he NOV® Grant Prideco GPDS® connection

provides enhanced performance without

requiring special running and handling

procedures. Make-up characteristics of the

GPDS connection are similar to that of API

connections. Both connections spin-up freely

from the stab to hand-tight posit ion. In the

hand-tight posit ion, the external shoulder

makes contact. This shoulder is the primary

seal for the connect ion just as on an API

connection.

 As the connect ion is made-up f rom the hand-

tight to power-tight posi tion, the box

counterbore compresses, the pin base

elongates elastically and the internal secondary

torque shoulder engages. The secondary torque

shoulder allows for enhanced load distribution

across the th readed region and provides

increased torsional capacity when compared to

standard API rotary shouldered connections.

Since the secondary shoulder functions solely

as a torque stop and not a pressure seal, minor

damage to the shoulder can be tolerated without

adversely affecting connection performance.

he NOV Grant Prideco Double Shoulder  (GPDS)

connection is a high-performance, rotary shouldered

tool joint connection available for dr ill pipe ranging in size

from 2-3/8 to 6-5/8 inches. GPDS offers a versatile alternative

to standard API connection designs when higher torsional

strength and tool joint wear is desired. GPDS is fully

interchangeable with corresponding API

FH or NC counterparts. GPDS is a proven

connection that provides increased

torsional capacity, promotes more

streamlined confi gurations and tolerates

more tool joint wear than standard API

  NOV Grant Prideco’sGPDS connection is s imilar to

the GPDS incorporates an

internal secondary torque

shoulder. The GPDS

connection has the same

thread form and is

interchangeable with its API counterpart

connection as shown in the illustration above.

Note how the GPDS pin secondary to rque

shoulder runs out without shouldering in the

back of the API box connection.

  “ Interchangeability” means that the

connections w ill mate together, make-up and

function; however, the performance properties

will be limi ted to that of the API connection. For

example, a GPDS38 is interchangeable

wit h NC38, and a GPDS55 is

interchangeable with the 5-1/2 FH, but

when mated together the NC and FH

limit the connection performance

properties respect ively. The table to

the righ t identi fies the GPDS

connections and their interchangeable

 API connec tion types.

SLIM PROFILE

  The GPDS connection’s increased tors ionalstrength allows for tool joint dimensional

optimization more suitable for the pipe body

torsional strength. GPDS connections can be

conf igured with a smaller OD and larger ID

compared to standard API connections wi thout

sacrificing torsional capacity. This feature allows a

larger diameter drill pipe to be used for improved

hydraulic performance. The GPDS double-

shoulder design also provides a true flush inside

diameter through the mated tool joint assembly.

There is no gap or change in the inside diameter

from the box to t he pin, creating a smoother fluid

flow wit h less turbulence, in addition to eliminating

the opportunit y for trapped cement and cuttings.
