QUAID’S MESSAGE

Message to the All Pakistan Educational Conference at Karachi fromQuaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah. 27 November 1947

“ I welcome you all to the Capital of Pakistan and wish you success in your deliberations,which I hope will bear fruit and practical results.

You know the importance of education and the right type of education cannot beoveremphasized. Under foreign rule for over a century, in the very nature of things, Iregret, sufficient attention has not been paid to education of our people, and if we areto make any real, speedy and substantial progress we must earnestly tackle this questionand bring our educational policy and program on the lines suited to the genius of ourpeople and vast developments that have taken place all over the world.

Education does not merely mean academic education, and even that appears to beof a very poor type. What we have to do is to mobilize our people and build up thecharacter of our future generations.”

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE:

Dadabhoy Institue of Higher Education has been sponsored by Dadabhoy Foundationwith a specific focus on serving the cause of higher education. The institute receivedits charter in the year 2003 and has been placed in Category “W” (A) by HigherEducation Commission. It is the mandate of the Foundation that the institute shouldplay a significant role in reducing inadequacies originating from limited access tohigher education, problems of equity and deteriorating quality of education. Further,special attention has to be paid to educational needs of meritorious students withlimited financial means. Using higher education as a tool, the malaise of socialstratification, we are hoping, will cause social mobility. I am glad that the instituteis living up to this mandate. Certainly this initiative will be extended further with thelaunching of a huge university complex at Hawkesbay.

I understand that in the age of knowledge economy higher education has to play avital role. Accordingly, DIHE has been further activated not only for teaching but alsofor research. The addition of new highly qualified faculty with Ph.D. degrees shouldbe able to make rich contribution in this direction for the benefit of our students.

The addition of new building for housing the Business School with its state-of-the-artExecutive Development Center should be able to cater to the educational needs ofintellectually robust students at the cutting edge of knowledge. It is my desire that theBusiness School should become a centre of attraction for those who wish to developreal professionalism in finance, trade, management, marketing and Islamic banking,among others. Further, to keep pace with advancing frontiers of knowledge theintroduction of BS Degree in Electronics and Communication will go a long way inthe training of our youth in the rapidly growing field of telecommunication. My messageto my faculty is to work with mission and play an important role in the nation-buildingtask.

RECTOR’S MESSAGE:

The student’s community in Karachi and elsewhere will be pleased to know thatDadabhoy Institute of Higher Education has taken a quantum leap in its academicprograms. It has been elevated as category ‘W’ (A) Institution by the Higher EducationCommission. Taking cognizance of rapid advances in Science and Technology, theinstitution has upgraded its teaching – learning process through the addition of highlyqualified professionals in Computer Science, Information Technology, Electronics,Communication and various fields of Business Administration. It is satisfying that theinstitute is the leader in offering the highly profitable degree, namely, BS in Processand Financial Engineering, A separate Executive Development Centre with state-of-the-art facilities is an additional feature of the Business School.

I am glad that the institute is carving out its path through introducing new teachingtools emphasizing upon interactive learning and problem solving. The major objectiveof the institute is to add value to graduate students, equip them with appropriate toolsin order to ensure high rate of return after their employability in the market. It issatisfying to note that our teachers are covering extra mile in sharpening the creativeabilities of students. This should enable them to introduce innovations in their workplaces. Since the extensive use of electronic and print media is a vehicle for reshapingthe mindset of our students, a course on Media Studies is being introduced for allstudents.

The doors of the institution are open to all. We invite the potential students to visitthe institution and have discussion with the faculty. Certainly, they will find DIHE asan Institution of choice. Further, to attract bright and meritorious students, DadabhoyFoundation has introduced 100 scholarships scheme to be awarded through a merit-based test held in July and December each year, details for which are available onour website. Our motto is to build a civil society by developing social capital incongruence with human capital. As we journey around, our new milestone will soonlead us to the establishment of a world class university in Hawkesbay.

Foreign University Link ProgramIn an effortt to further align the education standards in Pakistan with the westernuniversities DIHE has launched initiatives to make educational links with the foreignuniversities of good repute.

Ø University of Southampton has signed an MOU with DIHE to collaborate in thefollowing areas:

• Joint Research Programs• Curriculum Review• Visiting Faculty from University of Southampton• Split Ph.D. program between the two Institutes

Ø University of Strathclyde (UK) has signed an MOU with DIHE to:• Strengthen the DIHE Business School• Provide consultation and expertise in building our Hawkesbay main campus and

establishing, upgrading and strengthening the faculties of Business Management,Science and Technology, Engineering and Social Sciences.

Ø University of York (UK) has signed an MOU with DIHE to:• Strengthen the Business School• Provide consultation for the development of curriculum

Ø Institute for Leadership and Global Education has an exclusive agreement with DIHE to deliver joint programs that are recognised and validated by Nova Southeastern University (USA). These programs will include the following:

• Certificate and diploma courses that will lead on to a Masters Degree• Deliver Seminars in Pakistan• Deliver Workshops in Pakistan• Deliver Lectures in Pakistan

Ø Senior Experts Service (Germany):Through Senior Experts Service, Prof. Dr. Diether Gebert, Dean of ManagementSciences of Technical University of Berlin is extending assistance in academicdevelopment and also delivers lectures to the graduate and research students.

Dadabhoy Foundation is a registered non-profit making organization and is thesponsor of Dadabhoy Institute of Higher Education. It has been striving to makecontributions in cultural, socio-economic, educational and scientific developmentof our society since 1982.

The Foundation consists of well-qualified people with vast experience in thefield of education, economics and social development. The Foundation strivesnot only to contribute to the uplift of the economy of our country but also towork towards the welfare of society as a whole. Dadabhoy Foundation has alsobeen active as a publisher and some of its publications have been given “TheBest Book of The Year” award by the government of Pakistan.

Vision, Mission and Goals

Vision

Dadabhoy Institute of Higher Education is committed to becoming one of the leadingcenters of Higher Education in Pakistan while serving the intellectual, cultural, social,environmental and economic needs of the country. As a result DIHE will cause humandevelopment through its educational programs, research initiatives and outreach efforts.

Mission

DIHE is devoted to discovering, disseminating and applying knowledge for theadvancement of the Pakistani Society in the perspective of global changes. The DIHEidentifies and attracts undergraduate and graduate students of high potential, especiallythose who have been historically under-represented because of limited financialresources. Through commitment to excellence in teaching and educational services,DIHE prepares students for lifelong learning and for constructive participation in thecommunity.

Goals

The Institute will promote continuous quality improvements in teaching, learning,scholarly research, and creative activities.

The institute hopes to achieve exemplary undergraduate education based on integratedcore curriculum and technology aided teaching – learning process. In addition, theInstitute will establish reputed Masters Degree programs which should enable thestudents to be leaders in their respective fields and for further education leading todoctorate programs.

The Institute will establish strong research programs in Basic & Applied Sciences tostrengthen its M. Phil / Ph.D. programs.

The Institute will establish international links with reputed institutions of the world.

The Institute will make every effort to develop the cultural climate for bringing abouta change in the youth of Pakistan for healthy competition and betterment of society,emphasizing at the same time on the development of leadership and collegiality.

The Institute will develop technology infrastructure and information resources necessaryto support the Institute's programs / services, and research.

By 2010 DIHE will establish a full fledged campus spread over 250 acres of land,housing most of the faculties allocated to the Institutes in the charter, with the studentpopulation of between 5-8 thousand.

Dadabhoy Institute of Higher Education

Introduction

Dadabhoy Institute of Higher Education (DIHE) was set up in the year 2000 byDadabhoy Foundation. The institute received its charter from the government of Sindhin 2003.

