The Velo29 town centre cycle races returned to Bishop Auckland on Wednesday 12th August, and the town turned out en-masse to show their support. The event, which is organised by Durham County Council, Velo29 and supported by
the Town Council, aims to boost the local economy and encourage healthy lifestyles. As well as the adult elite race there were also competitive junior races. The evening began with ‘Ride Bishop’, a recreational event in which sixty people
took part in the hour-long event, which included an adults’ only session and a superhero family fun ride. Matti Hemmings, the BMX Flatland rider, who currently holds the Guinness World Records Title for most BMX cliffhanger spins in one minute, entertained the crowds with an array of BMX tricks.Local lad Matthew Kipling won the men’s-only elite race, scooping a prize pot of £1,500.Councillor Lee Brownson, Mayor of Bishop Auckland, said, “It was exciting to see the event return to Bishop Auckland and I especially enjoyed taking part in the family ride. It is a thrilling spectical for local people and visitors to the town. It helps the local economy and encourages people to lead healthy lifestyles.”The event was supported by Durham County Councillor Sam Zair, who contributed £2,000 from his neighbour-hood budget.A Bike4Life weekly cycle ride will start on Monday 7th September from 10am at Auckland Castle. The ride and use of bikes and helmets are free of charge.
On your marks for trail raceRunners of all ages are being urged to put their best foot forward and sign-up for two new races being held against the picturesque backdrop of medieval Auckland Castle. It is hoped the inaugural five mile Auckland Castle Trail Race and separate two mile fun run planned for 30th August, will become a popular annual addition to the area’s sporting calendar.Starting at Auckland Castle’s iconic Robinson Clocktower and Gateshouse, the all-terrain five mile trail race is aimed at the over-16s and will take competitors past the walled garden and into the historic 200 acre Deer Park, which the Prince Bishops of Durham once used as their outdoor gym.The fun run is open to both under-16s and under-eights accompanied by an adult, and is a gentler two mile course through the park with its 18th century deer house, ancient woodland,
bridges and views over the rolling County Durham countryside.Eddie Murphy, Gareth Shaw and Chris Griffith of Shildon Running and Athletic Club, in association with Auckland Castle and Durham County Council, are the driving forces behind the event. Bishop Auckland Town Council has donated £200 towards the organisational costs in the hope it will become a permanent annual fixture. The trail race costs £10 on the day with all runners receiving a free T-shirt. The fun run is £3 with all par-ticipants getting a medal.Eddie said, “The races are non-competitive, so there’s no need to worry about being fit or fast. It doesn’t matter if you walk, jog or run your way around the course.“It’s about taking part and having a great day out with your friends and family for what must be one of the most scenic events of its kind.”

At the beginning of August, Sainsbury’s Bishop Auckland launched a part-nership with their new Local Charity of the Year, Wear Valley Riding for the Disabled.Wear Valley RDA were chosen by Sainsbury’s customers at the beginning of July and the charity will now receive a year’s worth of support through fund-raising and awareness from the store. Representatives from the charity joined Sains-bury’s colleagues over the weekend to kick start the fundraising with a tombola
and awareness stand. Kath Scales, a trustee at Wear Valley RDA, which is based at Escomb, said, “Sainsbury’s Local Charity of the Year scheme has made a real difference to many charities over the last few years and we’re delighted to have been selected. We’re really looking forward to getting started and raising awareness of our cause as well as raising vital funds to continue our work of improving the health and welfare of disabled people in our community and throughout County
Durham.”Christine Jeffery, Store Manager at Sainsbury’s Bishop Auckland, added, “We’re really looking forward to working with Wear Valley RDA over the next year and the team have some great ideas for fundraising. We hope our support will make a real difference to the charity, and customers enjoy the variety of activities we are planning.”The Local Charity scheme is now in its seventh year and has raised over £7 million to support local charities since 2009.
Wear Valley Musical Theatre Company (originally known as Bishop Auckland Operatic Society), gave its final performance earlier this year. The group generously decided to donate out-standing funds to support local causes and Marie Curie, which provides end of life care to those suffering from terminal illness.
At the recent meeting of the Bishop Auckland Fun-draising Group for Marie Curie, Chair Elizabeth Varley, together with Area Fundraiser Lisa Corfield, accepted a cheque for £1,000 from Joan Bellis, Chair of Wear Valley Musical Theatre, on behalf of the charity. The money will be used to benefit those in the local area.

