CWW PROGRAM 2012 - 2013

Page 5: CWW Handbook 2012-2013

VISION AND PHILOSOPHY OFTHE CLASSROOM WITHOUT WALLS (CWW)

PROGRAM AT CNG2012 - 2013

Classroom Without Walls(CWW) is an experiential learning program intended to give students outside of the classroom learning opportunities. Students will be able to engage in educational field trips which take place in Bogotá, its suburbs, the various regions of Colombia, and foreign countries.

At CNG we envision CWW as part of our formal curriculum, therefore all CNG students, from K4-12th grade, are encouraged to participate. All CWW trips have been aligned directly with the school’s cur-riculum and instructional programs. As a result we have developed specific learning targets and as-sessments.

Aims of the CWW Program:

• Ensure that all destinations address the emotional, cognitive, and physical needs of the students at each grade level.

• Provide students with the opportunity to learn outside of the daily classroom, thus allowing them to use their prior knowledge and make connections between disciplines and the real world.

• Ensure that all trips are educational and are directly aligned with CNG’s curriculum.

• Promote a stronger sense of Community between students and faculty.

• Promote personal growth, maturity, and inter-personal relationships in all students.

• Provide students an increased sense of independence and responsibility.

• Promote a deeper understanding of Colombia’s culture, history and geography; exposure to people and culture from other countries; and a sense of environmental responsibility and awareness.

• Ensure that all CNG students understand that they are expected to play an active part in service learning activities and view these as an essential part of their education.

SAFETY PROCEDURES CRITERIA

The nature and purpose of specific CWW trips may expose students to a degree of risk not typical of the regular on-campus setting. Since trips which involve travel, physical activity, and exploration are not risk free, all trips are subject to a risk and safety assessment. The following criteria have been established in order to assess and minimize the potential risks associated with CWW trips. All trips are subject to the following:

1. The Athletics & Co-Curricular Activities Office will ensure that the Risk Management Plan as specified within the ISO 9001 Quality Management Policy is implemented for all CWW trips in coordination with the desig-nated Outdoor Education Company.

2. The designated Outdoor Education Company will carry out a Risk Analysis for all the activities planned throughout the trip. This document will be provided to the Office of Athletics & Co-Curricular Activities prior to the trip.

3. A Medical Doctor and /or Paramedic must accompany all CWW trips. These professional personnel will be provided by the Outdoor Education Company.

4. All air and land travel arrangement will be done directly by the Office of Athletics & Co-Curricular Activities in conjunction with a travel agency and the designated Outdoor Education Company. The service providers must comply with the safety and security requirements required by CNG.

5. All CWW participants must have health insurance coverage.

6. Activities which require rigorous physical exercise or special skills may require mandatory pre-course train-ing or assessment.

7. Prior to departure, review of student health records shall be conducted. Parents will be required to inform trip sponsors of any special health related issues regarding their child(ren).

8. Access to emergency medical care, communication channels, travel conditions, and evacuation procedures must be confirmed for all trips. Such information must be communicated to all participants and parents prior to departure.
