Kent Lent PieIngredients175g wholemeal fl our 50g sugarPinch of salt 2 eggs150g butter Finely grated rind of 1 lemon300ml fresh milk 1.25 ml ground nutmeg25g ground rice 25g currants

Method1. Put the fl our and salt in a bowl and rub in 75g of the butter (not all of

it!) until the mixture resembles fi ne breadcrumbs. Stir in 45 - 60 ml cold water to bind the mixture together into a dough.

2. Roll out the pastry on a lightly fl oured surface and use it to line a greased 20.5 cm fl uted fl an dish or tin. Bake blind at 200OC / gas 6 for 10 -15 minutes, until set.

3. Meanwhile, put the milk and rice in a pan and bring to the boil, stirring continuously, until the mixture thickens. Remove the pan from the heat and leave to cool.

4. When the mixture is cold, cream the remaining butter and sugar to-gether until pale and fl uffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then add the lemon rind, salt, nutmeg and the rice mixture. Mix thoroughly together and pour into the fl an case. Sprinkle the currants on the top.

5. Bake at 190OC / gas 5 for 40 - 45 minutes until fi rm to the touch and golden brown. Serve the pie warm.

Naming of The HolliesThe street names on The Hollies are a mixture of old place names and the names of people with a strong connection the Harrietsham.

Boxfi eld Close } These three roads are namedParkfi eld Close } after the adjacent fi eld names,Shrubwood Close } as shown on the Tithe Maps.

Alexander RoadThis was named after Syd Alexander, a Parish Councillor for 8 years who worked on the environmental projects of Woodlands Walk and New Burial Ground and former Chairman of Harrietsham in Bloom. There is a tree dedicated to Syd on the West Street Green opposite the shop.

Horwood WayThis was named after the Horwood family who used to own the fi eld on which The Hollies is built. It was part of what was then Parkwood Farm and used for growing strawberries. Parkwood House, off West Street, was the farmhouse.

Butler Close This was named after William (Bill) Butler who worked for many village organisations raising much money for village good causes, e.g. the village Millennium Project and the Heart of Kent Hospice (the Bluebell Walks, Bill’s Quiz and Bill’s Safari Suppers). He was the founder of Harrietsham in Bloom, and is also commemorated in Bill’s Round for Charity (golf) which is still held regularly.

Blackthorn WalkThis is named after the blackthorn bushes that were numerous on the site.

The HolliesThis name is an invention of the developers - the site is not known for holly!

From the EditorThe ‘Welcome to Harrietsham’ event in February proved successful and a number of residents on ‘The Hollies’ estate plus other newcomers to the village met representatives from a number of local clubs, so it seems timely to explain the meanings of the street names there - hence the front cover and the article on p. 48. Personally I’d like to know more about the names of some of the other streets in Harrietsham, so if anyone can enlighten me I’d be delighted!

I’m always pleased to receive reports of events that have been publicised in Network so it was very satisfying to receive not one, but two accounts of the Leeds pantomime: one from a reporter well known to you, the other from a slightly younger reporter whom I hope will become well known to you all! On that subject, if there are any other youngsters out there who’d like to write a few lines for Network occasionally - please do get in touch.

At the end of the month there is a weekend with surely something for every-one: a ‘Rat Pack’ tribute evening, an antiques valuation day, a ferret show, a car boot sale and another Vintage and Makers’ Fayre.

As the fi rst signs of spring appear there are also a few events to termpt you outside: a 10k road race for the Heart of Kent Hospice, a ‘Scrub Bash’ to clear Teers Field, and a new jogging and fi tness group in the village - details of all these and more in the magazine.

And I’d like to draw your attention to the notice below; the Fish Scheme has two main activities: the ‘Helping Hands’ Scheme (which mainly provides lifts to medical appointments etc) and the Network magazine, so if you would like to fi nd out more about either of these, without any obligation, please do come along and meet us on the 18th. We don’t bite!

Short Mat Bowls Club16th January and a trip to Marden on a chilly evening for our fi rst friendly game of the New Year. Our usual enjoyable evening again with old friends. The resulting games were very close and we lost by 43-44 points.

