FINER POINTS is the oldest publication devoted exclusively to the understanding, selection andapplication of diamond, cubic boron nitride and related materials. It is edited for recipients who areinvolved in some way with these “superabrasives”, either as providers of the materials, producers ofproducts containing the materials or users of these products (e.g., grinding wheels, dressing tools, drill bits, saw blades, sawing wires, cutting tools, polishing compounds, CVD film products, etc.).

A Finer Point of View...In hard numbers, current global recessionis measured as 40% decrease of globaleconomy and fifty million lost jobs. Sofar, twelve trillion dollars have been spentto boost economic recovery. The goodnews is that the global recession iscoming to an end and the recovery mightprove a little stronger than previouslypredicted. We are now wondering howthe global economy will recover and alsohow the world will look after thisrecession. The consensus seems to be thatthe current global crisis will producesignificant changes to the consumptionmodel and to our way of life. Welcome tothe era that will, according to pundits, prove a challenging and lean one. Onethat will test us on many fronts –financially, socially, economically.... As weknow, all lives on Earth depend on thetransfers of energy and matter/mass.According to Einstein’s theory of relativitymass and energy are inter-convertible: E =mc^2. Also, the principle of matter/massconservation states that in a closed systemthe total amount of mass/matter remainsconstant over time, regardless of theprocesses acting inside it. Consequently, matter cannot be created/destroyed; itmay be transformed into differentstates/phases (solid, liquid, gas, plasma,“condensates”). Therefore, the totalnumber of atoms in the Earth is constant(has not changed since its birth), and isestimated to be 10^49 – 10^50. In otherwords, with the exception of sunlight, theamount of energy-matter on Earth isfinite. Many economists believe stronglythat the road map to recovery is based onconsumption. However, there is growingconcern that, as long as the goal ofexpanding consumption is consideredlegitimate, we are in danger of repeatingpast mistakes, as well as, overshootingplanetary limits. Sustainable developmentis development that meets the needs ofthe present without compromising theability of future generations to meet theirown needs. This means that to achieve anacceptable quality of life now and forfuture generations, the production andconsumption of goods and services andtheir impact on environment must notexceed the carrying capacity of theenvironment. Climate change, peak oiland all the other unfolding crisesassociated with pollution and resourcedepletion are all symptoms of oneproblem: over consumption andoverproduction. If we want to resolve anyof the problems arising because we aredepleting Earth resources, we have toacknowledge our changed circumstancesand set the goal of sustainability as thebasic principle for decision making. If weare heading into new times, the realsustaining change will have to be drivenby “smart consumption”, whichencourages greater product and serviceeffectiveness, efficiency (in terms ofresource utilization, etc) and longevity.

We will need to invest more time andenergy to rethink and redesign products, services, etc., that are essential to ourfuture welfare and wellbeing. Evidentlyinnovation is a key ingredient, in the waywe redesign products and services to bemore efficient, more environmentallyfriendly, more user centered, morecommunity oriented. Innovation has anincredibly important role to play inensuring that products and services arebetter suited to this age of scarcity(whether scarcity of credit, naturalresources, food and water, etc.) that wehave arrived to. While innovation is notthe answer to all problems, it is anessential element to moving beyondshort-term band-aid mentality approachesin hard times. The real cycling upturns arenot magical or predestined but discoveriesof new technologies – bronze, iron, paper, gunpowder, steam engines, scientificchemistry, penicillin, plastics, computersand Internet, to name just few. It wouldbe nice to know what is coming next. Thediscovery of synthetic diamond in 1954opened the era of superabrasive materials,a lot more efficient and environmentallyfriendly compared to abrasive materials.Just think of the impact the replacementof abrasives with superabrasives andmined diamond with synthetic diamondhas on efficiency, productivity andenvironment. As the premier organizationof the superabrasives industry, the IDAneeds to intensify its efforts in promotingthe development of superabrasivematerials and products, and, particularly, the expansion of their application inindustry. As individuals and businesses,we need to change, innovate, transform, and in the years to come we will need todo so more than ever.

