Chair of Common Purpose Advisory Group, Board of Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation and Volunteer and Service Enquiry Southern Africa (VOSESA). Served as a board member of the Human Sciences Research Council Press. Currently, I am a member of the Standing Committee of Science for the Reduction of Poverty and Inequality, Academy of Science of South Africa; and the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence in Human Development, Department of Science and Technology, NRF and Wits University.