On Monday 19th it was a visit to Phoenix in Maidstone - we did not play well that evening and again lost by 43-48 points. Were we downhearted? No, we came away with a good percentage of the raffl e and looking forward to their visit later in the month.

Phoenix returned to us on 29th January - a cold evening but the bowling was hot! We managed to do better this time and won by 63-41 points. This venue/time the other year saw 3” of snow on the ground when they went home - but not this time.

No more in January but we play Lenham twice in February and are looking forward to our friendly rivalry. More next month,

Rusty

Harrietsham Wives GroupWe had an excellent attendance at the February meeting for our Auction and once again an amazing amount of money was raised with a new record set: £207.50! The total has increased gradually over the last few years. We must also again thank our auctioneer, Jackie Bevan, for her efforts in encouraging the bidders. We welcome our fi rst speaker of the year at our next meeting in March. The subject is ‘Haunted Pluckley’ so brave the spirits and come along to the Booth Hall on Wednesday, 4th March at 8.00 pm.

Any enquiries to our secretary Rosi Taylor (851701) or myself.Barbara Kelly (853803)

Len Valley Hub ClubOur meeting for March is on Thursday 5th at Lenham Social Club from 2.00 till 4.00pm. We have Guide Dogs for the Blind coming and they are bringing their dog with them. Look forward to that.

Borough Councillor’s ReportIt has been an interesting month many residents have been in contact with me on a wide and varied subjects. I have spent a number of evenings at the town hall regarding planning issues and also many hours visiting and speaking to residents within the village. I have continued to work with the residents regarding the Sandway Motorcross. An Article 4 has been put in place by MBC; the legislation requires that there is a period for review and is therefore set up on the basis that the Article 4 needs to be confi rmed within the 6 month time frame – there is no alternative to this. The 28 day period allows for comments to be received on the direction, both from residents and from the landowner on which the direction is placed. Following a review of this correspondence, the Council will then consider whether to confi rm the order. This all follows the procedures laid down in the Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (Amendment) (England) Order 2010. I have reported pot holes and street lights through the KCC website which seems to be successful and relatively easy to use. Any resident is able to access this, the website is http://www.kent.gov.uk/roads-and-travel/report-a-problem Housing is still a problem for many and I am working with the Parish Council to update the housing survey to guarantee some Local Needs Housing within the new developments.

Harrietsham Gardening SocietyOur February meeting took place after the editorial deadline so I will report on this next month. In January we held our AGM and I am pleased to confi rm all of the existing offi cers and members of the committee apart from Brenda Davis were happy to continue and were re-elected. We are sorry to lose Brenda from the committee as she had been a very willing helper since the society formed nearly twelve years ago; she was presented with a planted up garden hedgehog planter. The vacancy on the committee was fi lled by Angela Gatland who is also on the Annual show committee; she was warmly welcomed by the chairman. Members received details of the programme for the rest of the year including the monthly competitions.

Our meeting on Tuesday 17th March is our members-only Spring show; the schedule for entries can be found and downloaded from our website – harrietshamgardeningsociety.org - or obtained from any member of the committee; there is no competition at the March meeting.

The yearly membership of the society is still only £10.00 and details of how to join can also be found on our website together with our programme which this year includes trips to Wakehurst Place, the RHS gardens at Hyde Hall and a 4-night trip to the Isle of Wight. Details can also be found on our noticeboard inside the village hall.

On our website we have now added some useful links to other societies and suppliers, these can be found by clicking on the ‘Links’ tab on the left hand side of the home page.

Gardening Tips for MarchSpring seems to be here with the daffodils shooting up and snowdrop bulbs and cyclamen corms all now in full fl ower. Frosts can still be a hazard so keep protecting vulnerable plants during cold spells. Now is the time to mark out those new beds, prepare the ground by removing the weeds and incorporate organic matter, and off to the garden centre to pick out some new plants. Remember when looking around at the garden centre to pick out plants that will give you a succession of interest and don’t just pick out all the fl owering plants. You can mulch the beds with bark to save watering next summer and cut down on the weeding.