It has been recognized by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and the CharterInspection and Evaluation Committee (CIEC) of Education Department Governmentof Sindh. DIHE ranks as a top grade educational institution and also as a “W” (A) gradeeducational Institution because of its well designed academic programs, appropriateeducational facilities, high class foreign educated PhD faculty and state-of-the -artfacilities.

The Institute offers academic programs at two campuses, the Hill Park Campus, locatedat Shaheed-e-Millat Road and North Nazimabad campus located in Block “A” NorthNazimabad. The Hill Park Campus offers degree programs in the faculties of BusinessAdministration, Science and Law.

Degrees offered in Faculty of Business Administration include:BBA, BBA (Financial Engineering), MBA (Islamic Banking), MBA (Banking and Finance),MBA(Human Resource), MBA (Finance), MBA (Marketing) and M.Phil leading to PhD.The Executive Development Center of Business School complements the degree basedprograms and provides a continuous range of seminars, workshops and short courseson specialized topics of particular interest to employees of the corporate sector.

The Science Faculty offers degree programs for BS (Computer Science), BS (SoftwareDevelopment), BS (Information Technology), BS (Electronics and Communication), BS(Process and Financial Engineering), MCS and MS (Information Technology), MS/Philleading to PhD.

The degree programs offered by Law Faculty include: LLB and LLM.

While DIHE benefits from an excellent academic foundation, it also offers second tonone environment that nurtures the overall development of all the students. Some ofthe activities that are focused on these objective include:• Remedial English classes (Free of cost classes for students who need them.)• Student grooming classes• An active sports program• Ongoing cultural activities like theatrical programmes, poetic and musical evenings

etc.• Student's societies

North Nazimabad Campus was taken over by DIHE in May 2004. Since then all effortshave been made for the improvement and advancement. Initially NN Campus wasoffering degree program in MBA and B-Tech (Adv/Hons) for evening students only. In2005 Morning Programs in BBA, BS (CS) and B.Com were introduced. Recently MITprogram for evening students has been launched to meet the emerging needs of ITManagers in the market.

The administrative staff and faculty members of NN campus are committed to theirprofessional responsibilities. The NN Campus is moving towards the path of excellence.

(b) Facilities

The institute is conscious of the fact that students admitted to the Institute shouldreceive value added education. This is possible if the teaching learning process isadequately fortified academically and supplemented by a range of extra curricularactivities. To be able to do so, the Institute offers instructional programs for variousdegrees at the cutting edge of knowledge. Highly qualified teaching faculty combinedwith facilities for practical work, internship, and delivery of specialized lectures byexperts in various fields constitute the main frame of the academic programs of theinstitute in all fields.

The availability of a well stocked library is a prerequisite for enhancing the qualityof education. We have a spacious library containing more than 6000 books on relevantsubjects and 15 research journals (including international) having high impact factor.The library has a temperature controlled (airconditioned) reading environment withcomfortable seating arrangements. Liberal grants are provided for the continuousimprovement of library. A separate section has been allocated for digital Library havingcomputers with high speed Internet access. Through the courtesy of HEC (HigherEducation Commission) the Digital Library has access to more than 11,000 researchjournals of international repute and recognition a separate book bank of multiplecopies of text books has been created for the convenience of students who can borrowbooks for long periods from the book bank. Students are encouraged to use librarymaterials for preparing their assignments. Comfortable reading facilities have beenprovided for study of various materials with in the library. There are seven laboratoriesof which six are for computer studies. Three of these laboratories are located in theBusiness School, while four are in the Science School.

The computer and IT education are further strengthened by the well equipped Physics/Digital laboratory. Each campus of the Institue enjoys the complete networking facility(Intranet). The facility is needed by the students as well as by the faculty and otherstaff members.

CLUBS AND SOCIETIES

Drama and Music Society

The society has staged dozens of quality plays and programs some of which wererecorded and televised by TV channels like the Indus, and ARY. Programs of the societyhave figured on various FM channels as well. The avowed aim of the society is toidentify the hidden talent among the students and having done that to develop it toits fullest potential. The society encourages students to participate in selected TVprograms as long as their participation does not clash with their studies.

Debating Society

Those who have a talent for speaking are given full opportunity to develop it. Thesociety sends it debating teams to institutions in and outside Karachi. It holds inter-university and intercollege declamation and debating contests regularly. DIHE debatingteams have won many prestigious debating contests locally as well as nationally. Animportant event in the calendar of the Society is the Abdul Ghani Dadabhoy trophy.The debates generate an enormous amount of enthusiasm. Institutions vie with oneanother to take part in this debate.

Advertising and Marketing Society

The society holds seminars, arranges lectures and presentations. It guides students inwriting their reports theses and case studies. National and International leaders inadvertising and marketing are invited to share their views from the platform of theSociety.

SHARP

Society of the Human Resource Professionals conducts quality seminars on differentaspects of human resource management. It invites speakers from corporate sectorsholding high portfolios at their work places to enlighten the listeners who are bothstudents as well as professionals.

Explorers Club

Explorers' Club arranges and plans expeditions and outings for its members. A placeis not just explored but sociological, economic and demographic dimensions are alsoprobed.

Computing Society

Anything at all to do with the computers falls within the scope of this society. Membersdiscuss with one another the latest developments in computers and computer sciences.

They share among themselves their perceptions of different aspects of computerdisciplines, difficulties and the problems they encounter.

Literary Society

The society organizes all literary activities on the campus. It periodically holds literarygatherings in which different dimensions of literature are discussed, for instance, inthe inaugural session of the society, Faiz Ahmad Faiz was remembered and both hispoetry and personality were discussed. The society provides a platform to the studentsto present their poems, articles and short stories. The society has discovered manynew poets and poetesses in DIHE.

SBFP

Society of Banking and Finance Professionals brings on a platform all those who areinterested in banking and allied subjects. It provides an opportunity to professionalsto air their views on different problems and issues they are confronted with. SBFPcreates awareness on vital issues in banking and finance management among highlyinfluential audiences.

Activities in DIHE

The calendar of activities and events in DIHE throughout the year kept on movingbriskly. Among the more significant of these were:

• Abdul Ghani Dadabhoy Running Trophy was held in style. The first second andthird winning teams in this intercollegiate bi-lingual debate were given cashawards of Rs.15,000, Rs.10,000 and Rs. 7,000. PECHS Girls College lifted thetrophy. The standard of speeches was so high that many among the audiencesaid “It was the best debate they ever attended”. The topic was, “Our survival

Lies in Spiritualism rather than in Materialism.” Lt. Gen. (R) Moinuddin Haiderpresided.

• The seminar “Journey of Pakistan, Present and Future” to mark the 68th anniversaryof the passage of the Pakistan Day Resolution left nothing to be desired. Thespeakers were top class, the content of their speeches was thought-provoking anda big relief from the superficial run-of-the mill thinking that one gets exposed tothese days. The speakers were , Professor Hasnain Kazmi , Mr. Aftab Ahmad Khan,Dr. Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui , Vice-Chancellor, Karachi Univrsity andMr. Qutubuddin Aziz and Dr. M. H. Qazi, Rector Dadabhoy Institue of HigherEducation.

• In the First Jang Forum that was held in the Auditorium of the Business Schoolthe topic that came up for discussion was “How can the Spiralling Prices of FoodItems be brought within reasonable limits”. The participants were: Mr. MuzammilAslam, Group Economist, KASB, Hari Ram Lohano, Senior Economist SocialPolicy and Development Centre and Mr. Anis Majeed, Chairman KarachiWholesale Grocers Association. In the question-answer session the panelistspraised the quality of questions that the students put to them.

