Division 12 East August Newsletter: August Newsletter 1 1
KEY CLUB I CNH I REGION 17
Division 12 East
LTG'S MESSAGE Hey everyone! I hope you all had a blast at OTC. If you missed
OTC, don't worry! You can go to RTC. You can find out more
information on this in the RTC Information page later in the newsletter (page 6). If you missed RTC, FRN is coming up!
Remember that in preparation for FRN, you all should start
fundraising for PTP! If your club has already fundraised money
for PTP, please be sure to let me know, so that the money
can be accurately accounted for! If you have cash, please let me know so I can give it to one of our Region Advisors for
safekeeping (students should not be handling money), and if
you have a check, remember to make it out to CNH Key Club!
Every month, I will post a challenge that I would like for you all
to complete. You can post it on the division facebook page or
your home club page... maybe email it to me or someone else- whatever floats your boat! This is not mandatory, but it
would be awesome if you could all do it!
CHALLENGE: What has been your greatest Key Club
achievement? Are there still goals that you are striving to
reach? If so, what are they and how do you plan on reaching
them?
Vanessa Yeh,
2012-2013 D12E Lieutenant Governor

CLUB UPDATES
Basking in the warm sun. Bracing yourself for the heat. Baking yourself to a nice,
golden brown…or trying hard to remain light. Basically doing whatever you want to do.
Just like that, we hope everyone has been enjoying their summer! We at American
present to you a golden opportunity to have fun with friends and serve your community at the same time, with Relay For Life!
What is Relay For Life? Those of you who have attended the last DCM may remember
two special guest speakers talking to us about the relay, its purpose and origins. To
recap, Relay For Life is a subunit of the American Cancer Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fundraising money for cancer research and education. At
the relay (which is not really a marathon or anything like that), people will continue to walk the track for 24 hours to symbolize that, because cancer never stops for anyone,
we will not stop fighting it either.
Right now, American is planning to partner up with Irvington to make a team to attend the upcoming Newark Relay For Life, on August 11th to 12th. They need volunteers to
come and help them set up, clean up, and do other miscellaneous tasks on campus!
So if you decide to go right now, you’ll be saving two birds with one arrow-of-life by showing off your benevolent Key Club spirit and helping fight cancer! If you would like
to join our team or receive more information about it, please contact Stanley Han (American’s president) at [email protected], Vivian Nguyen (Irvington’s
president), or Agnes Chung (American’s bulletin editor) at [email protected].
Key Club + Relay For Life = Together, let’s K.O. cancer out of this world!
June was a busy yet very successful month for Independence High School's Key Club! We started off the month with American High School's Gala Night, where we bonded over
entertainment, food, and Key Club spirit! The executive officers held a board training conference to train our board members and to educate them about the history, goals, and roles of Key Club.
We participated in Election Night, where 20 volunteers helped our club raise $1,000!! With the club president off to Nicaragua for service, education, and adventure shortly after, the 4 other
executive officers put their leadership skills together to organize the Basket Boy Scavenger Hunt
event/fundraiser which allowed our club to raise $200. Although it was very hot, the event was successful, unique, and fun! CMF (Chinese Moon Festival) craft days also started, and many of
our Key Clubbers devoted their Friday and Saturday afternoons to help make creative crafts for kids. Our project directors showed their passion for service and led many events this month for
our members!
Our June 23 car wash was a huge success, with over $700 earned! June was a great month for us because we earned $1,935 and had over 700 service hours from our dedicated members!
Although our treasurer will be leaving to Nicaragua just after our president travels back to San Jose, Independence High School's Key Club will continue to amaze everyone as July comes
around the corner!!

