Fire bans still on inKamloops Fire Ctre
Despite recent rainfall in the Kam-loops Fire Centre, Category 2 & Category3 prohibitions are still in effect. Weatherforecasts call for hot temperatures &thundershowers with the possibility oflightning. During this period, it is vitalthat BC Wildfire Service resources beready to deal with any wildfires sparkedby lightning and not tied up respondingto preventable, human-caused fires.
Since April 1, BC Wildfire Servicecrews have responded to 67 wildfires inthe Kamloops Fire Centre that have cov-ered 213 hectares. Many of these were theresult of poorly planned open burning.So far this month, there have been over20 instances of non-compliant fire usethroughout the fire centre.
The current Category 2 and Category3 prohibitions will remain in effect untilOct. 15, or until further notice.
To report a wildfire, unattendedcampfire or open burning violation, call1-800-663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cellphone.
City’s ‘Trap NeuterReturn’ project
The City has begun a “Trap NeuterReturn” project, and will be trapping catsMonday and Tuesday evenings. The pro-gram is designed to help control thenumber of feral and unwanted cats liv-ing in the city. Cat populations in certain areas of the City have become increasinglyhigh, and the project (made possible in part through grant funding from the BCSPCA) is designed to help control cat populations humanely.
Cats will be taken to the Nicola Valley Vet Clinic and the Merritt Veterinary Hos-pital and will stay in the care of the veterinary professionals until they are ready tobe returned to the location they were trapped in.
Did you know? 1 female and 1 male cat (intact) can produce 781,250 kittens, fe-males can go into heat every 14 to 21 days, and can have up to 3 litters per year with4-6 kittens per litter. Some female cats will go into heat at 4 months old but the averageage is 6-9 months. They are usually driven into heat by seasonal changes, with themost active heats from January through September.