SUPERABRASIVES MAKE IT LEAN AND TURN IT GREENIndustry as a whole constantly reacts to current business initiatives or what those of usjokingly refer to as the Flavor-of-the-Month! They have ranged from industry wide programslike Six Sigma, Electronic Commerce, Company Wellness and Self-directed Workforce tocompany “inhouse” projects like Best Buy, Quality First, Employee Recognition Awards andvarious Diversity related programs and themes. Most of these programs or tactics have beenvery worthwhile and delivered tremendous results when taken to heart and followed asintended. While every new idea has its naysayers, the fact is every good idea has its merits andthose who embrace the positive will always find positive results. The key to success is toproperly apply and execute depending on the psyche and attitude of the workforce and thecommitment of management to the program. Two current initiatives relate to developingbusiness plans for lean and green manufacturing. The concept and approach of “lean” is thateverything used in production or manufacturing should be strictly applied for the value ofthe final product ... everything else is wasteful and should be eliminated. A major approachto lean manufacturing puts the focus upon improving the flow of work, which exposesquality problems that already existed, and thus waste reduction is a naturallyoccuring result. Simply put we arelooking for more value with less work.Isn’t the credo of superabrasives morevalue with less work? This should be aneasy sell to manufacturing.

The other main initiative facing all globalmanufacturers is the push to go green.Whether we like it or not, governmentsare demanding more environmentallyfriendly production operations.Companies now must be energyconscious while eliminating waste andharmful emissions.

Manufacturing giants are leading the wayin selling and advertising they are greenbecause they feel with more regulationsand stricter standards, they can hold asuperior advantage over companies thatare slow to react. Green is here and onlyby embracing the idea and getting in linewith controls can companies hope tosurvive. Governments will demand morelimits and enforce compliance.Furthermore, consumers are taking ahard look at suppliers to make sure theyare doing everything possible to adhereto the green philosophy. Some have evenissued policies limiting business onlywith proven green companies. Everyoneis energy conscious and people arelooking at ways to reduce the use ofenergy and wisely use the energy in theiroperations. Now when we go into officebuildings we see the lights out in roomsunoccupied and we get a sense thateveryone is taking green to heart inbusiness and their personal actions. Hereagain, superabrasives are a perfect fit. Ifindustry wants to reduce waste, eliminatehazardous materials this is the obviouschoice.

Going green and getting lean are drivingforces for industry today and a perfect fitfor the increased application ofsuperabrasives. The writing is on thewall, we just have to help everyone readthe words and take them to heart.

NIABRAZECORPORATIONINTRODUCES THEIRSECURED DIAMONDSAW (SDS) WIREFor wafering and cuttinghard, brittle materialswithout the use of slurries.SDS wire is manufacturedusing an electrolytic platingprocess to secure finemicron diamond particles to

the surface of high tensile strength steel wire with uniformconcentricity and diamond exposure. SDS wire allows forenvironmentally friendly cutting because the only cuttingsolution needed is water along with a biodegradablemachining surfactant. Most materials can be processed at2-3 times the rate of slurry sawing and SDS wire iscompatible with most single and multi-wire saws currentlybeing used today. Thomas Bluemle, Vice President ofNiabraze Corporation says “ Niabraze is very encouragedby the opportunities their SDS wire presents because ofthe demand for thin kerf cutting of expensive hard to cutmaterials. Our diamond wire is a comparable alternative tocurrent fixed grain diamond wire in the market but also asa cost effective and clean conversion for operationscurrently slurry sawing.” Niabraze encourages thoseinterested to visit their website,www.niabraze.com

WALL COLMONOY CORPORATIONINTRODUCES COLMONOY 88 FORWASTE TO ENERGY PLANTSOver three years ago, a large waste-to-energy plant performedthe first large-scale test of a Colmonoy spray-and-fuse alloy. The tubes were coated 25 feet in length and 2.5" in diameter. Tube-metal temperaturesapproached 900 F, and the boiler ran 24/7. The tubes are vital components of asuperheater in one of the boilers, and a way of protecting the tubes to extend their lifefrom, at best. Colmonoy 88 extends boiler tube life, especially in the secondarysuperheater section of a boiler where the most severe environment exists for mass burnand refuse derived fuel boilers. The waste to energy plant is pleased with the test resultsand plans to test Colmonoy 88 in two other plants. For further information aboutthis application, please contact [email protected]