Blooming marvellous response to wildflowersImpressed onlookers have been going wild for an array of colourful roadside floral displays in Bishop Auckland.Various species of wild-flowers and herbaceous plants have been planted on roundabouts and verges as part of Durham County Council’s wildflower planting scheme. The eye-catching creations, courtesy of the council’s Clean and Green teams, include annuals such as poppies and cornflowers, as well as perennial plants such as oxeye daisies and scabious. Together they not only provide colourful displays, but are perfect habitats for pollinators such as bees and butterflies. They have attracted acclaim from residents and visitors to the county who have been raving about how the displays have brightened up their areas.Planting has been completed on roundabouts and verges on the A688 at Bishop Auckland and St Helen Auckland, and at the Bishop Auckland town recreation ground. Cllr Brian Stephens, Cabinet member for neighbourhoods and local partnerships, said, “We are delighted with feedback received so far from residents, members of the public, visitors and commuters who have passed on their compli-
ments at how attractive the wildflowers are.”Oliver Sherratt, head of direct services at Durham County Council, added, “At times of austerity we look at providing planting schemes that not only benefit the natural envi-ronment but also reduce maintenance costs. While still in trial stages, we do
expect the perennial plants to flower for several years with less need for grass cutting.A member of the public commented on the flowers: “I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen a more stunningly attractive roadside scheme done by any council ever (not that I’ve seen them all!)”
The final concert in Bishop Auckland Music Society's 2015 programme will take place on Friday 4th September at 7.30pm in the Throne Room at Auckland Castle, when the Meryon Trio will perform works by Beethoven, Debussy and Brahms. All

Church View Residential Care Home in South Church is to hold a Garden Tea Party on Saturday 29th August at 2pm, to celebrate the unveiling of a memorial bench. The memorial bench was funded by home resident Robert Hope in memory of his partner, Ada Elliot, also a resident, who passed away suddenly in January this year.Activity Co-ordinator, Janine Humble said, Robert
loved our garden and buys all the flowers that are planted each year. He wanted to commemorate Ada and he felt the best way to do that was to pay for a bench in the beautiful garden.“The tea party is open to the public and we are looking forward to the Mayor of Bishop Auckland, Cllr Lee Brownson, cutting the ribbon to unveil the bench. All are welcome to attend.”

A taste of life during Roman times
A popular re-enactment of life in Roman times is set to wow crowds once again this Bank Holiday.Roman forces will meet native tribesmen in live combat at Binchester Roman Fort on August Bank Holiday Monday.Various re-enactment groups will use archery, slingstaffs and a full scale replica of a Roman artillery catapult, known as a ballista, to entertain crowds and give an insight into what life was like under the control of Imperial Rome.Artisans and craftspeople will showcase their wares
in a tented street market and guided tours of the new excavations will be available.Dr David Mason, principal archaeologist with Durham County Council, said, “Last month’s event proved very popular and we had some wonderful feedback from families which came along.“In addition to seeing aspects of Roman life and combat, wonderfully recreated by re-enactors, this will be the last oppor-tunity this year for people to view the spectacularly well-preserved remains. “They form part of the
regimental bath-building which has walls still standing to a height of more than two metres above Roman floor level.” The fun begins at 11am and is repeated at 2pm on Monday 31st August. Adult entry is £5 with con-cessions £4 and children £3 (Under 4s are free). The event is run by Durham County Council’s Archaeology Section, supported by staff of Ar-chaeological Services at Durham University and volunteers from the Archi-tectural and Archaeologi-cal Society of Durham and Northumberland.
Members of Nordmanni Living History Group thrilled the crowds with their fighting skills at last month’s event.
The Mayor of Bishop Auckland, Councillor Lee Brownson, is holding a comedy night at Heritage Park, Bishop FC’s football ground on Friday 18th September. There will be three comedians on the night: multi award winning Rudi West, comedy impres-sionist Terry Joyce and Tony Washington, with his tribute to the North East's legend Bobby Thompson.Cllr Brownson said, “I am sure this event will be an enjoyable night with plenty of laughs. In addition to the comedians there will also be a raffle, stand up bingo, ‘Play Your Cards Right’ and
a game of heads and tails.“All proceeds from the night will go towards my chosen charity of the year – Help for Heroes.”An auction will also take place when brand new 2015/16 signed and framed football shirts from both Sunderland AFC and Bishop Auckland FC will go to the highest bidders on the night. Tickets are priced at £15 each and will include a pie and peas supper. For more information or to purchase tickets, contact Sheila Horner at Bishop Auckland Town Council on 01388 609852 or email [email protected].