In the vegetable garden many vegetable crops can be sown this month: broad beans, carrots, lettuces, spinach, salad leaves, leeks and chard - fresh home grown food all summer. With the lawn it is time to neaten the

Reseed any bare areas in the lawn and when the weather is a little drier carry out a light roll to set-tle the surface. Towards the end of the month you can apply a weed and feed to the grass areas. Please note to all those people that use Verdone to treat the weeds in the lawn that it has changed its name to Weedol for Lawns. To add to further confusion, Weedol for Lawns is different to Weedol Weedkiller for beds and borders. You have been warned, read the label very carefully!

Parish CouncilWest Street StreamThank you to Barrie and Barbara Incledon and Audrey Joy who, for 2 hours, braved the wind and bitter cold on the 6th February to help clear the West Street stream of bottles, cans, carpet, kick plates, logs, branches and vegetation etc

Your efforts are very gratefully received and the stream looks great. Thanks!

Planning Application Approved – Land South of Ashford RoadMany of you will know this area as the CTRL site (next to Bam Nuttall) and, at the Planning Committee meeting in February, Borough Councillors approved the application. This development will include additional allot-ments which will help to reduce the ever-growing waiting list, provide a retail element and also help to create the ‘village heart’ which was instigated by the Neighbourhood Plan. There will be additional green space for the community, improvements to the Village Green at West Street and a contribution towards the A20 improvement scheme.

Elections 2015As residents will be aware, the general election takes place on 7th May and the elections for the Parish Council will also be held on the same day. If you are interested in becoming a Councillor, please forward your details to the Clerk and these will be held on fi le until the nomination forms are for-warded by Maidstone Borough Council. The Clerk will then be able to send out the relevant paperwork that will need to be completed. Please register your interest by either sending an email to [email protected] or by post to 16 Merivale Grove, Walderslade, Chatham Kent ME5 8HP.

The deadline for registering to vote in this year’s general election is the 20th April. You can register on-line through the government’s ‘gov.uk’ portal, by post (downloading the relevant forms from the portal) or you can contact the electoral Registrations Offi cer at Maidstone Borough Council on 01622 602000.

Harrietsham History SocietyThe speaker at the meeting on Monday 19th January, Graham Stark, gave a very interesting talk and Power Point presentation on Canterbury Cathedral, this was very well received by the 24 members and 4 guests present. Graham is a part-time guide at the Cathedral and there was a lot of interest in following up his talk with a visit in the near future.

The society continue to have items donated and are desperately in need of some help in sorting and cataloguing these so if there is anyone who would be interested in helping this would be very much appreciated.

Members of the War Committee had a meeting at the War Memorial with a local approved stonemason on Saturday 24th January and anticipate hav-ing a detailed quotation for the cleaning, repair and restoration works and the prices for obtaining and fi tting new plaques by the time you read this article. This will enable us to submit applications for grants from the War Graves Trust and establish what money we will need to raise to enable the works to be carried out. I am very pleased to note that the Wives Group have kindly nominated the War Memorial fund as one of their benefi ciaries this year and thank them for their support.

Tickets are now available for our next fund raising event for the War Memorial works which is the ‘Rat Pack Tribute Night’ at the Village Hall on Friday 27th March, these can be obtained from Jill on 07770 407127, Susie on 07812 555585 or from the history society. See opposite page.

Our next meeting will be on Monday 16th March when our speaker Sheila Boyd will be giving a talk ‘Queen Victoria’s Dreadful Uncles’. Information on all of the history society’s meetings can be found on our website:harrietshamhistorysociety.org.

Pins and NeedlesI said last month that what would be even better than one new member would be two new members and guess what, two new people turned up at our meeting in February! - I do hope they both enjoyed the afternoon enough to return.

The next crafting afternoon will be on Tuesday 3rd March between 2pm and 5pm (come and go any time within that band) at 3 Downlands. New-comers welcome, give me a call beforehand so I know to expect you.