On Saturday, June 23rd, our club volunteered at Festival in the Park on Hellyer
Avenue in San Jose. Our officers and members worked to set up and tear down
exhibits, help with visitor and exhibitor registration and hospitality, and clean up
the park afterwards. Some of our key clubbers also became amusement ride
attendants and rest area and shuttle station attendants as well. It was an
extremely enjoyable event to begin the summer, and we were able to create a
good relationship with the County Park coordinators. In the future, we plan to help
County Park with their other events and fundraisers. For next month, we will
participate in the San Francisco AIDs walk with our members and are currently
organizing BART rides.
In July, we also plan to have an officer-member bonding event at a local park in
order to increase member and officer communication. For this bonding event, we
want to have a small picnic and play ice-breaker games, but not all the details are
set in stone yet. We are also planning to work with the Second Harvest Food
Bank closely to have a long-term service event for our key clubbers to participate
in. Although it is not finalized right now, our officers are currently planning a
Freshberry fundraiser for July and a Sweet Tomatoes fundraiser in August.
Irvington will also be preparing some more consistent monthly/bi-monthly
service events such as MS Nucleus Night (which is once a month) as well as host
more special/misc. events in the school year. These are the events are currently
being planned for the upcoming school year.
Currently we are up to fixing up our club and helping
Key Club regain its ground in James Logan High School,
and that's our priority for now. And we do have an
upcoming event which is on August 25 and it's the
Relay for life at James Logan's Track. And if anyone is interested in joining our team it's JLHS Key Club. Right
now we are currently planning a fundraising event with
Jamba Juice to help with donations to the American
Cancer Association for the Relay.
Though KIPP's Key Club has not been active
recently, we have big plans for the upcoming school
year. We want to hold three service events monthly,
and a project every other month. Though most of
our members are on vacation for the summer, we want to collect a team and participate in Mt.
Pleasant's Relay for Life. Last but not least, we want
to increase membership and have an amazing
experience in Key Club!

Milpitas Key Club helped out in the
Milpitas Relay for Life on June 23. Members were able to raise up to
$900.36 for the American Cancer
Society through donations. For the
month of July, members will be
painting murals at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center as community
service and attending Region 17's
annual Officer Training Conference.
Although Relay for Life was the only
event we had this month, we are currently planning and preparing for
the next school year: We hope to
host a charity dinner in the fall to
raise money for Pediatric Trauma Prevention before Fall Rally North.
Other smaller events to raise money
for events such as FRN and DCON
include merchandise sales, as the
cabinet is currently designing new lanyards and possibly sweatshirts
for members, car washes, and
Yogurtland fundraisers.
Mission San Jose Key Club hosted our annual “Kiss a Senior
Goodbye Grams” event in the month of June. We held meetings to
plan the event, publicize the event, and make the grams. During this fundraiser, freshmen, sophomores, and juniors bought cards
with Hershey kisses attached to give to the graduating seniors, in
sign of affection and respect. Our Key Club board members
delivered each gram to each senior personally during the senior's
3rd periods. Though the grams were specifically for underclassmen as well as the seniors themselves, to say a last farewell to their
fellow seniors many of the underclassmen had also bought these
grams to send to their fellow underclassmen. We were happy to
see the smiles on their faces when they received a gram.
Next year during MSJHS's orientation we will try to aim for
freshmen. Also we will connect more personally with our members via phone or email. This will make our members feel more bonded
with their officers, ultimately making them more motivated about
going to events as well as participating in fundraisers. For our
fundraisers, we will sell grams mainly during holidays, we will
continue doing our "Kiss a Senior Goodbye Grams".

The San Jose High Key Club is preparing for the
upcoming school year financially, recruiting, and
events wise. We have been budgeting for all of the
events this upcoming year and have chosen most of the events we will be participating in. Our summer
meetings have also included coming up with ways
to increase our member count. We've also worked
on improving ourselves as a board and club in
general through bonding activities. I think my club is
well prepared for the upcoming school year.
Piedmont Hills Key Club is going through quite a
few changes,a change of board and a change of
mascot. With everything going on, I’ll admit that at
times it’s difficult to focus on what Key Club is really
about: service. There’s much to be done, such as training new officers or organizing the club binder,
but it all comes down to the members and their
participation in helping the community. For the
coming school year, I’d like to bring our club to a height that we’ve never reached before, with a
variety of activities so that there’s something for
each and every member to enjoy. This includes
socials so that the members and officers can grow
closer, promoting even better cooperation in our
efforts to serve.
Our school is preparing for the upcoming school year
by recruiting new members and spreading more information about Key Club on our facebook group
page! I'm looking back to some pros and cons of
how we ran events and meetings last year, and
hopefully, we can improve our club this year.

