HELLO SUPERVILLAINS!
School is starting up again for most of us, and I
want to remind all of you that the beginning of the
school year is a great time to recruit new members,
increase service hours, and fundraise! There are
plenty of member recruitment and retention
techniques that you can use for your own club that
will help in this process. Continue to plan
proactively with your club. Those first few meetings
make a huge impact on your potential members –
make the most of it! Make them want to stick with
Key Club for the rest of their high school years. We,
as leaders, want to inspire others to become part of
this ohana we call Key Club!
Keep in mind that Fall Rally North is on
October 19th – it might sound far away, but it’s
coming up really quickly! Start planning what
you’re going to make and wear for spirit gear – you
are not limited to what the spirit pack offers. Go
above and bee-yond to rep that green and gray
all day! BUT WAIT! There’s more – fundraising for PTP
with your clubs! You should all be actively
fundraising for PTP prior to FRN. Take advantage of
this time to plan and successfully carry out a
fundraiser. All funds donated to PTP will be stored in
our “division account,” which we will use to bid on
district officers, including myself!
Keep up the golden work Super Villains! I will
see you all on September 28-29, where YOU will be
coming to RTC as the golden Stars of Service!
Striving for service,
Lindon Tran

As a division, we’ve set a few goals to
push our division to reach new heights!
Keep in mind that not only is Fall Rally
North coming up soon, but also that we
CAN still fundraise for PTP after Fall Rally.
As a joint effort, Division 12 South can
have an enormous impact on the world.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL Member Recruitment A new school year means new members!
Look back to our district goals;
we have some large numbers
involved! Without more Key Club
members, we would not be able
to achieve such goals. Now that
the new school year is coming up,
we should start looking into ideas
and methods to get more

This month the Division 12 South Council Meeting was hosted by Oak
Grove Key Club on August 17th in Palmia Park from 3PM to 5PM. During the
DCM we had a guest speaker from the Santa Teresa Library who talked about
service and academic programs with the various branches of the San Jose
Libraries and a presentation by PTP Task Coordinator Trisha Nguyen. Oak
Grove Key Club sold pizza, spam musubi, and cookies along with their water
balloons to fundraise for PTP! Right as the clouds began to clear, we started
our water balloon games. After about 1,000 water balloons, a few boxes of
pizza, two trays full of spam musubi, and a few minor difficulties, the August
DCM became a big splash of fun! Thank you to everyone who helped
coordinate and prepare this wonderful DCM!

ANDREW HILLFor this bittersweet month of August, we
intended not to have any events so that our
members could spend their last few days of summer
relaxing and doing their summer assignments! Our
design for our mural has been finalized and we plan
to paint it during the Labor Day weekend. For the
following months, we will have at least 2-4 events
each! We will also be collaborating with other clubs
to fundraise. We will have our first club rush and
meeting in the month of September!

THE KEY CLUB EXPERIENCE
No words can express how I
felt when I first joined Key Club. I
have never seen such an
astounding number of people
dedicating their time to one goal
– to create a better world. I will
never forget how honored I felt
when my school’s Key Club
president specifically asked me
to design a mural for our Key
Club. It was my first contribution
as a Key Club member. I am
really looking forward to see
what new opportunities Key Club
has in store this year. Also, I can’t
wait to make new memories with
my new Key Club family and
continue to help make a
difference in our communities!

ANN SOBRATO In late July and early August,
Sobrato Key Club got a substantial
amount of activities done. We hosted a
carwash with Willow Glen Key Club on
Juily 27th. On August 6th we advocated
for Voices United, a substance abuse
prevention non-profit organization, at
the National Night Out at the Seven
Trees Community Center. We also sent a
few volunteers to the last Music in the
Glen of the summer on August 8th.
Simar Dhillon attended the Spirit of 45
with other Division 12 South Key
Clubbers as the only member from
Sobrato. Four for you, Simar!
- Kyle Dimla, President
The car wash was a fun
experience! Getting up early in the
morning was worth it because we were
fund raising for a good cause. Not only
that, but comining with Willow Glen to
help out made the experience that
much more fun! Getting to know new
faces from Willow Glen was great
because everyone was so nice. Seeing
everyone work so hard at the carwash
made me feel so happy; I hope we can
have another car wash soon!

