THE FOOTBALL RAMBLER

It’s not over til it’s over – Football’s greatest comebacks

When players are being taught the basics of the game as youngsters,

one of the key messages is to play until the final whistle. If your team goes a couple ofgoals down more often than not the result will not be in your favour, but sometimes

the spectacular can happen.

Here are football’s ten greatest comebacks (arguably):

Liverpool vs AC Milan

Liverpool fans travelled to Istanbul for the 2005 Champions League final against AC

Milan with great expectations. However after seeing their side slip to a 3-0 half time

deficit, not even the most ardent Merseyside supporter could have imagined their team’s comeback. Goals from Steven Gerrard, Vladimir Smicer and Xabi Alonso

brought the game back level, and the Reds claimed victory in the eventual penalty

shoot out.

Tottenham vs Manchester United

Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United side found themselves

3-0 down at the hands of Tottenham in September 2001, with

goals from debutant Dean Richards, Christian Ziege and Les

Ferdinand giving the White Hart Lane hosts a comfortablelead. However a Spurs capitulation and strikes from Andy

Cole, Laurent Blanc, Ruud van Nistlerooy, Juan Sebastian

Veron and David Beckham saw United win 5-3.

Tottenham vs Manchester City

Tottenham found themselves three goals to the good once more in February 2004,

this time against the Blue side of Manchester. Ledley King, Robbie Keane and

Christian Ziege (again) had Spurs in a dominant position, and Joey Barton had been

sent off for City. Despite this, the ten-man visitors rallied in the second period and

goals from Sylvain Distin, Paul Bosvelt, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Jonathan Macken

gave City an unlikely win.

Cheltenham vs Burton Albion

Cheltenham fans won’t forget March 13th 2010 any time soon, as their side came

back from losing 5-3 against Burton Albion with five minutes remaining to win 6-5. A

Justin Richards strike and two late goals in the dying minutes by Michael Pook saw The

Robins record a memorable victory.

Bayer Uerdingen vs Dynamo Dresden

Going back to 1986, Dynamo Dresden had beaten Bayer Uerdingen 2-0 in the first leg

of a German cup tie, and were again winning 3-1

at half time in the second leg to give them a

seemingly unassailable 5-1 aggregate lead with

45 minutes to play. However Uerdingen hadn’tread the script and scored six unanswered goals

in the second half to record a historic 7-5

aggregate win.

Deportivo La Coruna vs AC Milan

After a commanding 4-1 win at the San Siro, Carlo Ancelotti’s AC Milan side looked

destined for the 2004 Champions League semi finals. However Deportivo had other

ideas, as Walter Pandiani, Juan Carlos Valeron, Alberto Luque and Fran all scored at

the Riazor to send the Spaniards into ecstasy in a 4-0 win.

Mancheter United vs Bayern Munich

Forever etched into Manchester United fans’ memories, the 1999 Champions League

final must go down as one of the best comebacks of all time. With a 1-0 deficit to

overcome and the game in injury time, substitutes Teddy Sheringham and Ole

Gunnar Solskjaer both found the net in stoppage time to give the Englishmen a 2-1

victory at the Camp Nou.

Fulham vs Juventus

Fulham’s first ever appearance in the Europa League in 2010 was an eventful one,

and they met Italian giants Juventus in the round of 16. After a 3-1 defeat in Turin,

both sides had scored at Craven Cottage to given Juve a comfortable 4-2

aggregate advantage. However a Bobby Zamora strike, a brace from Zoltan Gera

and an 82nd minute winner from Clint Dempsey gave The Cottagers an

unforgettable 5-4 aggregate victory.

Chelsea vs Arsenal

Tore Andre Flo and Dan Petrescu had given Chelsea a 2-0 lead against Arsenal back in 1999, and the Stamford Bridge club looked comfortable amongst their fans chants

of ‘we want five’. However Arsene Wenger threw on Nigerian striker Nwankwo Kanu,

who duly scored a hat-trick to give the Gunners a 3-2 win in wet and windy

conditions.

Metz vs Barcelona

Back in the 1984 European Cup Winners Cup, Spanish giants

Barcelona had a 5-2 aggregate lead over French

opponents Metz after a 4-2 victory in the away leg and an

early goal at the Camp Nou. However, the Stade Municipal

outfit scored four goals to record a 5-4 victory over theCatalans, with Zvonko Kurbos grabbing a hat-trick to ensure

we are talking about him over 25 years later.