French DayPupils and staff at Harrietsham C. of E. Primary School wore the red, white and blue of the Tricolor as part of French Day on 23rd January. Children began the day by answering the register in French before enjoying a break-fast of croissants, brioche and hot chocolate. All year groups then had the opportunity to learn phrases and vocabulary from greetings and days of the week to playing ‘What’s the Time Mr. Wolf?’. In the afternoon Key Stage 1 made fantastic models of the Eiffel Tower, painted fl ags and learnt a French song to perform in assembly.

Older children studied the works of famous painters from Seurat to Cezanne and produced some vibrant paintings in the style of the artists. Children listened to works by French composers and did some internet research on the geography of France.

Everyone learnt something new and had a thoroughly enjoyable day. Vive la France!

MAOS (Maidstone Amateur Operatic Society)Rehearsals are in full swing for our 2015 production of ‘42nd Street’ – a popular and lively musical with many well known songs and spectacular dance sequences.

The show is set in 1930’s New York, where we meet a young dancer from Pennsylvania trying to get into a Broadway show. You will hear some well-known songs like ‘We’re in the money’, ‘Lullaby of Broadway’ and the title song ‘Forty Second Street’, and you may not be able to resist ‘tapping’ along with the dancing! The show features David Frazer from Harrietsham in the role of Andy, the Dance Director for the Broadway show Pretty Lady, and Andrew Robinson from Lenham as Mac, the Stage Manager for Pretty Lady.

Our reputation for highly professional productions will be continued with this year’s show which will run for 7 performances from 23rd to 28th March 2015 at the Hazlitt Theatre.

MAOS is a totally self supporting group and has been performing high quality shows in Maidstone for 115 years now with a loyal following in the greater Maidstone area for both shows and concerts.

Christian MessageI was watching a father encouraging his young son to go off on his bicycle without the stabilisers. It took me back to when youngest son, Paul, was at that same stage. I suppose I remember it because it was something that took Paul some time to master. But eventually, with much cajoling and encouragement, he cracked it. It was hard for him, but my husband and I were there, because the only way we could persuade him to have a go at fi rst was to promise to be there alongside him, always there to support him should he lose his balance or start to wobble. And I like to think that Paul knows we are still there for him now, even as he now approaches his 30th birthday, and we will always be there for him.

We all need a little support sometimes, don’t we? Someone to hold on to us when the going gets tough, when we’re unsure of our ground, when our confi dence fades or fails and we feel ourselves slipping. The message of scripture is that we all have that support in God. Right across all ages he has reiterated his promise to support us along the journey of life, to stay close by our side so that, in times of crisis, we can rely on him to be there alongside us. There were times, I remember, when Paul wanted to give up with his bicycle, and there will be times when we feel like that too. But just as my husband and I being there for him gave the reassurance needed for Paul to fi nally succeed, so the knowledge of God’s constant presence will give us the confi dence we need when we need it.

And so, are you facing a challenge which you are questioning your ability to get through? Have you the faith to trust that God will be there to hold you?My experience is that God has given me constant guidance throughout my life, he has assured me that he is always there to encourage, strengthen and support me. He has given me strength in times of weakness, he has given me encouragement in times of fear, he has given me support in times of diffi culty and I rejoice that he has given me faith in times of doubt. And so I pray that when you are fi nding life is hard and maybe the days are dark, that you will have that same faith to trust in the future, confi dent that whatever may be asked of you, you will know God surrounds you with his loving care, holding you close.

YogaWeekly Yoga class in Harrietsham Village Hall, Mondays 9.30amYOGA – an ancient practice that enhances and balances the mind and body. Yoga is needed now more than before as we become more sed-entary, muscles shorten and our energy levels are reduced. Yoga is the antidote to the modern world, relieving you from stress and the perception of having to be ‘busy doing’.

Physically, Yoga postures allow the muscles to lengthen giving more free-dom of movement in the joints and developing strength which in turn gives a feeling of well-being and a more positive outlook on life. Yoga practice encourages mindfulness to restore the balance of mental activity helping to focus effectively.

Yoga also encourages deeper breath control which enhances the energy levels bringing more vitality. Breath control helps to manage stressful situations and emotional responses.

If Monday mornings don’t fi t in with your routine The British Wheel of Yoga web site can direct you to a class convenient for you: www.bwy.org.uk or contact me for more information on 01622 850381.

