Chord Tone Exercise (L#46)

Your Action Plan

1. Knowing your chord tones over the entire

fingerboard will be the foundation of your bass

playing. Admittedly, I sound like a broken record

sometimes discussing the importance of knowing

the chord tones over the entire neck. But, in my

defense, I can't put into words how a good

knowledge and good visualization of the chords

tones on the fingerboard will completely transform

your playing. You will start to 'see' the music on the

fingerboard almost like someone revealing the

answer to a puzzle you've been trying to figure out

for years.

Work through the exercise in the video tutorial, but

start off by limiting yourself to one position on the

neck. For instance this could be within the first five

frets. Once you can complete the exercises within

that position simply move up to another position.

Then, repeat this process until you can cover the

entire fingerboard.

2. When you complete the exercises over the entire

fingerboard you should then repeat the same

exercises but using a different jazz standard. In case

you're wondering why I use jazz standards for these

exercises, it's simply because they tend to be built

from fantastic chord progressions that have plenty

of harmonic movement and use many of the

Different chord types whereas pop and rock songs don't lend themselves well to these types of exercises.

3. Here's a list of jazz standards you could try:

Autumn Leaves All The Things You Are The Days Of Wine And Roses Night And Day All of You The Lady Is A Tramp

You should take one jazz standard and work on it for an extended period of time. I recommend at least a week. I have actually worked on one standard on and off for over a year if not longer.

One thing I really want you to do is learn whichever standard you're working on, in depth. I mean serious depth. Learn the chord sequence by heart. Learn the melody. Even listen to the lyrics and sing the song. Don't worry; you don't have to sing it in public! This is simply a learning process and you'll feel the difference when you do it. Trust me and try it out!