Within the past month, EV Key Club has volunteered
at Sausage Fest, a 5k or 10k run that is organized to
benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. We also
volunteered with our monthly Second Harvest Food
Bank Food Distribution. Including August, we were able
to complete 259 hours of service over summer as a club
– and to further increase these hours within the school
year, we have planned out ways to recruit members!
Club rush will be in about 2-3 weeks, so to recruit
members, we are planning to create large posters and
place them all around school. We also plan on using
clothespins and writing messages on them and putting
them on random students during break and lunch. We
also plan on decorating a tri-fold board with Key Club
info and visuals in order to capture the attention of
other students. It will include examples of events we do
and have answers to questions about Key Club and
how it will benefit them.
- Thuyvy Tu, President
Hey D12S!EVHS Key Club recently got the honor of volunteering with
San Jose’s Sausage Fest 5K & 10K Run on August 3rd. It is a race benefiting
the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. At 6:30AM on a freezing morning at
Los Gatos Creek County Park, EV Key Clubbers gathered to draw smiley
faces on runner bibs and prepared to cheer on runners from 8 to 80 years
old! Free Sausages were handed out to all participants, and cheering
continued until the final runner crossed the finish line. Families and friends
alike came from all over the Bay Area to support the race’s cause!

For the month of August, Gunderson
started off working with Kiwanis. On August
3rd, we participated in the Back to school
Shopping Spree at Old Navy in Oakridge mall
to help low-income family children. We also
worked with other Key Clubs sponsored by
the Downtown San Jose Kiwanis to host the
Kiwanis Take Over meeting. We hosted a
Panda Express fund raiser on August 7th. On
August 10th, we volunteered with the
Salvation Army at the Back to School
Backpack Carnival with our Kiwanis. We hope
to continue serving our community regularly
although summer vacation is coming to an
end.
- Vivian Nguyen
Books Aloud is an event held at the MLK Library
in Downtown San Jose and is provided to us by our
Kiwanis Club. We send out volunteers each month to
help sort out audio books to ship out to the visually
impaired and those with learning disabilities. This
event is a great cause to help come out and support
those with different types of learning disabilities. We
always have a fun time at the event and I believe
that other Key Clubbers should definitely get a
chance to volunteer as well!
- Brandon Roman
On August 5th, Gunderson and Santa Teresa
worked with San Jose and Independence Key
Clubs to host a wonderful meeting for our
Kiwanians. We presented our hard work to
Kiwanians and fundraised for our club as well
as advertised new events. This meeting helped
us get to know more about our sponsoring
Kiwanis Club and it was definitely a pleasure to
work with clubs from 12East!

San Jose Summer Jazz Fest as an
energetic, upbeat event in
Downtown San Jose on August
9th to the 11th. Everyone
gathered around for three days
of jazz in the summer sun. It was
a very fun event to work at – a
highlight for everyone’s summer!
- Yasmin Sepah
In the month of August, many of our
members began easing back into the routine of
school. We do not have many service events
planned in August, but we have plenty of
service events in September already!
We participated in:
San Jose Jazz Summer Fest (August 9th)
Williams Elementary Ice Cream Social & Movie
Night (August 16h)
Calero Shoreline Clean Up (August 17th)
Second Harvest Food Bank (August 24th)
Italian Family Fiesta (August 24th)
SAN JOSE SUMMER JAZZ FEST
In the month of August, we’ve been
putting our focus into the August DCM
and fundraising. We accumulated about
2 fundraising events in August. We held a
fundraising event at our school for
schedule distribution and sold lemonade
and Gatorade to kids picking up their
school IDs and schedules. We also have a
fund raising event on the day of the DCM
at Tapioca Express. We will receive 15% of
the profit and the event goes all day!