In the Second Jang Forum the participants were: (1) Mr. Tariq Ikram, Fedral Ministerand CEO, Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (2) Mr. Abdullah Dadabhoy,Chairman, Dadabhoy Institute of Higher Education (3) Mr. Majyd Aziz Balagamwala,President, MHG Group of Companies (4) Mr. Zubair Motiwala, Chairman,Diamond Textile Pvt. Ltd. (5) Dr. Shahid Aziz Siddiqui, Former CommissionerKarachi and Federal Secretary Communication at present, Vice Chancellor,Ziauddin Medical College (6) Mr. Abrar Qureshi, an economist (7) Mr. AbdulHaseeb Khan, President Brooks Pharmaceutical Laboratories Pvt. Ltd. andChairman, Korangi Industrial Estate Association. (8) Mr. Muhammad IqbalChairman, APTMA. Among the myriad issues that were discussed was Dual systemof education which has created a lot of confusion in society.

The discussion was conducted by Mr. Akram Khan, Editor Jang Forum. Everyparticipant was given five to seven minutes to speak. The Forum was reported inJang.

• Personality grooming sessions were taken up with vigor. The session had ameasurable effect on the thinking of the students whose turnout improved. Themain figure in these sessions was Miss Tanveer Ishrat, faculty member.

• Workshop on Business Communication and Presentation Skills were organizedby Gulfstone Training Group in collaboration with the Business school.

• Three very successful workshops were held in which the main speakers werefrom UK, Australia and New Zealand.

• Workshops on Business Continuity Management were held in EDC. Three speakerswere from abroad.

• Dr. Deither Gabert from Germany worked for several days to prepare a report onhow to improve the working of the DIHE.

• Literary Society was launched. The work and life of Faiz Ahmad Faiz was discussed.• Deans Awards ( Dean of Business School) were conferred on students who excelled

in disciplinary conduct, academics and extra-curricular activities.• Mr. Shujaat Ali Baig visited the Dadabhoy Institute of Higher Education while he

was holding the office of Provincial Minister for Education, Sindh. ChairmanDIHE, Mr. Abdullah Dadabhoy presented to him a memento of DIHE.

• Winter Talent Show 2007 featuring lively skits and songs were produced byStudent Counsellor.

Admission, Fee Structure and Registration

Admission

1. Any person is eligible to register for a degree/diploma program who:

1.1 satisfies the requirements of entrance as specified in the eligibility criteriaof each degree program.

1.2 transfers from another Higher Education Commission (HEC) recognizeduniversity/degree awarding institute.

1.3 satisfies the requirements of qualifications specified for the course.

2. All applications for admission are to be submitted on a prescribed ApplicationForm obtainable from the Admission Office.

3. Applications for admission are received in Fall and Spring Semester in responseto announcements made by the Institute mainly through advertisements in nationaldailies.

4. All applicants with eligible credentials are required to sit in an admission test.Merit is determined on the basis of marks scored in the test (60%) and academicrecord (40%).

5. Any person who is enrolled for an academic program must sign the followingstatement:

“I solemnly promise that I will faithfully obey the statutes and regulations of theInstitute so far as they apply to me”.

6. Instruction for all taught and research courses are conducted in the Englishlanguage.

7. The Institute does not accept responsibility for any academic failure by any studentfor lack of compliance in any subject of study including that of English language.

8. Enrolment in the Institute in any particular subject may be denied orcancelled if:

8.1 the applicant is enrolled in any other institution.

8.2 the applicant fails to satisfy any requirement or condition specified in acourse regulation.

8.3 the applicant fails to deposit his dues as set out in fee regulations of theInstitute.

8.4 the application for admission(s) or enrolment contains untrue or misleadinginformation or is supported by untrue or misleading evidence.

8.5 the applicant commits misconduct or any breach of discipline subject tothe recommendations of the Discipline Committee.

9.2 Payment of Fees

a. Students who will pay full semester fee at the time of registration andin subsequent semesters will receive 5% rebate on the total tuition fee(registration fee excluded).

b. Student maybe granted Foundation Scholarship up to a maximumof 50% of tuition fee. However, all other fee will be paid bythe student on registration in the First Semester.

c. All general fees will be paid by the student as and when applicable.

9.3 Non-Payment of Dues

a. A student will be declared as defaulter, if he/she fails to clear his/herdues by the prescribed date.

b. Defaulters list will be posted on the notice board and circulated to theconcerned departments.

c. A defaulter, if he/she fails to clear his/her dues within 3 days of notificationwill not be allowed to attend classes or sit in any examination.

d. A default fine or Rs.100/- per day will be charged from the defaulterafter the expiry of the last day prescribed for the clearance of dues.

e. A student will be deregistered if he/she fails to clear dues by the endof second week after the notified date for payment of fees.

f. A student once deregistered can register himself/herself again duringthe same semester or in any subsequent semester on payment of re-registration fee of Rs. 5,000/- and clearing the pending dues.

g. In case of withdrawal from a semester or freezing the semester, within10 days of start of academic session, the student can claim 75% of histuition fee. The registration fee however, will not be refunded. If astudent fails to claim reimbursement of the fee, the student can havethe same amount adjusted against his tuition fee in any subsequentsemester.

h. A student receiving scholarship can claim reimbursement of 75% of hisshare of fee paid to the institute.

10. The Institute reserves the right to make changes in these regulations, includingfee charges, at any point during the calendar year. However, the same will beapplicable from the ensuing semester.

11. Transfer

11.1 Any person who has been enrolled at another university in Pakistan orabroadin an HEC recognized institution may transfer for a degree orqualification with such credit or status as may be determined by the academiccommittee constituted for this purpose, provided that he/she passes thedepartmental qualifying examination.

11.2 In any case, a transfer student will be granted exemption in credits attendedand successfully completed at another institution. However, the exemptionof credits will not exceed 50% of the credits required for the award of thedegree. The contents of transfer credit must comply with the course contentsof similar courses taught at the Institute.

11.3 In exceptional cases, any person who has attained partial academicqualification at any other recognized institution may be admitted withequivalent status on the approval of the Academic Committee andAcademic Council.

12. Registration

12.1 Each applicant, if admitted for studies at DIHE will be issued admission letterby the office of the Registrar. On receipt of the letter of admission, theapplicant is required to pay semester fee by the date specified. Failure to doso will automatically result in the cancellation of admission. However inspecial circumstances beyond the control of the admitted student, a graceperiod of up to one week may be allowed with a surcharge of Rs.100/- perday after the expiry of the date. This rule will be applicable in all subsequentsemesters.

12.2 Registration is carried out by the Admissions Office only after the admittedstudent has cleared all dues, certified by the Accounts Office. A registeredstudent will be issued a registration card carrying student’s registrationnumber. The same registration number will be valid in all subsequentsemesters.

13. Enrolment

13.1 Only those students who are registered will be eligible for enrolment in thecourses offered during the semester.

13.2 A student is required to fill enrolment forms in triplicate available from theAdmission Office of the Institute. The student may seek advice of the relevantdepartment at the time of enrolment.

13.3 The list of registered and enrolled students will be notified by the AdmissionOffice under intimation to the Enrolment Department.

14. Scholarships

A substantial number of scholarships are announced each semester by DadabhoyFoundation. Scholarships are awarded only on merit determined by ScholasticAptitude Test (SAT). Details are provided in a separate brochure available fromthe Admission Office of the Institute. A separate application is to be submittedfor availing the scholarship. Only those students who have good academic recordare considered for scholarship.

15. Fee Concession

Dadabhoy Institute follows a liberal policy of fee concession mandated byDadabhoy Foundation for meritorious students with limited financial means. FeeConcession Form has to be submitted along with application form. The MeansTesting Committee of the Institute determines the level of fee concession whichranges from 15% to 50% of tuition fee.

