Drawing Cylinders

Here are some common mistakes to avoid when drawing cylinders:

1. Outer edges too pointed

2. Front and back edges too flat

3. Ellipse too full

4. Top ellipse and bottom ellipses should not match. Ellipses flatten close to eye level.

The shape of the ellipses (circles in perspective) change as they change position in according to the eye level.

DRAWING A CYLINDER THAT IS UP RIGHT USING ONE-POINT

Draw your box for your cylinder in the same proportions as your cylinder and from the correct position to the eye level.

Draw the ellipses at the top and bottom.

Draw the sides of your shape.

DRAWING A TWO-POINT CYLINDER

Drawing a cylinder shape on its side requires using two-point perspective. You draw a two-point box in which you draw your cylinder. You have to establish the eye level and correct proportions as you did in the one-point cylinder drawing.
