Ross Smith Memorial. Located in parkland setting with numerous trees, signposts and road infrastructure in the vicinity.

The Memorial is theoretically on the axis for motorists, but their attention is correctly else where.

Large Milkwood. This tree is evident in historical photos taken at the original opening.

Large Raintree. This tree is already overhanging the Memorial and its root system would extend as far as the Memorial. There is potential for future damage.

Trees have been removed, leaving the area more open.

Dense vegetation along the cliff edge provides a dark ‘backdrop’ to the memorial.

Shared Pathway skirts by Memorial.

Surrounding landscape levels higher than slab around the Memorial.

Steep slope descending away from Memorial

Fenced cliff line.

Trees have been removed.

Existing trees to be retained.

The adjoining road is busy and motorists should not be distracted from their driving responsibilities.

The surrounding slab and low masonry wall are recent additions and could be removed as part of the upgrade.

Surrounding landscape could be regraded to overcome surface drainage issues and provide an enhanced presentation of the Memorial.

Notes:

Memorial should be more prominent within an enhanced landscape.Opportunity to tell more of the story of the historic fl ight.Area needs to allow for ongoing celebrations including the centenary in 2019.

Rain Tree (Albizia saman) poses risk to Memorial – root spread threatens base and heavy shading and fl ower drop has led to mould and discolouration. The tree is in poor condition and dropping branches.

Small Pongamia (Milletia pinnata) to be removed to open up views to Memorial from shared path.

Small Paperbarks (Melaleuca sp) are stunted and performing poorly. Remove and replace with more suitable species.
