Student Housing at Darton. A Dream Whose Time Has Come. arton College has consistently been at the forefront of University System two- year colleges since its establishment in 1963. Today it stands as a shining example of what can be accomplished with strong leadership, outstanding faculty, thoughtful financial steward- ship, extraordinary vision, community support, and plain hard work. With a record 5,019 students from 28 states and 44 countries enrolled this fall, Darton College is the second largest two-year college in Georgia. Over 500 of the out-of-area students presently rent housing in the Albany area. The fact is, since 2000 enrollment has increased by 78 percent, and an even greater increase is projected for the next 10 years. Opening Doors. Each year it becomes more difficult to find suitable housing for our ever- expanding student body. The need for on-campus residential living is clear. goal is to offer 208 beds – which will translate into a $2,500,000 annual impact on our area economy. Our long-range goal is to add an additional 400 beds, thereby creating a $7,500,000 annual impact. Any way you look at it student housing is a win- win proposition for Darton and the region. But we can’t do it without you. Opening Minds. Historically, Darton College has sought to provide a “total college experience” for its students, but it has been impossible to fully realize as a commuter college. Yet the College has made significant progress already, as indicated by its strong programs and successful graduates. Darton offers 87 degree programs, 51 certificate programs and 26 online degrees. Our facilities and programs in information technologies recently were ranked second in the nation among two-year colleges. Our intercollegiate athletic program has been recognized as the strongest NJCAA athletic program in Georgia. Computer programs and technologies at Darton are ranked second nationally among two-year colleges. Darton's allied health and nursing programs provide southwest Georgia with most of its health professionals – including more than 70 percent of all registered nurses, medical lab technolo- gists, paramedics, and dental hygienists in Dougherty and Lee Counties – and 38 percent of the health professionals in the 32-county catchment area. We are extremely proud that Darton graduates sitting for the state nursing examinations and other health science licensure board exams have one of the highest pass-rates in Georgia. Transforming the Landscape. To date, the Darton College Foundation has raised more than $1,000,000 and purchased a 44-acre site adjoining the campus. However – and whatever – you choose to give, please know that your support is valued and your donation will be invested wisely. Road and the Housing committee has begun site improvements including water and sewer connections. The land is cleared and stands ready for the realization of this long-awaited dream. Four apartment options will be offered. The primary difference between the options relates to the square footage. Regardless of whether students choose to live alone or with a suitemate, all suites will include a kitchenette, a living room and a private bedroom and bath for each student. Handicapped units will also be available. The public areas will include a spacious common area, a full kitchen, a quiet room, a fitness center, and laundry facilities. Naming Opportunities. Darton College is honored to recog- nize individuals who make significant contributions to the Foundation. Your name or the name of a loved one will be forever interwoven into the fabric of Darton College. Residential living enhances the college experience, and studies show a strong correlation between on-campus living and academic success. A significant by-product of student housing owned by the Darton College Foundation will be a continuous stream of revenue that can help fund scholarships, and faculty and staff development later on. It is important to note that the Board of Regents has a policy that prohibits the University System of Georgia from using state funds to build student housing.