16. Add/drop of courses and Semester Freeze

16.1 A student enrolled in a semester may be allowed by the head of the departmentto add or drop a course. This shall be permissible only one week after thestart of regular semester.

16.2 There will be no charge on the replacement of a course with another course.However, if a new course is added, the tuition fee accruing on account ofthat shall be paid by the student.

16.3 If a student is unable to carry on studies in a particular semester, he maywithdraw from the semester within one week of the start of regular classesand may claim 75% of the tuition fee paid by him. He has also the optionof freezing the semester. In such cases the tuition fee will remain valid andmay be readjusted in any subsequent semester on rejoining. In any case,the courses which he has successfully completed will remain valid for 3academic years.

16.4 If a student suspends his studies during a semester without seeking properpermission for freezing the semester, his registration will be cancelled andhe/she will have to seek re-registration on payment of Rs. 5,000/- and anyother amount which otherwise is due on him.

Examination RegulationsNote: Students are required to read these regulations carefully

Assessment

1. The Institute follows a system of continuous assessment. This enables students to be in touch with their studies throughout the course of the semester.

2. The semester is spread over 18 weeks. Assessment is based on assignments,quizzes, 3 one hourly examinations during the semester and a final examinationat the end of the semester.

3. The weightage of 60% marks given to various portions of assessment shall bedetermined by the teacher. However, the final semester examination will carrya weightage of 40% marks.

4. In courses involving research reports / research projects 20% marks are set asidefor presentation; the remaining 80% marks are allocated to the report / project.

5. The Four Points Grading System will be used for evaluation. Grade Point Average(GPA) in each course will be determined by sum of partial examination / otherassignments, and the final semester examination.

6. In each semester three one hourly examinations will be conducted. Out of thesethree, two best scores will be counted towards the final grade. These twoexaminations will carry a weightage of 30% marks and will be announced,arranged and conducted by the course in charge in consultation with theDepartmental Head.

7. Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) will be calculated by the formula:Sum of (Credit Hours in a course x GPA) Total Credit Hours

8. Any student who maintains a GPA of 2.0 or more shall be promoted to the nexthigher class, irrespective of number of failures in the semester.

9. Any student who fails to maintain a GPA of 2.0 shall be placed on probation.

10. Any student scoring a GPA of less than 2.0 will be required to repeat the fullsemester except the courses in which the candidate has obtained passing grades.However, if he/she fails to achieve the required GPA after probation, within twosubsequent semesters, he/she will be removed from the university rolls.

11. A student will not be awarded the degree if he/she fails to maintain a CGPA of2.5, without any failures.

12. Withdrawal from a course will be allowed latest up to one week before the thirdhourly examination under approval by the course in charge, Departmental Headand Director of the institution. This will be shown in (W) letter in the transcript.

13. A student who fails to complete a course for reasons beyond his control he/shemay be granted a letter grade Incomplete (I). This course can be completedsubsequently, for which fresh course fee is to be deposited.

14. The results of all courses shall be displayed by the respective Head of Departmenton the notice boards within 10 days of the final semester examination.

15. The final result will be declared by the Examination Department within twoweeks of the last semester examination.

16. Transcripts of all semester results will be issued by the office of the Controller ofExaminations on the basis of the semester final results submitted by the Head ofthe Department. No provisional transcripts will be issued by the department.

17. Numerical grades will not be mentioned in the transcripts of the student.

18. The following committee may, if necessary, review the final semester result:

(a) The Rector (Chairman)(b) The Dean of the concerned Faculty(c) The Head of the concerned Institution(d) The Controller of Examinations

19. The final result, as approved by the Committee will be announced by the Controller of Examinations.

20. Transcript will be issued only by the Controller of Examinations to each studentafter the completion of each semester & on the completion of full degree program.

General

1. No student shall be allowed for examinations (Subject/Course) unless he/she hasattended 75% of the lecturers, demonstration, tutorials and practicals.

2. Breach of Rules of Examinations

2.1 If a candidate is found having in his possession, during examination anypapers, books, notes or any other material which might possibly be ofassistance to him/her in the examination, he/she can be expelled from theexamination of that day and subsequent days, if any, by the Head Invigilator,and his/her case shall be reported to the Controller of Examinations for suchfurther action as my be deemed necessary. The examination result of sucha candidate shall be liable to cancellation and further he shall be liable tobe debarred from appearing at any examination of the University and fromadmission to any class in the Institute or in any of its affiliated institutionsfor a period not exceeding two years.

2.2 Any candidate, detected in giving or receiving assistance or found guilty ofcopying from any paper, book or note, or using or attempting to use theseor any other unfair means, shall be expelled by the Head Invigilator fromthe examination of that day and subsequent days, if any, and his case shallbe reported to the Controller of Examinations for such further action as maybe deemed necessary.

The examination result of such candidate shall be liable to cancellation andfurther he shall be liable to be debarred from appearing in any examinationof the University and from admission to any class in the Institute or in anyof its affiliated institutions for a period not exceeding three years.

2.3 Any candidate, obtaining admission to the examination on false representationmade in his application form by false personalization, or using abusive orobscene language in the answer book, shall be liable to cancellation of hisexamination result and further he shall be liable to be debarred from appearingat any examination of the University and from admission to any class in theInstitute or in any of its affiliated institutions for a period not exceeding fouryears.

2.4 Any candidate, forging another person’s signature on his application or hisadmission form, shall be liable to cancellation of his examination result andfurther he shall be liable to be debarred from appearing at any examinationof the University and from admission to any class in the Institute or in anyof its affiliated institutions for a period not exceeding four years.

2.5 Any candidate, found guilty of disclosing his identity or making peculiarmarks in his/her answer book, shall be liable to cancellation of his/herexamination result and further he shall be liable to be debarred from appearingin any examination of the University and from admission to any class in theInstitute or in any of its affiliated institutions for a period not exceeding twoyears.

2.6 A candidate, guilty of communicating or attempting to communicate withan examiner with the object of influencing him in the award of marks, shallbe deemed to have used or attempted to use unfair means and shall be liableto the same punishment as provided for in Regulation (2.2). Communicationsof the same nature addressed to the Registrar or the Controller of Examinations,shall be treated as falling in the above category and liable to the samepunishment.

An approach made by a relative, guardian or a friend of a candidate willbe deemed to have been made by the candidate himself or herself as suchthe candidate will be liable to be punished as laid down in Regulations (2.2).If a candidate makes and appeal to an examiner through his answer, hisanswer-book shall be cancelled and he shall be liable to punishment as laiddown in Regulation (2.2).

2.7 In any case not covered by the foregoing Regulations, the Board of Governors,on the report of the person or body concerned shall take such action againstthe candidate(s) concerned as the circumstances of the case may warrant.

2.8 All punishments under Regulations 14 shall be awarded by the Rector onthe recommendation of the “Unfair Means Committee” appointed by theRector for the purpose, and the latter itself may hold enquiry or authorizeany one or more of its members to do so. The examination result of suchcandidates shall be withheld till such time as their cases are decided by theRector.

2.9 The Unfair Means Committee shall be the competent authority to determinewhether the charge of a breach of Rules of Examination has been provedor not.

3 If the Rector is satisfied that a situation has arisen which calls for a re-examinationof paper or papers in a particular subject or subjects, he may issue necessaryinstructions to that effect.

4 Supply of marks and Scrutiny of Results

4.1 Statement on a printed form, showing the marks obtained by a candidatein each head of passing will be supplied to the candidate on payment of afee of Rs.300/- per examination. Marks obtained by a candidate in individualquestions or in sections of a paper shall not be supplied.

