ABOUT CUTMCenturion University of Technology & Management (CUTM) is the first multi sector private state University in Odisha, established through an Act of State legislative assembly in 2010. The raison detre of CUTM is to shape lives and empower communities.

The University has created a Numero Uno and leadership status in the genre of modern universities though established in the rural areas, but with a global perspective. The out-of-the-box approach, i.e. the focus on experi-ence-based learning, hands-on knowledge and practice oriented pedagogy validated, designed, developed and delivered in partnership with industries has attracted the attention at national and international level because of which the University got a special mention in the report, Right to Education, which was presented to the UN General Assembly by the Secretary General on 30th October 2012 [bit.ly/1mUIwzO]. We were also cited prominently in The Econo-mist (September 2013) and recently in the KPMG report of McKinsey Global Institute (February 2014).

The uniqueness of the University is bolstered owing to its strength in establishing and managing public schools under CBSE, +2 colleges under State Council, ITIs under NCVT and University level schools for diploma, advanced diploma, degrees and PG and PhD.

In its endeavor to converge theory and practice for holistic, appropriate and relevant teaching and learning, the University has established the following social entrepreneurship outreach entities:

Gram Tarang Employability & Training Services (GTETS) is one of the first partners of NSDC. It engages in vocational education and training and skill building to provide alternate vertical and horizontal opportunities through customized, modular and sequential training programs in partnership with the participation of industries such as Ashok Leyland, Godrej, Caf Coffee Day, and various export houses.

Gram Tarang Inclusive Development Services Pvt. Ltd works in North East of India (Assam, Manipur, Tripura and Hyderabad) from October 2010 and has presence in over 500 Gram Panchayats. GTIDS opened over 2 Lakhs no-frills accounts till date and disbursing NREGS payments in the state of Tripura since Aug 2011.

Gram Tarang Foods (GTF) is a start-up company with state-of-the-art technology which uses CO2 supercritical extraction process but indigenously designed and developed plants and machinery. It focuses on strengthening the participation of local farmers in international quality organic farming, and access to international market.

Micro Business Center (MBC) - Building on nearly a decade of work in youth development and employability training, Centurion University has set up a Section 25 company (Centurion Entrepreneurship Facilitation Centre) to deliver a range of interventions focusing on the creation (and enhancement) of sustainable livelihoods and entrepre-neurship development in urban areas.

The University is committed to navigate a pathway for any individual through competency building, accreditation, validation, recognition of prior learning and experience irrespective of base level of education. Inclusive, integrated and outcome driven teaching and learning with adaptability and flexibility will remain the core strength and focus of the University.

In 2005, UNESCO participated in the World Summit on the Information Societies (WSIS), suggesting a move from the information society to knowledge societies. In its World Report, Towards Knowledge Socie-ties, these were defined as societies benefiting from their diversity and their capacities for stimulating knowl-edge sharing. These offer many new opportunities for development, supported by technological innovation and by wide scale participation in the production and consumption of information. The report especially pinpointed four key dimensions of knowledge societies: freedom of expression and freedom of information, universal access to information and knowledge, quality education for all, and respect for linguistic and cultur-al diversity.

Based on the principles outlined above, and with a view to seek the status of UNESCO category II institu-tion, Centurion University has decided to create the Institute of Knowledge Societies on its campus. Prof. Chandrabhanu Pattanayak who presently works as Director of the CCTE and the University of Hawai at Manoas India programmes, will drive the project. The Institute will strive to draw together all wings of the Centurion Institutions to create a research hub and network them with a view to give direction to the larger mandate of a sustainable society through a true acknowledgement of the diverse and simultaneous sites of knowledge production.

ALL AT C - STUDENT VISIT TO PEGASUSWhile teaching programming, it was found that classroom teaching is not enough if students have to learn to write code. Students stayed motivated or interested in the class but forgot all about it after 5pm. However, students need to discuss with peers and write code beyond the academic hours to learn programming. How to then change the culture so that

students inculcate the habit of thinking and programming in the evenings?

This led Prof. Kalyan Banerjee to plan a scenario where the teacher would

have control over the students time, beyond 5pm. The idea was to change from teaching or showing to motivating. If students are motivated, they will figure out how to learn.

This thought process led to a different plan. There was a need to take the motivated students away from it all to a different environment (with none of the usual constraints, nor the usual excuses) where the teacher and students will be together from early in the morning, till midnight. The purpose was also to make a difference to their habits, so they spend every hour (relaxation included) in a manner that is useful to their future. The objective is to get them motivated to programming and also enjoy it.

THE PROGRAMMING EXCURSIONThe programming excursion took a group of Computer Science students to Pegasus, a Learning Center by the sea, 22 km north of Pondicherry, on the Chennai ECR. A 24-day marathon effort, where students spend 7 to 12 hours on programming, every day, and rest of the time is spent on other important but secondary goals, all aimed at creating exposure and inspiration. Primary goal is to discover the joy of programming, and become so inspired that one will continue with the habit. Just being with the same faculty or just doing programming will be boring, hence variety of exposure is needed. They were exposed to 10 faculty members from different organizations.

The learning journey in fast-forward left students motivated, who worked well beyond midnight (not their usual behaviour), and showed radical improvement, writing and debugging hundreds of lines of original code. Apart from programming, they also came back inspired, with a thinking and questioning mindset, and a clearer, more optimistic view of their future.

SVISIT TO NORISHO - SUSTAINABLE ORGANIC FARMINGA group of 33 students of MBA IV semester (Jatni Campus) led by Prof. Smita Mishra Panda visited Norisho

village in Niali Cuttack as part of their Sustainable Development and Agriculture course on 11 Jan 2014. Prof. Sibakripa Bose also accompanied the group. The idea was to expose the students to organic farming being practiced by Mr. Natabar Sarangi. He is a retired school teacher 80 years old, who has take to organic agriculture after his retirement. Mr. Sarangi has so far

preserved 460 indigenous varieties of paddy seeds. His main objective is to promote poison free sustainable agriculture.

The students visited his farm where he grows a wide variety of indigenous paddy in two hectares of land. They also interacted with the farmers working in the field. According to Mr. Sarangi, the requirement of water in organic farming is 25% less compared with industrial farming. Indigenous paddy can grow in different types of lands and takes less time to mature. He explained to the students how to use organic nutrients (Panchakruta) for increasing the production of paddy, which is a mixture of cow dung, cow urine, butter milk, clarified butter (ghee), sugar cane juice, honey, jaggery, ripe banana, rotten grapes and green coconut juice in varying quantities. About 15 kgs of Panchakruta is enough to provide nutrition to paddy cultivated in 5 acres of land. The idea is to provide micro-nutrients to the crop which is

very important for its growth and productivity. He discussed in detail with the students on the advantaged of organic farming.

Although the uptake for organic farming in the village in low despite efforts by Mr. Sarangi, he continues to grow paddy year after year organically and has set an example for all to

understand and experience the benefits of conservation and organic farming.
