Dear Brothers and Sisters In Christ, t is a privilege and honor to be selected as Lay
Director of the Youngstown Cursillo Movement. Together we can do all things with Christ as
our center and the Holy Spirit to take hold of us and guide us.
“Send forth your Spirit and you shall renew the face of the earth.”
Men’s Team #62 is in formation and is meeting every
Monday at St. Luke School in Boardman at 7PM. Jim Kramer is the
Rector and Don Shilling is the Assistant Rector. The men would
LOVE to see as many of our Community as possible each week to
give them support. See page 2 for the Formation schedule. The
Weekend is set for July 21-24 at St. Joseph Parish School Building in
Austintown. We are still accepting applications for new friends to
live Men’s Weekend #62. Talk to God about your friend and talk to
your friend about God. Now may be the time to bring your friend
to the Cursillo. Please submit the application to Pat Costello. Her phone number is 330-757-
9447. We would love to have as many new friends as God sends us for Men’s Weekend #62.
Truly living our Weekend in our 4th Day is to strive to live what is fundamental to
being a Christian, to live a life of Piety (Holiness), Study (Formation), and Action
(Evangelization). An excellent tool that we have is the School of Leaders that meets every 3rd
Wednesday at 7PM at St. Brendan Parish in Youngstown. We learn at the School how to be
better Christian Leaders. All Cursillistas are welcome and attending will definitely enhance your
4th Day walk with Christ.
On June 16th, the Secretariat will be selecting new chairpersons for the Cursillo, Post
Cursillo and School of Leaders positions that begin on July 1st. These are one year commitments
with an option for a second year. Please call Mike Hripko, 330-502-7239 if you would like to be
nominated or you know of someone that you would like to nominate (with their permission).
We would like many names to select from!!
One of my primary goals is to involve as many Cursillistas as possible in the many
facets of our Movement. EVERYONE IS WELCOME!! We are all Leaders and our leadership skills
are greatly needed in order to make our Movement even better!! I’ll always remember the
Rector’s statement from the Weekend: “Everyone has something to offer.”
My daily prayers are that God will bless all of you and that He be glorified in everything we do!!

under the Pre-Cursillo position:
Newsletter: Bill Joyce
Media: Gina Fire
Applications: Amy Shilling
Parish Rep: to be confirmed
Web Site: Gary Deckant in conjunction with
Gina Fire.
Our Parish Representatives' list will be
undergoing some confirmations and changes
due to the merging of parishes. Reps are very
important because not everyone has a
computer AND in the case of a computer
BREAKDOWN, necessary information must
still be passed on. If there is an opening at
your church, consider volunteering to be the
Cursillo Parish Representative there.
In all the literature and general meetings lately the focus has been on "make a friend, be
a friend, then bring your friend to Christ." If
we were to ask ourselves and truthfully
answer, "How am I doing in this area?" Would
Jesus be proud of us? I know I must do better!
How about you?
Cursillo needs all of us to continue its work
of bringing Jesus to our environments. Our
dedication will keep Cursillo viable.
Another area of concern that has been
Discussed is sponsorship. Sponsors, you are
invaluable to your babe chicks. They will learn
to love Ultreya and fit it into their schedule on a
regular basis... If... you give them the
example. It has been suggested that you keep
in touch with your babe chick for a year.