COACHES BOX

Camel ye Faithful:

A curious sight greeted our players on their arrival at New Norfolk on

Saturday when among the spectators at the curtain raiser (a Division C

match between New Norfolk C and Beachside) was a camel. This

novelty was a delight for our young players who spent a large portion of

the time leading up to the match patting and feeding the camel which although it

may have been a distraction was, from a coach’s perspective, infinitely preferable to

them injuring themselves and each other in the warm-up with the kind of hard

tackling we never see them delivering in an actual match. As we only had ten

players, hence we were one short I was relieved that only one of our players, namely

Jake Buckland, injured himself warming up when he took a whack in the knee. I

thanked my New Norfolk counterpart for laying on the pre-match entertainment only

to be met with a confused look (they had assumed it was our mascot). In any case a

spokesman for the governing body was quick to comment that “the presence of a

camel at a regular, bread and butter, match in Southern Tasmania can only be good

for the game. Next year we will consider raising registration fees and allocating a

branded model camel made out of lego to each registered junior for them to

assemble at their leisure”. All the confusion dissipated just as the teams were about to

kick off when running across the Tynwald turf we saw none other than keffiyeh clad

Emeritus Professor of the University of the United Arab Emirates, one Abdullah

MacDullah, who had apparently evaded his captors (see last week’s story). The

Good Professor is a world authority in the Hendricks and Robey predictive formula

(not reproduced here as its getting somewhat repetitive and tiresome) which uses the

coefficient of variation to erm predict future results, and he came bringing somestaggering insights:

1.  “Last time Cygnet played New Norfolk you lost 0-4!!” (Eds Comment: that’s not

predictive).

2.  “You only have ten players for an eleven a side match!!”

(Eds Comment: a quick headcount had already confirmed that).

3.  “The player shortfall will render your player rotational system somewhat

ineffective!!”

(Eds Comment: this joker’s a charlatan – worse than useless!!).

A quick phone call was soon followed by the sound of blaring sirens announcing the

arrival of the Australian Immigration Police who quickly overpowered the hapless

professor taking him and his equally hapless camel into custody to be handed over to

the state secret police of any country who will take them.

With Jake hobbling about the park we quickly went down 0-1 and we could almost

hear the ghosts of H&R sniggering in the background (and I’m not taking Puff n’ Stuff).Just when things were looking at their most bleak Rowan Shelton latched onto a pass

to tap in from fully two yards out, before Isaac Beecroft outpaced their defense to

put us 2-1 up. Rowan then had to leave the field for seven minutes when taking a

whack in the ligament that joins the rib to the jaw. Archie Cumper was playing a

blinder and commanding his goal area but even with Ryan Lottering and Hugh

McGarry in outstanding form in defense, he could do nothing to prevent their pacey

players playing clever through balls down our left side to enable the home side to

grab a couple and hence we went towards the half time cuppa (one hump or two?)

with a 2-3 deficit. We bolstered our left side defense playing Vincent Chancellor wide

and Finley Gorringe left of center and though we rode our luck at times we didn’tconcede from that source. It was in the second half that our clearly fatigued players

stepped up. Battling against lack of rotation opportunities as well as sweltering

temperatures which we can only assume arrived courtesy of the Good Professor and

his Camel we took the game to the home side. After the match both the referee and

their coach commented on how well we knocked the ball around. Christian Sayers

brought us level at 3-3 with his customary goal, of the type only he seems able to

score. With Christian along with Jake, Isaac and Josh Wilson combining impressively in

attack a lead was on the cards and it came about when Jake, having shaken off his

earlier soreness, followed up in predatory fashion to knock Christian’s skewed shot

from out on the left, into the goal and we were 4-3 up. New Norfolk though haveproved all season that they’re a fine team playing fast flowing attacking football and

their lofty ladder position is no accident. With a few minutes left they got the equalizer

that their build up play had warranted and though it then became open end to end

stuff with both teams in turn looking like grabbing what would have been a winner, 4-

4 was a fair result. Would we have won with eleven players?? Who knows?? But it was

certainly a great show of character and effort from the team, playing some great

football. Well done team!! (Eds note: Your use of the trusty of paragraph is still

amazing)

8. Match Reports

Cygnet U/6It was good to see our youngest team stamp their mark on the competition. This was the only

team we had not yet beaten, and today was our day. We quickly put a stop to the rough play

with a couple of quick penalties. This forced the much larger boys to play with their feet and not

their shoulders. This made all the difference, we were much better at soccer than them. With no

subs available we had to keep putting in for the whole game. Charlie Hooper was slow to warmup, but soon found his form. Charlie scored 4 goals and gave St Aloysius a lesson in ball control.

Charlie Gorringe played his usual powerhouse game and scored 2 goals along with several near

misses. William was all over the place today, causing confusion to the opposition and sometimes

himself. Flynn did some good kicks and kept himself in the game.

Another fantastic effort by the team showing real improvement in their team work.

Calvin started strong early with a goal but this just fired our boys up. Rory scored a brilliant first goal

after being well set up by Benny. As usual Rory showed great tenacity the rest of the game and

came close to scoring again.