A local care home had great fun last weekend, holding a summer fayre for residents and visitors.Sandringham Care Home, on Escomb Road, held the event on Saturday 15th August and staff were pleased to see the sun shining. Residents, staff, and visitors flocked to see the jewellery stalls, second hand goods, cakes and crafts that were on sale. But the biggest draw of the day was, once again, the tombola.“We decided at our Christmas fayre to have two tombolas, a regular one and an alcohol one, and people loved them.
So we knew it was a must again this summer,” said a spokesperson. The fayre raised a total of £300, which will be used for residents’ activities, including day trips and visiting entertainers. The Care Home is currently seeking a volunteer to help run their sweet shop. The shop is open from 10am to 11am (when the trolley is usually taken around the home to sell goods,) then from 2 till 3 on an afternoon. If you would like to help, whether it is just one day a week or several, contact the manager on 01388 660960 for more informa-tion.
Crowds turned out in the glorious sunshine to see the first Bishop Auckland Town Show earlier this month. The event, which featured free entertainment in the Market Place along with the regular Saturday Market, was officially opened by the Mayor, Councillor Lee Brownson who said, “What a fantastic day for the people of Bishop Auckland, it was great to see the crowds all enjoying themselves. “The market stalls were
busy with shoppers and the entertainment was loved by the families and children.”The Horticultural show which was held in the Town Hall was also a resounding success. Exhibitors proudly showed their vegetables, flowers, baked goods and jams and at the end of the show all produce was auctioned off, where proceeds raised a fantastic £142 for the Mayor’s charity Help for Heroes.A spokesperson for Bishop
Auckland Town Council said, “We would like to thank all of the exhibitors who took part in the show and made it a success. All of the entrants were fantastic and entered into the community spirit of the show. We would also like to thank Trevor Hogg, Bobby Latcham, Chris Tyrie, Chris Davidson and Liz Drake who helped to organise and run the show on the day, without their help and expertise the show would not have taken place”.

A local man who ran an illegal waste disposal site in West Auckland has been ordered to pay back £350,000 under the Proceeds of Crime Act.Tony Leigh Shepherd, of Winston, pleaded guilty to two offences of operating an illegal waste site at West Musgrave Farm, St Helen Auckland, between August 2009 and March 2011 at a court hearing in late 2013.The 41 year-old could also have to pay back just under £1.2 million – the agreed benefit sum of his criminal activities – if he comes into future assets. He also pleaded guilty to a third charge of
operating an illegal waste site at Barrier Works on Hackworth Industrial Estate in Shildon, between December 2010, and July 2011.The Environment Agency claims that he had been running a waste transfer facility on the land – illegally depositing, sorting and storing mixed household and industrial waste. He appeared at Teesside Crown Court on 24th February 2014, where he was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years.Environment Agency officers then began pro-ceedings to recover the
value of his available assets that the Agency claims were obtained through crime. On Monday 17th August 2015, following a confisca-tion hearing at Teesside Crown Court under the Proceeds of Crime Act, Mr Shepherd was ordered to pay back £350,000. It is one of the biggest seizures of cash by the Environment Agency in the North-East to date, and he could face a prison sentence if he fails to pay. And, if he comes into future assets he could have to pay back more of the £1.168million agreed benefit sum, according to the Agency.

Shop wraps show possibilities for Bishop Auckland
Businesses wanting to join in the exciting op-portunities coming to Bishop Auckland can have a glimpse of the future at two premises in the town centre.A vacant shop and a devel-opment site on Newgate Street have been covered with ‘shop wraps’ to show potential owners what they could look like. One has been made to look like a florist’s and the other an art gallery, which will feature regularly updated images from the Auckland Castle Trust’s range of exciting projects for the area. The project, funded by Durham County Council, is a result of the partnership work between the County
Council, Town Council, Auckland Castle Trust and the Bishop Auckland Town Team to continue the re-generation of the town. Cllr Neil Foster, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for economic regeneration and culture, said, “The shop wraps are the latest in our ongoing partnership work to transform Bishop Auckland. The wraps improve the look of the whole street and will hopefully encourage even more new businesses to come to the town by really showing potential owners what they could look like.”Ann Cooper, head of com-munications for Auckland Castle Trust, said, “As well as improving the look
of an empty town centre property it also means we can keep local residents up to date with all the exciting developments as the projects move forward. We’ll be changing the panels in the gallery every three or four months so keep looking to see the latest pictures and news.”The project is one of a number of schemes designed to improve the town centre and encourage and support local businesses. Durham County Council is also offering businesses in the area investment funding of up to £10,000 to contribute towards projects to improve premises. Interested businesses can find out more by calling 03000 262052.

essential (you can just write lyrics or get someone else to play them).Following the two-day summer school, a Cuckoo Young Writers group will be established in Bishop Auckland, where keen young writers can continue to flex their song writing muscles with Martin. This will culminate in a per-formance at Bishop Auckland Castle as part of Durham Book Festival in October. The summer school will take place on Thursday 27th and Friday 28th August, 11am-4pmIf you’d like more informa-tion or to sign up, email [email protected] or phone 0191 204 8852.