An exciting new school year has just begun and like
July, August had been a good month for Pioneer Key
Club. This month, we’ve attended the Edenvale Library
Book Sale and the Salvation Army Back to School
Shopping Spree, where we donated our morning to
escorting a child through Old Navy and helping them
get clothes for the new school year. The Spirit of 45 was
a fun event in which volunteers helped run a post-World
War II reenactment fair in Kelley Park. We also had a
park beautification event on the day of the August
DCM!
- Jacquelyn Quach, President
On August 6th, I attended National Night Out with a few other people from clubs in
our division where we volunteered for the non-profit Voice United, a substance abuse
prevention program. We passed out literature on what the program does and its
current newspaper as well as took down names and emails for people to get
connected with the organization. IT was a little awkward to just approach random
people, and at times there was a language barrier, but by the end we were able to
get a decent amount of names and passed out literature to multiple families. After the
volunteering, volunteers were able to get free pizza and snow cones, both of which
were delicious, and sit and enjoy the Night Out for what it had to offer. This was a great
event because we were able to spread awareness of a great local non-profit and
what it has to offer; and good food is always a bonus.

For moth of July, Santa Teresa Key Club has been working hard to finish the summer
strong and prepare for the upcoming school year. We volunteered for an entire weekend at
the Edenvale Library Book Sale and at events given to us by our Kiwanis, such as Books
Aloud, Music in the Glen, and the Old Navy Back to School Shopping Spree. We also
participated in the Almaden Half Marathon, the first of many upcoming marathon events.
Lastly, we participated in our schools’ Freshmen Orientation, as tour guides and club
recruiters. We gained almost 100 signups from the Class of 2017, and I’m excited to get to
know each and every one of the nervous, awkward freshmen. Now that the school year has
started, Santa Tersa Key Club is excited to make an impact on our campus.
- Adrian “King Koopa DeGuzman
Santa Teresa High School Key Club President 2013-2014
On July 28th, I was fortunate enough to help
sell books at Edenvale Library and become
part of their awesome volunteer team.
Volunteers each take turns to sell books and
raise money which funds special library
programs and events such as performers and
author visits. It was one of the most incredible
events I’ve ever been to. No words can
describe and no picture can portray how
welcoming the workers are. I certainly will go
back next time and dedicate more time to
volunteer at this event again!

We have been tutoring English learners for
the past 8 weeks and finished on August 6th.
We mainly helped them read and write to
get them prepared for school. We also did
the Sausage Fest on August 4th where we
cheered for the runners and cleaned up.
Thank you to everyone who came to our
DCM on the 27th of July! We hope you guys
had a great time hearing the live band and
enjoyed great company with the Willow
Glen community! We also raised $700 at the
car wash with Ann Sobrato to fundraise for
the Eliminate Project, thank you to everyone
who came to support!
- Bernadette Vu, President
During summer on Thursday
evenings, many came by Willow
Glen Elementary for a Willow
Glen tradition: Music in the Glen.
Willow Glen helped host the
Kiwanis food booth at MITG –
with help from other D12S
schools! Whether it was handing
out soda, scrambling for
popcorn, or simply hanging out
with friends, every Thursday
brought new faces and new
experiences. It is definitely an
event WG is sure to return to in
coming years!

We've received three pages full of sign
ups at Orientation on August 5th. On behalf
of service events, we've volunteered for
Spirit of 45 in History Park on August 10th
from 12PM- 4PM. Also, we will be
volunteering for Sacred Heart on August
24th from 9AM - 12PM by packaging food
bags for the needy!
- Kathy Loc, President
The event I attended with my club was Spirit of '45 which was on
August 10th, 2013. It was located at History Park, which is next to Kelley
Park. The event's purpose was to remember the end of World War II and
also to honor the soldiers who served and fought during the war. My
experience was great and I was to sell water bottles for the people who
got thirsty. The customers were friendly and everyone was dressed in
beautiful clothing back in the day. I would like to volunteer for this event
again next year!