Huon again demonstrated his fancy footwork and strong left and right boot! He had a very close

call with the goal which had all spectators on the edge of their seats. Harry did the save of the

season with his brilliant ball skills in defence. He continues to improve with every match and great

to see his confidence growing.

Benny set up a couple of great goals and also scored 2 of his own. Was great see him thinking

strategically along with the rest of the team. Tommy was the star scorer of the day with his 3 goals

and great control of the ball (even though he was not operating on all cylinders). Great effort

Tommy and well done to the whole team.

Cygnet U7 Green 6 def Calvin Black 1 (Tommy 3, Benny 2, Huon 1)

Cygnet U/7 White

Well we really met our match this week. Kingborough Lions were a very strong team. They played

the ball hard with both their attacking and defense. Our efforts to score were met with deter-

mend and successful defense. When we came together we played well and some great goals

were scored. Our passing and calling for for the ball continue to improve. Great effort boys.

Cygnet U7 White 4 lost to Kingborough Lions Green 6 (Floyd 3, Matthew 1)

Cygnet U/8 Green

Prior to kick off a number of the kids and myself were scratching our heads. First I was asked could

I ref the whole match as the coach is not around, then I looked at the opposition and thought

they looked like our fierce rivals for the season in the Lions White (We are the only team to have

beaten the White this year). We were meant to be playing the Lions Gold whom did not want to

come up to Div 1 but did seem to have much choice and have since received many thrashings

(Relayed from their parent temp coach).

I checked with a few parents and it seems that only a handful of Lions Gold kids were healthy and

as the Lions White had their match cancelled, most of them filled in. So in reality this was a

showdown between the number 1 and 2 teams in the division.

Once this confusion settled, I thought I would measure the goal posts. I have been surprised at the

difference in various grounds goal post widths this year. I stepped it out to about 2.5m wide,

putting it just within the CRJSA rules. Of which I also discovered that anything from 2m to 5m wideis legal.

The game was a tight affair in the opening stanza with the ball in the middle of the pitch. After a

few neat passes from our twins Kate and Holly with Lauren and Big Ethan taking aim and Zac

trying a long ranger, the game moved more into our oppositions half as we dominated field

position.

The opposition got numbers (the whole team) in front of their goal and it seemed it would be very

difficult to get a ball into these 2.5m wide goals with 7 players in front of them. But alas the ball

came out of the huddle via a little flick pass and little Ethan was there to nail it into the goals. 1-0

in front.

I thought this goal might open the flood gates, but instead the opposition stuck their best red

haired player into goals for the 2nd half. We continued to dominate with shot after shot, but

nothing was going to go past this little red haired boy in goal. He was magnificent in defending his

goals. One bullet from Zac was brilliantly saved by him.

We walk away with the victory, but will face them again next weekend on our home turf were we

last won 5-2. The kids know they will need to be up for it, but back to our home goals I am

confident we will nudge the Lions White again. Special mention to Zac this week for his defensive

sweeping efforts.

Go the GreenThe Rambler

Cygnet U8 Green 1 def Kingborough Lions Gold/White 0 (Ethan H 1)

Cygnet U/8 White

I was expecting a tough encounter as our last match with Margate Red was a 2 nil win and

this time around we were missing the firepower of Otis’s big boot from the corners and in

general play.

The opening stanza saw the Sea Dragons dominate and we were continually thwarted by agame effort by the Margate keeper. The second stanza was a more even affair with neither

side in the ascendancy – and neither side having any goal scoring opportunities.

Special mention must be made of the defensive trio of Jack, Toby and especially Sofia who

were able to thwart the attack– often at crucial times.

One aspect we need to work upon is when one of our attacking players make a break.

If the break is up either of the wings we need other players to provide support and some

options in the centre of the pitch and in the box. In this match many breaks were made but

our attacker was then isolated with no one to pass to and as a result was dispossessed.

score as there are only 4 players. Now that we are on the bigger pitch and playing 7 a sidethere is very little likelihood of a player scoring an individual goal – hence the need to trap

the ball, look up, pass, move forward, get into position, call out, and be ready to take the ball

again.

Well done kids.

The Sideline Scribe

Cygnet U8 White 0 drew Margate Red 0

Cygnet U/9 Green

The U9 Green played a well matched game against St Vigils, managing to keep just on top

of them the whole match. St Virgil’s got the start against them with a great lob from about

half way right over everyone’s heads and into the net. The Greens soon replied though with a

shot from Oscar L ricocheting off the goalie onto an opposition player and into the goal! One

all.