4.2 Applications from candidates for an inquiry into the correctness of theirresult shall be submitted to the Controller of Examination and must beaccompanied in each case by a fee of Rs.500/- for each subject. The inquiryshall deal only with the correctness of the results and shall not include re-examination of the candidate’s answer-books.

No such application will be accepted unless it reaches the Institute Officewithin 30 days from the date of publication of the results.

4.3 All answer-books of the candidates will be destroyed after 120 (one hundredand twenty) days from the date of announcement of result of an examination.

5. Unsatisfactory Progress

5.1 The Institute may exclude any student from further enrolment or fromenrolment in a particular subject and may cancel his registration on thegrounds of unsatisfactory academic progress.

5.2 As a part of the academic policy, an undergraduate student is required tomaintain a CGPA of 2.0 in each semester, and a graduate student is requiredto maintain a CGPA of 2.5.

5.3 If a student is unable to maintain a CGPA of 2.0 or 2.5 as applicable in anysemester, he/she will be placed on probation. The probation will continuefor a maximum of 2 subsequent semesters during which period he is requiredto attain a CGPA of 2.0 or 2.5 as the case may be.

5.4 In case a student is unable to maintain the required CGPA for three consecutivesemesters, he is liable to be deregistered unless he shows compellingcircumstances which have affected his academic progress. For this he/shewill submit application to the Rector through the Head of the Departmentconcerned.

5.5 On the request of a student showing unsatisfactory academic progress, thedepartment may arrange special tuition for a student in areas of his/herweakness.

5.6 The parents / wards will be kept informed about the unsatisfactory progressof the student.

5.7 A student who is deregistered because of unsatisfactory performance fromthe institute will not be accepted for re-registration.

I was teaching in Europe in some of the most prestigious institutions. One fine day Ithought that I should also teach in Pakistan because it is the country of my origin. 1. Prof. Dr. M. M. H. Siddiqi

Dr. Siddiqi got his early education in St. Patrick’s School at Karachi. After Graduationwith honours from St. Patricks College, he got admission in the famous Institute ofWorld Economics at University of Kiel in North Germany for his M.Sc degree.

After getting his M.Sc, Dr. Siddiqi got his M.Phil qualification from one of the mostrenowned colleges of Europe, at Bruges in Belgium. From Bruges, Dr. Siddiqi gotacceptance from University of Basle at Basle in Switzerland. Under the supervisionof Prof. Dr. Gotfried Bombach, he wrote his Doctoral thesis, as a regular student ofBasle University and received his Ph.D. degree with Summa-cum-Laude.

Dr. Siddiqi’s teaching experience in Germany, England and U.S.A. has helped himto understand research and contemporary intellectual, academic & cultural life there.

Apart from the above, he got managerial experience in machine construction industry,petroleum economics, PVC manufacturing & bio-technical industry. As a teacher andas a manager, he has developed research interest in the fields of Education, VocationalTraining, Cross-Cultural Relations, Export Promotion and Economic Integration.

He is author of eight different books in German Language and many research articlespublished in Germany, Belgium and in Switzerland. He speaks 3 occidental (European)languages namely English, French and German & 3 oriental language such as Arabic,Persian & Urdu.

He is Professor and Dean, Faculty of Business Administration at Dadabhoy Instituteof Higher Education since 2006.

2. Prof Dr. Cdr (R) Aurangzeb

He did his Ph.D. in Economics from Hamdard University, Karachi and M.A. Economicsand LLB from the University of Karachi. Earlier, he served Pakistan Navy in differentcapacities, and finally he was Director of Studies and Chief Instructor at School ofLogistic and Management. His interests are Managerial Development, Macro & MicroEconomics, Logistic and Inventory Management. He is HOD of Business Administrationand Commerce & Professor in DIHE.

3. Shahbaz Ali Baig

Mr. Shahbaz Ali Baig has done his MBA from University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh USA.He has experience in the field of Marketing, IT, Quality Assurance, Project Management,Coaching & Consulting. He has held managerial positions in Fortune 500 companies,including General Electric and Georgia Pacific. He had managed ISO 9001 and ISO9002, internal audit programs at GE, implemented Quality initiative of Six Sigma atIT Department of Service Master. He has developed, implemented and conductedISO, Six Sigma Quality Assurance, Entrepreneurship Operations Management andMarketing Courses at GE and Business Colleges/Universities in U.S.A. and Pakistan.

4. Azmat Ahmad Ansari

He has some 3,000 articles in the national and the world Press to his credit. He hastranslated four major books. Documentaries based on his research and scripts havecarried the national flag in many world festivals. Dawn Images printed his interviewtwice. Twice talks written by him were sent to Pakistani Embassies and Missions tomark the Independence Day of Pakistan. He has done his M. A. in History and Englishfrom the Punjab University. He holds a diploma in Production and Broadcasting fromthe A.T.S., New York. His claim to eternal fame rests on his bringing into the mainstreamof journalism such places as Gorakh where Sindh’s first summer resort is sought tobe built, the mangrove forests of Pakistan , the creeks of the Indus delta. He is a knownenvironmentalist and an exhibition-level photographer. He has represented Pakistanas member of cultural delegations to Sri Lanka, Mauritius and Britain.

5. Tanveer Ishrat

She did M.A. (Organizational/Industrial Psychology) and B.A. (Hons) (Psychology)from the University of Karachi. She served Employees Federation of Pakistan and ILOas a resource person. She worked for progressive Group, SUPARCO, TEF and PIPS asConsultant HRM and HRD. She did teaching and training in NIPA, NILAT and PIATraining Centre. For further education, her interests are Educational Psychology,Research Methodology, Organizational Behaviour, Counselling Psychology, GenderIssues and Emotional Intelligence. She is Assistant Professor at DIHE.

6. Irfan Ali

Mr. Irfan Ali is MBA (Marketing) from IBA Karachi, M.S. (Electrical Engineering) fromU.S.A. and B.E. (Electrical Engineering) from NED Karachi. He has experience of Salesand Marketing of highly technical products as wireless Infrared, LAN computerhardware and specialized computer applications. He has been effectively involvedin the service and maintenance of commercial ink jet printing systems and personalcomputers and related products. His area of interest is Business Mathematics, Statistics,Information Technology and Computer Applications. He has been teaching as visitingfaculty in IBA, COMMECS, Muhammad Ali Jinnah University, PAF KIET and BahriaUniversity.

7. Sohaib Rabbani Khan

He is MBA (Marketing), M.S. (Marketing in progress) He has more than 20 yearsexperience of marketing mainly in pharmaceuticals. Served in giant multinationalsSandoz (Now Novartis) and Pfizer for almost fifteen years. He has remained a columnistin an English daily and freelance writer for Daily Dawn, The News & Pakistan Timesetc. As a Faculty member he served in Biztek for almost three years and later joinedDadabhoy Institute of Higher Education as the Editor-in-Chief of its research journal

8. Danish Ahmed Siddiqui

He has done his MBA from the Institute of Business Administration, (IBA) Karachi. HisPh.D. in Economics is in progress. His fields of interests are globalization and worldeconomy. He is teaching economics and Finance in DIHE. The quality of papers thatDanish writes, is usually very high. His paper “Impact of Foreign Direct Investment”on current account” was accepted in the Singapore Economic Review. He is a Lecturerin DIHE.

9. Erum Taufiq

She did MBA (Finance) from Iqra University and M.A. (Economics) and B.Com fromthe University of Karachi. She worked as Assistant Manager (Finance), Pakvet International(Pvt) Ltd. She taught in Jinnah University for Women and College of Digital andManagement Sciences. For further education, she is interested in the subject ofEconomics and Finance. She is a Lecturer in DIHE.