March 2015Women’s World Day of Prayer(International and Interdenominational)

Friday 6th March 2015 St. Mary’s, Lenham 10.30amAll Saints Church, Ulcombe 7pm

Jesus said to them: Do you know what I have done to you?

Women’s World Day of Prayer is an international, inter-church organisation which enables us to hear the voices of women from a different part of the world each year, expressing their hopes and concerns and bringing them before the world in prayer.

On Friday 6th March an estimated 3 million people in over 170 countries will gather to observe the day of prayer, using an order of service written by Christian women from The Bahamas and translated into over 1000 different languages and dialects. In the British Isles alone over 5000 services will be held. The day will begin when the sun rises over the island of Samoa, and continue until it sets off the coast of American Samoa some 35 hours later.

The theme of the service is taken from St John’s Gospel, chapter 13, verses 1-17, ‘Jesus said to them: “Do you know what I have done to you?’ and it challenges us to demonstrate the same radical, unconditional love for others that Jesus showed when he washed the feet of his disciples.

The Bahamas consists of over 700 islands, scattered over 100,000 square miles in the Atlantic Ocean, only a small proportion of which are inhabited. It refers to itself as a ‘family of islands’.

Everyone is welcome to attend the service, men, women - people of all ages. We look forward to welcoming you on Friday, 6th March, 10.30am at St Mary’s Church, Lenham and 7pm at All Saints Church, Ulcombe.

Harrietsham NetworkLettersEntertainment at Chippendayle LodgeI feel I must share with you a really lovely afternoon’s entertainment held at Chippendayle Lodge, arranged by Anne (one of our night Carers).

It took on the theme of ‘Old Tyme Music Hall’.

Two gentlemen, one of them sport-ing a magnifi cent white beard and full of fun, and his partner, who as well as playing the piano had a wonderful Paul Robeson voice, had travelled down from Brick Lane, London.

It was a wonderful afternoon - please come again SOON!

Vera Freed, Resident

Dot SamsCan we thank everyone who has been contacting us about Mum over the months of us looking after her.

We have been fortunate to have been able to place her at Hillbeck residential home, Bearsted, which specialises in dementia care. Unfor-tunately dementia is extremely cruel and it robs the individual slowly and without mercy of the mind’s ability to function. We have been fortunate to have received the love of our family through this diffi cult time and also friends within our community. The messages from her friends from the community including Hub Group and the Young at Heart Club have been precious to all of us. Particu-larly we want to thank Les and Nelly who have been phenomenal in their support through those months at the Remix Club and gave Mum so much pleasure with their singing.

Next month we would like to briefl y write a few lines about the organi-sations who helped us with Mum’s vascular dementia so it might assist others. Thank you, everyone.

Jogging and FitnessIf you want to get fi t for free, why not join the new Harrietsham jogging and fi tness group? This group is for everyone no matter what your jogging abil-ity. We currently jog every other day and it’s a great way to get fi t and run socially. As the nicer weather comes in we will also look to do some circuit work on the fi elds. The group is for everyone but children must be with an adult (10+ please).

Feel free to contact me on 07530 585588 or email [email protected] for information or join the Facebook group by searching Facebook for “Harrietsham jogging and fi tness”.

Probably not a running group for super athletes but a great informal way to run and get fi t with others. We look forward to hearing from you.

‘Welcome to Harrietsham’ EventThe hall at the primary school was a-buzz on the afternoon of 7th February when over 30 organisations ‘set up shop’ to show what they are and what they do and many people recently (and not so recently) arrived in the village came to investigate. This was networking at its best and the links made on the day are only the start!

Thanks to everyone who came along, either with a stall or as a guest. Par-ticular thanks to:• the school, for the use of the facilities• everyone who provided or served the refreshments• Stephen Morris , for the loan of crockery, etc• Mrs. Holland and the wonderful school choir (surely the highlight of the

afternoon!)• Roger, for chairing the afternoon, and of course to Lynne and Marjorie

for the huge amount of work they did to stage the event at all.

