Education
Ph. D. (Aerospace Engineering) Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, 2006 Thesis title: “Tabs for Controlling Sonic and Supersonic Jets” Thesis Adviser: Prof. E. Rathakrishnan Thesis Summary: Jet plays a dominant role in many disciplines of engineering. Also, the jet needs to be controlled to serve efficiently for any specific purpose for which it is employed. Thus, jet control becomes an inevitable part of jet research. However, even though a quantum of information is available in literature, accounting for core length reduction and noise attenuation with tabs, notches, grooves, and cross‐wire, the physics of the mixing enhancement caused by these passive controls are not deeply probed into, especially in the sonic and supersonic regimes. With this in mind, the thesis work aimed at evaluating
the efficacy of passive control in the form of mechanical tab, on mixing characteristics of sonic and supersonic jets and to apprehend the governing flow physics and to capture the flow structure, in the presence of different levels of expansion at the nozzle exit.
M.Tech. (Mechanical Engineering), College of Engineering Trivandrum, Kerala University, 1998 Thesis Title: “Numerical Simulation of 3‐D Turbulent Incompressible Flows Using Taylor‐Galkerin Finite Element Method and its Application to the Analysis of Coolant Channel Flow Method” Thesis Adviser: Prof. S. Anil Lal and Dr. Jayachandran (Scientist, VSSC, Thiruvanathapuram) Thesis Summary: Numerical solutions of the steady and unsteady 3‐D incompressible Navier‐Stokes equations and energy equation are obtained using Taylor‐Galerkin finite element method. In this algorithm, the solution is achieved by first approximating the time derivative by means of a forward time Taylor series expansion and afterwards discretizing the space derivatives by means of a Galerkin procedure. Linear tetrahedral elements are used for space discretization. Velocity‐correction method is used to achieve the mass conservation. The buoyancy term in the vertical momentum equation is obtained using Boussinesq approximation. The computer code is further extended to the analysis of turbulent incompressible flows by incorporating the Spalart‐Allmaras one equation turbulence model. The code is validated against available bench mark problems such as lid driven cubic cavity and buoyancy driven cubic cavity for different Reynolds numbers and Rayleigh numbers. Finally code is used for the analysis of regenerative coolant channel flow field.