10. Izhar Ahmed Athar

Mr. Izhar A Ather, Assistant Professor in the faculty of Business Administration, did hisB. Com and Law degree form University of Karachi with distinctions. He is fellowMember of the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Pakistan (ICMAP).He is also an Associate Member of Institute of Bankers in Pakistan.

He has both national and International exposure and worked with Northrop Corporation(a US Based Company) on its project Peace Hawk in Saudi Arabia as Finance Manager.During his tenure with Northrop, he was closely associated with teaching andeducational programs of US Academy in Saudi Arabia and was also actively involvedin Parent/Teachers Association so as to resolve their education related issues. InPakistan, he has teaching experience with different Universities and ProfessionalInstitutes spread over a period of 10 years. He also remained Education Director ofICMAP. Besides this, as Executive Secretary of SAFA (South Asian Federation ofAccountants), he led and completed a number of professional and educational projectsrelated to SAARC countries. His area of interest is Accounting, Business and LabourLaw & Financial Management.

11. Beenish Kaleem

She did her M.Sc from University of Central England Business (Management), UnitedKingdom and BBA from CBM Karachi. (1) B.Com (Two years degree course) will consist of Part-I and Part-II.(2) Part-I will have six papers of 100 marks each.(3) Part-II will have six papers (including once optional) of 100 marks each.(4) The compulsory subject of Islamic Studies and Pakistan Studies shall be of 100

marks with the following distribution: (a) Islamic Studies/(Ethics for Non-Muslims)of 60 marks. (b) Pakistan Studies of 40 Marks.

02 YEARS MBA BANKING & FINANCE PROGRAM

Introduction

The proposed curriculum for the Master of Business Administration (Banking & Finance)Program has been designed after the review of several leading professional programssuch as those of the Institute of Bankers Pakistan and Chartered Institute of Bankers,London.

Given the fact that the program proposes to serve the professional/educational needsof both the private & public sectors in new situations, the generic approach to bankingeducation has been utilized in curriculum design. Consequently, the first year of study

leading to MBA degree has been designed to provide the basic management skillrequired in private banks and in the second year, specialization in these, disciplinesfollow.

Eligibility Criterion is the same as per MBA Program

The courses offered by the program are divided into the following three groups:

(a) Basic Skill Courses

These courses will provide the basic tools, techniques and skills that are employedby a bank in managing the various functions in business; these include statistics,quantitative methods, computer applications, and management communications.

(b) Functional Courses

These courses will develop knowledge, concepts and practices in the functional areasof banking. These will include courses in economics, finance, accounting, marketing,production, operations, organizational behaviour and business analysis and lawsaffecting the financial sector.

(c) General Courses

These courses will provide knowledge about some of the key variables in the externaland internal environment of the bank. These will include courses in the business,Islamic Banking, Business Policy and Human Resource Management, the history ofBusiness Development, Internal Business, Money Market Operations and ForeignExchange etc.

Executive Development Center (EDC)The Institute has its Executive Development Center (EDC) for imparting higher educationto the employed workforce. In congruence to the market demand EDC offers its servicesfor focused Training and development of professional executives.

EDC compliments DIHE’s degree courses such as marketing, finance, accounting,operations, IT, human resources and strategy, by offering courses and workshops ontopics such as Leadership Diploma (collaboration with The Institute for Leadershipand Global Education ILGE); Effective Strategic Planning, Leadership and EntrepreneurshipMethodology (Entrepreneurship Operating System™); Six Sigma; Project Management;and other programs that enable the participants to gain and refresh their knowledgeand to become effective organizational leaders.

EDC, in consultation with the faculty, designs course material relevant and theorganizational needs. Industry and business leaders are also invited as speakers duringprograms, to give insight on a topic relevant to the program.

These programs are highly dynamic and interactive. Multiple training methodologiesare used to enhance the learning experience such as use of case studies, role playexercises, and discussions.

1. MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

How to co-survive in a world epitomised by an exploding population, depletingconventional resources, and accelerating science and technology? There is an urgencyof effecting social mobilisation. As citizens of tomorrow, we need to build up ourcharacter. We require to train ourselves in sciences and professions. We want to ensurewe are duly equipped to play our part in the socio-economic existence of society.

An immediate implication of what precedes is ‘education is not a synonym for degree’.There is a larger sense. Education is the prime tool to help us wring socio-economicchange. With such a task ahead, it is crucially important to see that one lands on a‘right’ choice of field of study and, concomitantly, on a ‘good’ choice of educationalinstitution.

As for Dadabhoy Institute of Higher education (DIHE), she is characterised by hercommitment to marry rigorous academic preparation with practical need of studentsand the real world in which they can develop their strong interest into a stimulatingmarket-based career. 1. Prof. Dr. Jawaid Quamar

After his B.Sc. (Hons.) and M.Phil., he received Ph.D. for his work related to BlackHole models. As for his personal research and M.Phil. / Ph.D. level research supervisedby him, he has published a number of research papers, including more than twodozens of supervised papers. Earlier, he worked as Professor and Director in theResearch Institute of Space and Planetary Astrophysics, University of Karachi. Stillearlier on, he chaired Department of Mathematics, University of Karachi. He alsoheaded there the Program of Industrial and Business Mathematics. As regards scientificcontributions of Prof. Quamar, his doctoral dissertation is recognised as a highlyoriginal work and has been cited in numerous research papers, M.Phil. theses andPh.D. dissertations. In recognition of his other researches, he was offered a membershipof IAU, the most prestigious and largest world body in astronomy, astrophysics, earthsciences, and environmental studies. Apart from the distinction of having initiatednew research directions in several areas, Dr. Quamar has been responsible forintroducing new strands in the application of mathematical sciences. His currentinterests include modeling, dynamical systems analysis, nonlinear analysis, decisiontheory, and computational approaches. He is Professor and Dean in Faculty of Science,DIHE.

2. Prof. Dr. G. Q. Memon

He is a holder of degrees of B.E. from Pakistan and M.S. and Ph.D. from the Universityof Pittsburgh (U.S.A.). He started his professional career as an Assistant Director inWAPDA at Lahore. After his Ph.D., he worked for more than 4 years in Saudi Arabiaon a huge Engineering Information System consisting of Facilities Management System,Geographic Information System, Maintenance Management System and MasterPlanning. He also possesses extensive teaching experience, he having worked at SirSyed University and Hamdard University. He has recently joined DIHE as Professorand Associate Dean. Software Engineering Economics is one of his favourite subjects.

4. S. M. Ahmed Bari

After his B.Sc. (Hons.), he did an MCS from Department of Computer Science, Universityof Karachi. He is enrolled in M.Phil. leading to Ph.D. program. He has sufficientexperience of working in industry. He has more than sixteen years experience ofuniversity-level teaching. In DIHE, he is an Assistant Professor. His field of interest isModeling and Simulation.

4. Maqsood Razi

He holds the degrees of B.Sc. (University of Karachi), MBA (Dubai) and MS (CS) (PAF-KIET). His Ph.D. work in Computer Science is in progress in DIHE under the supervisionof Dr. Jawaid Quamar. He presented a research paper in the International Conferenceon Management and Technology held in March, 2007 under the auspices of GianGoyti Institute of Management and Technology, Chandigarh (India). He presentedanother research paper in the IEEE International Symposium on Biometrics and SecurityTechnologies held in April 2008 at Islamabad (Pakistan). The latter paper is based onhis Ph.D. work and it was declared as one of the two best papers in the area ofInformation Security presented in the Symposium. Outside academia, he worked asManager, MIS, in Datasoft Publishers and as Computer Programmer in DatasoftComputer Systems, involved in software development of local companies as well ascompanies of Dubai. Besides having worked in various capacities in local private andgovernment degree level institutions like Naval Academy (Pakistan Navy), BalochistanEngineering University (Khuzdar), etc. he worked in Somaliland (East Africa) as aLecturer in the degree-level institutions, University of Hargeisa (supported by UnitedNations Development Program and having collaboration with MIT, USA) and MercyAcademy of Higher Education. He works as an Assistant Professor of Computer Sciencein DIHE. His interests are Cryptography, Network Security, E-Commerce, and VisualProgramming.