Welcome to HarrietshamA very warm welcome to the following who have recently moved to Harrietsham:• Janice and Christopher White with Nicola (24 Horwood Way)• June and George Jones (25 Horwood Way}• Sandra Trent (27 Horwood Way) • Pauline and Peter Green (34 Horwood Way)• Emma and Michael Phillips with George and Lacie (4 Boxfi eld Close)• Rowan and Nicola Patterson (Colesdane)

An equally warm welcome to anyone we’ve not yet managed to meet or who chooses not to be listed here. We hope you settle quickly and are very happy here.

A good night out, oh yes it was…It must have been February because it was time, once again, for the Leeds Village Pantomime.

This year the production was the Emperor’s New Clothes. The story was different but the characters were strangely familiar with a leading man played by a girl, a pantomime dame played by a boy and the continuity held together by none other than our very own Carole Burton from Harrietsham, and her accomplice, Charlotte Manning.

The cast worked hard and adults and children alike entertained us all with good humour, bright costumes and several changes of scenery whilst ‘Pantoland Strictly Come XFactor’ kept us amused and impressed. The beautiful princess sang, the charming prince wooed her, Itch and Stitch made us laugh as ineffi cient rogues, the emperor danced in his ‘unmention-ables’ and the fairy God-mother saw off the evil duchess amid much booing and hissing. But who stole the show for me? Young Hercules in his smart waist-coat and the glamorous assistant, alias Otis and Celestina Meneses-Bautista: both delightful and obviously being allowed to stay up very late for our benefi t. Indeed, thank you to all the cast and crew for another enjoy-able production this year. I’m already looking forward to next year’s show.In the meantime, it will be fun when I next bump into the emperor, being effi cient and professional, in a very different role!

Pamela Cuerden

* * * * *The Emperor’s New Clothes by LADS at Leeds Village Hall

On Saturday [7th February] I went to see The Emperor’s New Clothes. It was really funny because I liked booing the baddies and cheering the good-ies. I was good at booing compared to some of the adults! I loved the way the Emperor dressed in his white t-shirt and red shorts, his dancing skills needed some work but made everyone laugh. I liked going up on the stage and taking part. If they do a pantomime next year I will be going as it was a great afternoon. It was a really great performance.

HARRIETSHAM TIMES News from March 1915

The Late

Rev. C.D.B. Marsham

He bore his last illness with the greatest fortitude and patience. He was able to receive the last Sacrament with his family with the exception of Capt. F. Marsham, now at the front. He passed away at 6 o’clock on Tuesday morning, 2nd March, and was laid to rest on the following Saturday under the shadow of the Church he loved so well.

The funeral was very largely attended, both by his own friends and by the parishioners among whom he had worked for so many years. There was a full choir, and A. Tong jun. presided at the organ as Mr. F. Crossley had been detained in camp. The grave was lined with moss, ivy and snowdrops by Mr. T. Brandrick. The deepest sympathy from the entire Parish

News from the Front

News from March 1915

The Late

Rev. C.D.B. Marsham A great sorrow has fallen upon the Parish since our last issue, which it seems indeed hard to write about. Our beloved Rector, who had been seriously ill for many weeks, has passed away, mourned by us all, honoured and loved by all who knew him.

For twenty-seven years he had laboured in the Parish, winning the esteem and affection of those whom he ministered. The good of the Parish was always his first consideration, and never was there anyone in suffering, in need, or in mourning, but they experienced his ready sympathy, his willing help, or his kindly words of advice. He always took the greatest interest in the schools and young people of the Parish, We have all indeed lost a dear friend, whose presence among us will be sorely missed.

goes out to Mrs. Marsham, and to his sons and daughters who mourn his loss.

The V.A.D. Hospital Hayle Place – Maidstone

If any readers are kindly disposed to help this hospital by any gifts they will be gratefully accepted and taken to the hospital on Thursday in each week. The Game season being over and vegetables very scarce, any offerings such as Butter, Eggs, Chickens, Fowls, Tea, Cocoa, Sugar, Jam, etc. will be especially acceptable. There have been 40 to 60 Patients at the Hospital during the last weeks.

Rusty