As I soon end my term as School of Leaders Chair, I would like to thank two groups of people. First of all, I have been blessed with the strong support of dedicated and talented Secretariat members, who have brought their creativ-ity, leadership, and dedication to the Youngstown Cursillo Movement over the past two years. Secondly, there are a number of pas-sionate, committed, and caring people who regularly attend the School of Leaders monthly meetings. Without the prayers and support of both groups, we would not be successful.
Our Movement has been blessed with outstanding leadership over the past two years from Lay Directors Bill Joyce and Ron Piersante. In a Diocese whose population is declining, and whose Catholic churches are consolidating, Youngstown Cursillo remains vibrant and relevant part of our Diocese. This is a success in and of itself.
I attended the 4/15/11 meeting with Cef Aguillon, National Cursillo Director and came away with new appreciation for the Move-ment and the School of Leaders. In particular, Cef explained the clear inter-connectedness between School, Three Day Weekend and Team Formation, and the good work of the other Secretariat members. In my remaining time in the position, I will be trying to take his ideas forward, both in terms of SOL meeting structure and format, but particularly in terms of meeting content, hopefully leaving my successor with some good ideas for the future.
A key theme expressed early on and frequently in the first months of Ron Piersante's tenure is CURSILLISTA INVOLVEMENT. Ron is asking the Secretariat to help enlist committed Cursillistas to step forward and participate in the Movement as Committee Chairs, event participants, and as true leaders of the Movement. This direction is vital to the future of our Movement. Our Movement needs broad based participation and support from many Cursillistas so that we can lessen the workload on any one individual and get better input and ideas. Please prayerfully consider supporting Cursillo with your time and talent in a role as an active Committee Chairper-son, or an active participant in the School of Leaders.
I recently read a book called "Outliers" that suggested that SUCCESS was closely correlated with TIME COMMITMENT. Whether it were Michael Jordan in basketball or Bill Gates in business or the Beatles in music, the author was able to draw a direct correlation between TIME COMMITMENT and SUCCESS, concluding that it generally takes 10,000 hours of TIME COMMITMENT - study, practice, discipline, commitment, focus, WORK - in order to be a SUCCESS. This correlation is reliable and repeated in sports, poli-tics, music, business, hobbies, and education.
The public ministry of Jesus lasted three years or a little over 1,000 days. If we were to assume that Jesus worked 10 hour days, I know we would agree that his 10,000 hours of TIME COMMITMENT resulted in the Ultimate SUCCESS - the Salvation of the entire world.
This "10,000 hour" concept is also appropriate for our Movement. A thriving and SUCCESSFUL Cursillo Movement will take TIME COMMITMENT not only from Secretariat members, but from the whole Cursillo community. Secretariat alone cannot provide all 10,000 hours of leadership and work- that would require full time eight hour a day commitment from all Secretariat Members, and of course that is not possible.
A thriving Youngstown Cursillo needs your involvement. Our Movement needs you at Ultreya, at Regional Workshops, as Secretariat Members, at School of Leaders, as Sub-committee Chairs, as Parish Leaders, as Active Sponsors, as Weekend Team Members, as Small Group participants, as weekend clean-up crew, as website developers, as writers, as newsletter folders/labelers, as artists, as account-ants, as evangelists, and most especially as people of prayer.
The great thing about Youngstown Cursillo is that we have so many Cursillistas, that when we divide the "10,000 hours" amongst all of us, the yoke is easy, the burden is light. And because we are often working alongside our Christian friends, the work is always fun, joyful, and enriching. (Think about the feeling you have in the kitchen during the three day weekend!)
Please prayerfully consider how many of the "10,000 hours" you are willing to share in order to keep Youngstown Cursillo a successful and thriving community. Secretariat Members are always available by phone or email if you would like to discuss where you might best fit. Is 30 or 40 hours a year a lot to ask to help our Movement thrive? That is all it takes for you to attend just one monthly meeting - School, Ultreya, or Workshop.
Now is the time to renew your commitment to be actively involved in Cursillo!
DeColores,
MikeMikeMikeMike

FROM PEG ELSTON—POST CURSILLO CHAIR
Yippee! The sun is out-even briefly it’s such a wonderful sight. I think I have moss growing on my north side!
I would like to take this time-as my term of Post Cursillo Chair is rapidly coming to the end, to thank the Cursillo community for all the help with the events that have come under Post Cursillo. The picnics, Christmas parties, Ultreyas and seminars, without your co-operation and positive support, I’m sure I would not have enjoyed my time serving on the Secretariat as much. I look forward to my continuing service and support to the Cursillo Movement.

A Cursillo Region 3 Meeting was held March 19th at St. Bren-dan Church on Youngstown’s west side. Father Bill Loveless, Pastor of St. Brendan’s graciously provided the facilities for the entire day. Mary Fleckenstein, Region 3 Coordinator, presided over the
meeting. The theme was “The Purpose of Cursillo.” Talks were presented by Mary Fleckenstein, Father Tom Galvin (who is the Region 3 Spiritual Director), Pat Tow-er and Margi Lash.
The kitchen was co-chaired by Laurie Kra-mer and Peg Elston. A continental break-
fast and a light lunch were served. At the end of the day, the Cursillistas joined the St. Brendan parishioners for 4 pm mass. The next Region 3 meeting is scheduled for October 14-16 in Derby, New York. Contact Ron Piersante for details.

THE WORD GREW
But the word of God continued to spread and grow. After Barnabas and Saul completed their relief mission, they returned to Jerusalem, taking with them John, who is called Mark.
Now, there were in the church at Antioch prophets and teachers; Barnabas, Symeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen who was a close friend of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Then, completing their fasting and prayer, they laid hands on them and sent them off.
So they, sent forth by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and from there sailed to Cyprus. When they arrived in Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the Jewish synagogues.
Acts 12:24–13:5a
Points to Consider
1. An amazing expression is used in the Acts of the Apostles: “the word grew.” What actually grew, of course, was the earliest church, but the church was so identified with preaching the word, that as the church grew, the word was spread through a wider radius.
2. This early community knew that they needed to pray together and fast for discernment.
3. The earliest church was keenly aware of the prompting of the Holy Spirit and spent time listening for the Spirit to direct them.
4. The first Christians understood that they needed to be missionary – not just to take up a collection, but to send members of their community elsewhere with the Good News.
Questions to Ponder
1. How clearly do you proclaim the Good News of Christ to others? How is this expressed in your words? How is this manifested in your actions? How is this clear in your attitudes of life?
2. When you need to consider various options, do you really pray to be open to what might what might require you to change?

Thank you!
To our Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ-
In our deepest sorrow, you were there. On a cold and snowy even-ing, many of you braved the roads to sing “Lord, send me where you would have me…”
There are not enough words to express our thanks to the community who braved every element to say “good bye” one last time to Frank.
Thank you for your condolences, for your prayers and your love.
