RESEARCH ACTIVITY 1. Research topics His current research work has two main objectives: a. Development of models to support forest ecosystems management planning and address current challenges (e.g. climate change, multiple demands, collaborative needs, participatory concerns) faced by all actors involved in forest management planning (e.g. non-industrial forest owners, the forest industry, the public administration and non-governmental organizations). b. Development of decision systems and information technologies to support forest ecosystem management planning, regional and national land-use planning and policy-making. The results of this research have been instrumental to innovate: (1) operational, tactical and strategic forest management decision analysis, (2) assessment and analysis of forestry projects, (3) economic and environmental impact assessment of forestry projects and programs, (4) decision analysis as a forest policy tool, (5) participatory forest resources decision making and collaborative planning, (6) methodologies for regional and national land use planning and (7) the development of both undergraduate and graduate level natural resources management and economics courses.

• In the past his research was conducted in the framework of 23 national projects and 11 international projects; he was principal investigator in 7 national projects and in 2 international projects, he co-coordinated 1 international project and he coordinated the research on forest resources management and economics to be developed by the School of Agriculture (ISA) in the framework of 21 projects.

• His research results are documented in 63 international publications with peer-

review and/or published by international editor of recognized merit, in 14 portuguese peer-reviewed publications and in 113 other publications. The number of citations of these publications in the Web of Knowledge is 313 (h index = 11) - http://www.researcherid.com/ (id = A-4131-2008). The number of citations of these publications in Google Scholar is 925 (h index = 17) - http://scholar.google.com/citations?user=v5ZUmqkAAAAJ

• His research results have been presented in 137 technical or scientific

meetings. He organized or participated in the scientific committee of 17 international meetings and 10 national meetings and he was invited to make presentations in 22 other international meetings and 25 other national meetings.