5. S. M. Zeeshan Iqbal

He holds a degree of M.Sc. in Physics from University of Karachi and M.Sc. in Mobile,Personal and Satellite Communication from University of Westminster (UK). He hasan experience in teaching in organisations like Aligarh Institute of Technology, SirSyed University of Engineering and Technology, and London Business College (UK).He serves as an Assistant Professor, DIHE. Earlier on, he worked in the field ofRenewable Energy Resources in which he developed a Parabolic Trough SolarConcentrator. His other interests are advancement in ‘Physical Layer of UMTS’ andWireless Broadband Communication Network, with focus on Designing and Optimisationof WiMax.

6. S. Ali Imran

He is M.Sc. from the University of Karachi and his M.Phil. is in progress. He wasassociated with GroupSoft and Softec as a Lecturer in Mathematics and ComputerScience. As a System Analyst and Computer Programer, he has contributed to well-known Software Houses. He is a Lecturer in DIHE. For further education, he wishesto work in the field of Computer Programming, Modeling and Simulation.

7. Naheed Khan

She holds the degrees of M.Sc. (Software Development) from Huddersfield University(UK) and M.Sc. (Genetics) from the University of Karachi. She did some research workin Bioinformatics during her association with the Aga Khan University Hospital,Karachi, where she worked as an Assistant Research Officer. In DIHE, she is a Lecturer.

8. Nasir Danial

He has done his MCS from the University of Karachi. He recently wrote a researchpaper on ‘Computer Error Analysis’ under the supervision of Prof. Jawaid Quamar,paper on ‘Computer Error Analysis’ under the supervision of Prof. Jawaid Quamar,which he submitted for publication to a foreign journal of Computer Science. Heserved several educational institutions as faculty member prior to his appointment asLecturer in DIHE. His interests are Numerical Analysis, Algorithmic Analysis andadvanced Compilation Techniques.

9. M. Mansoor Niaz

He did his B.E. (Computer Systems) from Usman Institute of Technology, HamdardUniversity. He worked as a Lecturer in South City University, Technomen Institute andthe University of Karachi for the past five years. He recently joined DIHE as a Lecturer.

10. Zeeshan Alam Hashmi

He did MS in Computer Networks from SZABIST. He has over 3 years of experiencein Computer Networking. He served as Network Engineer in Real Time Technology,Dubai. He has been teaching as visiting faculty in PIMSAT. Presently he is teachingin DIHE.

11. Prof. Saeedur Rehman

After his education at Leeds (UK), he finally joined the Department of English, Universityof Karachi. Until recently, he has been a Professor of English there. He also chairedthe Department from time to time. Prof. Saeed is responsible for all English Languageprograms conducted in the Science School, DIHE.

12. Dr. Zulfiqar Ali

He has done an M.A. in Philosophy from the University of Karachi. Later, he completedhis Ph.D. also from the same university. He has a good deal of teaching experience,he having taught for years at the University of Karachi, PAF-KIET, etc. He works as anadjunct faculty in DIHE.

13. Arslan Khan

He has done Masters by Research in Artificial Intelligence from the University of EastLondon, UK in 1998. He was enrolled for Ph.D. studies at Oxford University, London,UK in the field of Artificial Intelligence in the area of Human Cognition where heworked on Modelling Intelligent Systems. Due to certain circumstances, he quit thedoctoral program after three years. As regards his experience, he has been activelyinvolved in Research and Development both at the academic and industrial levelscurrently, he is the CEO at UnHuman Productions. His research interests are directlyrelated to the fields of Human Cognition, Machine and Intelligence, Human ReproductiveDesigns for Machines, Society and Behaviour Designs, Automated Self-Healing andSimulation and Modelling. His experiences in the field of Computer Science motivatedhim to set up the first Private Sector R&D House in Pakistan, dedicated for ComputerScience. He is also part of visiting faculty at Karachi University and DIHE.

14. Irshad Hadi

3. ACADEMIC PROGRAMS:FACULTY OF SCIENCE

Introduction

Located at the Main Campus of DIHE, the Science School is housed in an area separatedfrom the rest of the Campus. It comprises a sizable building and a reasonably wide-open area amid the highly busy hub of Karachi. The offices of Faculty of Science,accommodation for faculty members, classrooms, and laboratories account for thebuilt-in structure of the building. Presently, there exist eight large enough classrooms;they all being well furnished and fully equipped with multimedia, overhead

projectors, air conditioners, etc. As regards laboratories, the faculty presently has foursensible Laboratories, designed with international expertise.

Program Structure and Entry Requirements

With 6 courses per semester generally, each BS degree program spans a period of 8semesters (4 years) as follows:

1st Year equivalent to Freshman2nd Year Sophomore3rd Year Junior4th Year Senior

The BS may be offered with or without a thesis in case of a thesis, it shall be normallysubmitted by the student after the completion of the Final Semester. As for a MastersProgram, its duration will be 4 semesters (2 years), plus two Short / Summer Semesterswith 4 courses per semester.

As regards requirements for entry into any degree program, the normal requirementfor registration in the BS Program is an Intermediate (Higher Secondary) Certificate,preferably with Science Group, or A-Level Certificate or equivalent from a recognisedBoard or other institution, while candidates will be eligible for admission in the MastersProgram if they have a B.Sc. / B.Com. / B.A. from a recognised university. But thisdoes not by itself guarantee an admission in the program. The strictly limited numberof seats will be offered to the best few from among the qualified applicants on acompetitive basis.

Four years ago, I came to DIHE for a number of reasons, mainly because it offered methe opportunity to work as a lecturer in a dynamic and vibrant environment that Ireally wanted to experience. On first impressions the building itself was not much tolook at, but opinions changed as time proceeded and the institute seemed like a greatplace to gain more knowledge and experiences. Had he not done so we would havebeen perpetually slave? As we know his Aligarh movement was nothing but concentratedefforts for the spread of education among the Muslims. Dadabhoy Foundation is aregistered non-commercial organisation that has been motivated to make contributionsin Cultural, Educational and Scientific Development of our society since 1982. Aseducation plays a critical role in such developments, Dadabhoy Foundation hasestablished an Institute to facilitate the delivery of Higher Education in Pakistan sincethe year 2000. A change for better and more knowledge is visible in many countries, includingPakistan. In this respect, educational institutions have a positive role to play and havea responsibility to perform in the domain of national uplift and welfare.

Now what is the overriding character of this change? The recent emergence of high-tech IT character of ever swelling number of Public and Private Sector enterprises hasincreased the need for advanced approaches largely based on new developments inthe Scientific Method and applications of such approaches. Specifically, the recentbang of things like Derivative Security Market, Financial Services and Insurance Sectorhas also created an unprecedented need for highly sophisticated mathematical practiceswithin industries and markets. In particular, with new Financial Services appearingin Pakistan's Market every year, it is essential for university graduates to understandthe dynamic and random nature of Pakistan's financial and monetary markets. Therefore,more and more of Private and Public Sector Companies recognise that having a leadingedge over others in the field in an increasingly complex milieu is possible only withthe help of Advanced Methods, which are, to a large extent, based on a levelheaded''Mathematical Grooming''. This change in attitude towards Mathematics as afundamental ingredient in the evolution of contemporary societies leads to an increasingdemand for human capital which has a broad knowledge of scientific and computationaltechniques and the ability to use these on problems faced in industry and business.