Tim ran in a fantastic goal from half way, skirting round a few defenders and finishing it off in

style. Cobi put in his usual top performance in goal in the first half exchanging gloves with

Oscar O who saved a couple of good un’s too. Oscar L thought he scored a third goal with a

shot that just missed the inside of the post, hit the goalie’s foot and went in. However, the

dumb ref succumbed to protests from the opposition that the ball actually went round the

outside of the post. Without instant replay, we will never know but, as I said to Oscar, if it

wasn’t a goal, they will have to live with the fact that they cheated and still couldn’t win! In

contrast to the opposition’s protests I was proud to see the Sea Dragons not flinching whenthe goal was denied and later owning up to touching the ball when I called a goal kick

instead of a corner (thank you Denzel). Great sportsmanship Dragons.

Cobi scored the final goal (which I missed completely in a haze of trying to work out who to

sub next, but I am sure it was brilliant). Great teamwork from the whole team - who Ric

ensured moved around a lot between positions. Great to see the skills and thinking

developing nicely.

A good game and a nice win.

South Hobart Primary pitch had been turned 90 degrees to avoid the worst of the mud bath

but it was still a quagmire with some correspondingly confusing line markings and a shorter

pitch to boot. We knew this was a tough team as we had lost 6-1 last time we met and were

looking forward to a rematch going more our way.

Rory took on goalie in the first half and did a great job to save all the kicks at goal bar the first

in the first minute. Toby and Saras did a great job in supporting Rory in defence. Romi, Nedand Elliot tried valiantly to get the ball to the goals on numerous occasions but it seemed to

slow down in the mud before being scooped up by the keeper. Codi and Riley did a superb

job of covering the whole field and worked well together with some great team work.

Half time oranges with a score of only 1-0 against us.

Riley asked to be goalie in the second half. I admit that the only other time Riley had taken his

turn at being goalie I had deliberately put him in a game when I knew there wouldn't be

much defensive action as we hadn't done much practice with Riley in this position, so it waswith some reservation that I agreed Riley should take the goalie position today. But boy did

he earn his place with some magnificent saves and dives at goal. Only one unlucky miss

allowed South Hobart to end up with a 2-0 win. Again some great support from Elliot and

Toby with some terrific game play and clearing kicks to keep the ball away from the goal.

Lots more shots at goal but just not enough power and accuracy to beat the mud and the

good goalie keeping by South Hobart.

This was a real team effort with good communication and team work amongst the attack

and the defence. Well done team.

Cygnet U9 White 0 lost to South Hobart Primary 2

U/10 Green

The U10 Green-but-not-so-keen Machine fired on 3 cylinders on Saturday and like all good

teams, we were about due for one. Acute attacks of lethargy ran rampant across the field

attacking even those players choosing to watch the U9 game playing on the next field. A

lesson learnt that in first division, if you don't play for 50 minutes, teams will take thatopportunity and take the match from us. Not one of our best efforts but some signs of brilliant

passing.

U12 Sea Dragons

I was expecting a good performance today and the team didn't let me down. A fantastic

game, where we kept the ball and played solid football and had numerous chances to take

the lead. It was no surprise when we went in at half time two goals to the good thanks to

Seth and Ewan. I think in the entire first half we worked so hard all over the pitch we kept St.

Virgil's out of the game and their striker's only managed one shot on goal. Great team effort

from the Green's.

Half time : Cygnet 2 - 0 St. Virgil's Blue

Much of the same in the second half, we dominated the match with every single player in

Green putting in a good solid shift. Seth added another goal, to make it three but in honesty

we could have scored another six or seven in the second half. Again, we limited the

opposition to long range shots and a few corners and our defence managed the threat. Our

focus and concentration throughout the team was better and although we could still

communicate more..? As the coach, I could not be happier, we ran out worthy winners at

the final whistle and as a bonus it's always good to keep a clean sheet.

Full time : Cygnet 3 - 0 St. Virgil's Blue

In summary, it was an excellent game today, the best we have played so far this season.

Everybody ran and covered each other and did their jobs and kept in position. Because of

this, we dominated the match and didn't really allow St. Virgil's to get into or find their game.

We can do some shooting and finishing training this week, now we are keeping clean sheets

again. But, If we play like this in our next game (and hopefully we maintain this form to theend of the season) we shouldn't lose anymore games and we'll be a handful for any team to

come up against. So let's all enjoy the last run of games ahead of us and play like we know

we can.

We all deserve to get some more positive results on the board. All eleven of you should be

proud of how you have turned your fortunes around from a tough start to the season.

Well done everybody..!!!

Cygnet Sea-Dragon Victory Song

Chorus:

Green is the Colour

Football is the Game

We’re all together  And winning is our aim

 So cheer us on

Through the sun and the rain

For Cygnet, Cygnet is our name

Verse 1:

Here by the Huon whether rain or fine

We can shine

 All the time

Home or away

Come and see us play

You’re welcome any day.

Repeat Chorus

To Finish:

What do we eat?

 Seaweed

How do we eat it?

Raw