JUNE Division Council Meeting DCM In the Japanese culture, 1,000 cranes
represent one wish. If you can wish for
one thing what would it be? Division 12 East made one wish on June 22, that is
for all patients of the Kaiser Permanente’s
Children Hospital to be healthy and happy.
In total we made 760 cranes. All were
donated to the hospital.
June DCM was held by American High School at Lake Elizabeth. Besides from
making cranes throughout the meeting,
we got an opportunity to meet Cancer
survivor and her best friend, who both
promote Relay For Life around the area. In the future, we hope to participate in Relay
For Life, an event that celebrates the lives
of many cancer survivors and fights for a
cure to this deadly disease.
Thank You American High School!
International Convention [ICON] I didn’t really know what to expect going to International Convention 2012. I
didn’t know anyone with the exception of Vanessa and Annie, and looking
back, I didn’t know much about Key Club at all. And yet, within less than a
week all of that changed: I met some of the most outgoing and friendly Key
Clubbers on the district and international level; I was inspired by others’ unwavering dedication to this organization; I admired the grace and confidence
that the international board members held themselves; I even stupidly chanted
and clapped alongside my fellow CNH bees (those who have seen me at
school rallies would be shocked because they can testify that I am possibly
one of the most unspirited people you will ever have the misfortune of encountering). Yes, I may have initially signed up for ICON to mainly visit
Disneyworld and consequently The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, but I
ended up going away with much more than butterbeer in my stomach and
souvenirs in my pocket. When I returned one week later, I found myself more knowledgeable and more eager to serve, only wishing that I had more time as
a Key Clubber. After all, 4 hours of caucusing and nearly 5 hours spent in the
House of Delegates can not only induce a headache and sore back, but it can
also provide invaluable knowledge such as what fundraisers are typically
successful, how to approve proposed amendments, and who Robert F. Lucas was. Key Club International is completely different than Key Club on the club
level, but I naively didn’t realize the difference until ICON. On that note, I
encourage everyone, especially underclassmen, to attend ICON 2013 in
Washington D.C. because it is truly an unBEElievable experience!

Upcoming events Region Training Conference [RTC]
Division Council Meetings, DCMs, are events where schools within our division get together to plan upcoming
Key Club events. The best thing about DCMs is that they are opened to ALL the KEY CLUBBERS! Every time, I attend a DCM, I meet someone new. DCMs are the events that keep us closer as one division. I hope to see
YOU at the next DCM! Please ask your club president for more information.
August DCM Location: Milpitas food pantry
Time: August 11, 3-5 PM.
September DCM Location: Region Training Conference
Time: September 30th, 2012

KICKING OFF SCHOOL with RTC, the first region event of the school year.
What’s better than meeting Key
Clubbers all around Regions 9, 15 & 17,
camping overnight with your fellow
superheroes, and learning about the
Key Club?!
This year, RTC’s theme is “Surfing for
Service.” We, Key Clubbers serve our
communities and everyone else around
us. By serving, we create ripples of
effect, changing the lives of others who we helped. Surfing for Service simply
means making a difference in our
community just by starting with one
kind act. So come join us at RTC, and
we’ll go “Surfing for Service.”
RTC is a two days event, starting on September 29th to the 30th. If you’re
interested in going, please contact your
club president!

As a member, Aliza has shown incredible dedication to not only Key Club
but also the community. She has done more than 50 hours this year
as a freshman, which is more than what most members and even some
of last year officers have done. She is polite and courteous at events, and
given the push she has the potential to rise to a leadership position.
Aliza Truong Milpitas High
Anna Hoehenrieder Irvington High
Anna worked for several hours looking up potential
summer service events for our club to do such as
Festival in the Park and Second Harvest Food Bank.
She is also currently looking into the local YMCA as a
possible permanent service event our club could help
out with. Anna has attended the majority of division
events (such as the installation banquet, DCM) as well
as participated in many service events we have held
as well. She has consistently communicated with the
other officers as well as Shanel (our vice president)
and myself, Vivian, regarding future events and
updates. She is an excellent asset to our officer team
and has more than held up her end of her job :) Thank
you for everything, Anna!
Members of the Month are the dedicated Key Clubbers who always put service above self, who
care for the others as much as they care for their community and who truly represent Key Club for
what it stands for! Congratulation to Aliza Truong and Anna Hoehenrieder for being our Members of the Month! Whether it’s because of your service or simple kindness, you are the role model of our
division. So once again, congratulation!

You finally reached the end of our August Newsletter! This newsletter is covered with fireworks, statue of
liberty, and the American flag. You can pretty much guess the theme of this Newsletter. It’s 4th of July. I hope
that everyone enjoyed reading the newsletter as much as seeing all the fireworks. Besides from the amazing
fireworks, our clubs really showed amazing achievements through all their activities whether it’s volunteering at Relay for Life or planning for the upcoming school year. Even though it’s only summer, I can already tell
that next year will be a blast from reading all the plans that each school has. Asides from planning for the
future, we looked at our past events such as June DCM and ICON and saw the amount that we have done in
just one month! Don’t worry if you miss out the past events because upcoming events, RTCs and DCMs, will
be as much fun or even more! Last but not least, we revealed our Members of the Month, who are the hard working bees that deserve great appreciation just like all the Key Clubbers out there. This is the end so thank
you for reading the August Newsletter, and see you next month!
