CVHS INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC POPS CONCERT / MAY 4. 2018 / 7:00 PM

It is time once again to pause, sit back, and enjoy another amazing evening of CV Instrumental Music. Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, String Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, and Concert Band have all been hard at work preparing for tonight’s annual POPS Concert, “A Night of Heroes”.

We are very fortunate to live in a community that values music and the fine arts so highly, and we are all tremendously grateful to have the amazing instrumental music program that we have here at CV. There are so many ‘heroes’ to be thanked for helping to make it all possible.

Thank you to the many volunteer heroes - our instrumental music parents, our fellow music families and friends, and our local community businesses - for your volunteer time, for your monetary contributions, and for your donations of items such as snacks and bottled water, whenever there was a need. The continued success of instrumental music at CV depends heavily upon your support, and the program continues to thrive as a direct result of your contributions. The CVIM Foundation thanks you, and greatly appreciates your steadfast support.

Thank you to Mr. Schick, our Instrumental Music Director Hero. It has been a year of tremendous achievements and successes. They are all a direct result of everything that you do, year after year, for the instrumental music program at CV. You continuously inspire our students to thrive and excel in all that they do, and for that, we are tremendously grateful.

Tonight, we celebrate the true heroes of this evening - our hardworking and talented CV instrumental musicians. Congratulations on the amazingly successful year that you have had. You have once again achieved some of the highest levels of music performance at festivals and competitions in CVHS history. The numerous accomplishments, achievements, and awards that you have received are a direct result of your hard work and dedication. We are all tremendously proud of all of you.

DEAR FELLOW INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC FAMILIES AND FRIENDS,

THANK YOU INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC DONORS. . .

Sincerely,

Fred DavisCVIM FOUNDATION PRESIDENT

When you think of a hero, what do you think of? A) A mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability B ) An illustrious warriorC ) A person admired for achievements and noble qualitiesD ) One who shows great courageE ) All of the Above

If you chose “E,” then according to the Merriam Webster Dictionary you are correct. Incidentally, there are alternate definitions in the Dictionary which include “An object of extreme admiration and devotion,” and “The central figure in an event, period or movement.”

A hero can mean many things to many people, and tonight we have a collection of music which reflect a diversity of heroic ideas, characters, and stories.

To illustrate definition “A,” growing up, I was an avid collector of comic books. I still have over 6,000 books neatly stored in a closet somewhere. One of my greatest pleasures of reading comics was living vicariously through the heroes in the story as they encountered a problem, failed at their first attempt, then regrouped to overcome and defeat the bad guys thus saving the day. (Until the next day…) It gave me strength in knowing that we can learn from our mistakes and persevere to overcome obstacles.

This year, I polled our students on who their heroes were, and I was impressed when the most prominent people mentioned were family members. This reflects definition “C.” Being a parent means giving up many individual wants and desires. It impressed me that many of our students were aware how much their parents do for them and wrote them down as their personal heroes. Moms of course were #1.

Definition “D” highlights our first responders, fire and police personnel and other public servants. It takes great courage to risk one’s life in a disaster and I feel we can definitely agree that those people deserve the title of “Hero.”

We might even think of definition “B” as our troops in the military who risk their lives every day to protect the citizens of our country.

Whatever you define as a hero, I am confident that you will enjoy the selections we perform for you tonight. Please sit back and enjoy as we perform music from pop culture to illustrate comic, movie and literary heroes as well as a moving musical tribute to the victims and first responders from 9/11.

It’s been a wonderful year filled with many achievements and I’m proud to showcase our amazing Instrumental Music Program for you tonight.

Musically yours,

Welcome to the 2018 Pops Concert!
