Customer Spotlight: Model Remodel

Model Remodel (MRM) has been serving the Seattle area for over 15 years. MRM is a design-build contractor providing custom remodeling, new construction and eco-renovation services. Their projects have been recognized locally and nationally for green building, historical preservation and thoughtful design.

Founded in 2002, it is the skills, expertise and camaraderie of the MRM crew that makes this company the exceptional team that it is today. Their job is to help customers visualize their space and choose the layout, tile, countertops, cabinets and more, before moving on to construction. They bring beautiful designs to life, while using as many local and eco-friendly products as possible.

Partnering with architects and skilled subcontractors, MRM provides services from conceptual sketching all the way through to the finished project. Their crew of experienced craftsmen and women are specialized in estimating, design, project management, and carpentry. Their in-house design team works alongside their building crew to lead customers through projects seamlessly, from start to finish.

They have developed a systematic process—”The MRM Way”—which they’ve refined over the years to keep their customers involved in critical steps during their remodel or build. This makes sure that they stay true to the project design, budget and goals.

MRM has been a partner of Canyon Creek since 2004 and has collaborated on many residential home projects. They have a great team who is very professional and communicates proactively

while staying on top of challenges and changes. Canyon Creek has worked with MRM to customize everything from built-in storage benches to murphy beds, alongside their kitchen and bath cabinet orders.

The company is also committed to using green building techniques and learning new ways to minimize their impact on the environment. They work hard to educate their clients on their energy efficient building practices, sustainable techniques, and their use of recycled products and materials. This commitment extends to cabinetry.

Founder and president, Jason Legat, explains: “We’ve been very fortunate to work with such an eco-minded cabinet company. Canyon Creek’s KCMA Environmental Stewardship certificate, CARB and F4 certifications, and low-VOC finishes make them a perfect fit in our healthy homes.”

Elements Of A Transitional Kitchen

Part traditional, part modern, transitional kitchens blend classic, decorative elements with contemporary features. It’s also one of the hottest trends of 2018. For the ultimate transi-tional kitchen, focus on these design elements.

Embellish a little: Be careful with decorative ornamentation. Too many or too few embellish-ments will move you out of the transitional design zone. Corbels or millwork around windows, or barstools will help create interest and depth in the room.

Countertops: Granite, limestone and marble countertops are seen in both contemporary and tradi-tional styles making them a great fit in transitional designs. Stay away from fancy edge treatments as they can look too ornate.

Streamlined cabinets: Playing a big role in a transitional kitchen design are the cabinets. Many transitional kitchens will feature natural materials and manufac-tured ones. Examples include simple wood panel doors with modern hardware or a stainless steel range hood next to wood cabinets.

Decor: Accents should be kept at a minimum. Avoid anything too graphic or busy. Flower arrange-ments or plants will add contrast and focal points without over powering the design.

Color and texture: Stay away from too many strong colors. While pops of color here and there are OK, layering monochro-matic colors for a warmer feel will work best.

Laundry Room Organization

Take time to inventory everything in the laundry room. Empty detergent bottles and old, smelly, stained items can be discarded right away. The more you can get rid of the easier it will be to see what storage space you many need.

Don’t leave clean items in the laundry room. Bring your clothes to the closet or dresser drawers when they are done drying. Max-imize the cabinet design in the laundry room for dryer sheets, detergent and extra rags.

Allocate a spot for mismatched socks. That way when you come across a lost sock, you will be able to find its match easier. A jar for loose change will keep your change from rolling around in the washer or dryer.

Many times the laundry room doubles as storage space for other items. It’s a good idea to keep the cleaning and laundry items together, and a designated spot for other items. If you are storing pet food or grooming tools in the laundry room make sure they are away from all cleaning products.

Mismatched socks and loose change are a few items that can clutter up a laundry room. With a little organization, you can keep the laundry room clutter down.

Green Your Home For Earth DayBeing environmentally friendly doesn’t have to be time consuming or an extreme sacrifice to your lifestyle. Celebrate Earth Day on Sunday, April 22nd with these easy ways to green your home.

Save energy and money by keeping your thermostat at 68 degrees Fahrenheit during colder weather and at 78 degrees during warm weather.

Switch out your light bulbs for energy efficient ones. Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulbs can last up to 10 times longer and use 66 percent less energy than standard incandescent bulbs.

Purchase reusable shopping bags, coffee cups, and water bottles.

Plant something! Plant a tree or two in the yard or start your own fruit and veggie garden.

Create a compost pile in the backyard. When the soil is ready, it will be the perfect fertilizer for your garden.

Spring Clean The Kitchen Like A Pro

Empty out cabinets: Taking everything out of your kitchen cabinets is the best way to start organizing. You’ll be able to go through the contents discarding duplicate items and broken utensils. During this process, move items into three piles: keep, donate and toss.

Sort your keep pile: After removing the donate and toss piles out of the kitchen, sort your keep pile into like items. Storing like items in the cabinets will help you keep the kitchen nice and tidy. Seasonal items and special entertaining pieces can be safely stored outside the kitchen or in hard to reach areas. That way they won’t take up precious cabinet space.

Utilize containers, bins and drawer dividers: Keep miscellaneous items from overflowing with storage containers. This allows you to designate a spot for each item in the kitchen. Clear containers make it convenient to locate cooking utensils without having to pull the entire contents out of the drawer.

Spring cleaning is more than scrubbing floors and dusting. It’s also a great time to organize your life—starting with your kitchen!

Soap Storage IdeasEvery vanity has something in common. Soap! Grimy soap dishes aren’t always the most attractive option. Try out one of these storage options:

Soap holders that hang over the edge of your sink free up counter space and prevents the surface of your vanity from accumulating soap slime.

If you are a fan of liquid hand soap, clear glass dispensers are a nice way to decorate your bathroom. Hide extra soap in your vanity cabinets so you can easily refill the dispenser when needed.

Place soap on top of river rocks inside a small container. This will keep soap from sticking to the countertop. Make sure to rinse off the rocks and the container every once in a while.