Again, mathematical practices within industries and markets go by the familiar genericdesignation of ''Applied Mathematics''. As is well known, this is a field which servesas a bridge between ''Scientific Theories'' and the ''Real World Problems''. Among ahost of its applications, a new specialisation comprises the acquisition of a workingknowledge of models and procedures of ''Modern Mathematical Finance''. The highlyattractive aspect of this area is that as an Applied Mathematical Discipline it plays acentral role in current developments in its domain of application. Besides treatingStandard Methods, this focuses on the Development of New Methods and theirapplication to real-time data, to be able to cope with ''Future Trends'' in a volatile andstochastic environment.

Manifestly, the aforementioned change asks us to teach emerging science andtechnologies rather than the courses offered by traditional departments withinUniversities. Thus the inception of the program of Financial Engineering (FE) as anundergraduate degree scheme in ''Modern Financial Mathematics ComputationalFinance''. As just indicated, this scheme of studies aims at providing a milieu withinwhich the student can develop an appreciation and understanding of the (i) new theoryand practice in mathematico-physical disciplines and (ii) principles behind the''Dynamical Systems'' of Finance, Economy, Environment, Industry, and similar otherprocesses / phenomena which are fast moulding the Banking Sector, Money Markets,Industr ial Development, etc. indigenously and around the globe.

Particularly, the study envisages the illustration of types of complex measurementsand analysis which can be achieved with simulated environment by using standardindustrial packages and related software. The prime objective would be to induce instudents the logic to think critically and produce solutions. There is, clearly, a strongemphasis on the use of computers at every appropriate stage. At the same time, studentswill get here a real opportunity to learn the techniques of effective communication,leadership, and negotiation which requires a firm development environment to aidthe research and innovation in the above disciplines / fields.

1. Electronics & Communication

The modern society is increasingly reliant on Electronics and Communication. Thereis, thus, a great demand for professionals in areas such as:

- Robotics- VLSI- Optical Fibre- Telecommunication- Satellite Communication- 3G-Communication- Remote Sensing- Global Positioning

This requires a radical approach to education in Electronics and Communication,extending beyond the theoretical underpinnings to studies emphasising industry-relevant courses.

Keeping this in view, DIHE currently offers an 8-Semester (4-Year) Bachelor’s degreeprogram in Electronics and Communication (EC). This BS (EC) degree consists ofgeneral education, mathematics, business foundation, Electronics and Communicationcore and elective courses and a thesis / project. Each student is required to successfullycomplete a minimum of 132 credit hours for the award of degree. A student may alsobe required to take remedial / foundation non-credit course to improve mathematicalbackground. Therefore, as indicated above, employment prospects for students whoqualify for our BS (EC) degree are excellent and can look forward to varied andinteresting careers within the country and outside Pakistan.

1. COMPUTER SCIENCE

The field of Computer Science (CS) spans a wide range of studies, from its theoreticalfoundations to latest developments in robotics, computer vision, intelligent systems,bioinformatics, etc. A very important aspect of CS is that of developing effective waysto solve computing problems. The study of algorithms enables one to develop newproblem-solving approaches which provide better solutions. Using the techniques ofAutomata, CS allows developing compilers with the best efficiency and speed. Someof other major tasks CS tries to handle are developing the best possible ways to storeinformation in databases, sending data over networks, and displaying complex images.Also, the field of AI and robotics are attempts to create systems which can demonstrateintelligence, and create new knowledge and use it to do new things. We require toscale and gauge the true scope of CS. This is particularly true of developing countrieslike Pakistan, where many a direction is yet to be set from the viewpoint of TechnologyTransfer or, rather, Science Transfer!

1. INTRODUCTION

Apart from running its various undergraduate degree programs, DIHE also strives tobe one of the active research universities. Presently, the Faculty of Science offers the2-year M.Phil. / MS program, 3-year M.Phil. / Ph.D. program and 3-year Ph.D. programin all disciplines of computing (such as Modeling and Simulation, Computer Science,Software Engineering and Information Technology).

The experience of attempts at introducing research in universities of Pakistan showsthat research candidates often waste their time in the name of course work especially,in the sense that after completing the course work, no faculty member is ready toaccept the candidate under his / her Supervision for one reason or the other, andconsequently the candidate happens to abandon the research study or, at the worst,get a degree without any kind of actual research. To circumvent this problem, acandidate shall not be admitted in a Research Program in the Science School unlessa suitable Supervisor is available for him / her right at the time of admission in anyof the above Research Programs.

2. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

(i) The holders of a 4-year undergraduate degree from a recognised universityshall be eligible for admission in the M.Phil. / MS Program.

(ii) The holders of a 2-year graduate degree of M.Phil. / MS from a recogniseduniversity shall be eligible for admission in the Ph.D. program.

(iii) On the recommendation of the Research Supervisor, the holders of 4-yearundergraduate degree from a recognised university can be deemed eligiblefor admission in the M.Phil. / Ph.D. program.

(iv) Moreover, the admission shall be granted only after the applicant has passeda GRE-type test from DIHE or any other institution of university level.

3. STRUCTURE OF PROGRAMS

(I) M.Phil. / MS Degree

The M.Phil. program will normally be spread over a minimum period of 4 semesters(2 years). Generally, the first two semesters will comprise course work. Students arerequired to complete 8 courses of 24 credit hours (see the Section entitled ‘CourseWork’ given below). The research work may be had simultaneously or taken up afterthe first two semesters. Apart from the course work, the MS candidate shall have tosatisfactorily complete a Research Project of 6 credit hours, while the M.Phil. candidateshall have to satisfactorily complete a Thesis of 9 credit hours.

(II) Ph.D. Degree

[A] The Ph.D. program will normally comprise a 54-credit hour program spread overa minimum period of 6 semesters (3 years). Generally, the first semester will comprisecourse work comprising 4 papers of 3 credit hours each (see the Section entitled‘Course Work’ given below). The research work may be had simultaneously or takenup in the remaining semesters. Apart from the course work, the Ph.D. candidate shallhave to satisfactorily complete a Research Work of 36 Credit Hours.

[B] A candidate may offer an M.Phil. / Ph.D. Program spread over a minimum periodof 8 semesters (4 years). If the research during the first two years of this program is

satisfactory, the candidate may be awarded an M.Phil. degree and allowed to continueas a Ph.D. candidate [in the sense of paragraph (i) immediately above], without goingafresh for formalities of admission required for admission in the Ph.D. program.

[C] Credit Hour Distribution

(i) After having done the 2-year graduate degree of M.Phil. / MS, a candidateshall have to undertake a study with the following structure of credit hours:

Course Work: 18 credit hours (6 Courses)Research Work: 36 credit hoursTotal: 54 credit hours

(ii) After having done the 4-year undergraduate degree of BS, a candidate shallhave to undertake a study with the following structure of credit hours:

Course Work for M.Phil. / MS: 24 credit hours (8 Courses)Course Work for Ph.D.: 12 credit hours (4 Courses)Research Work: 36 credit hoursTotal: 72 credit hours

It may be noted that Ph.D. course work credits may be implemented via selection ofa particular mode of course execution (as recommended by the respective Supervisor)from the various available approaches, including guided, taught, seminar, andindependent research studies.

(III) Comprehensive Exam

At the completion of the course work, the candidate will be required to pass acomprehensive examination.

(IV) Thesis and Defence

[A] Thesis Evaluation

The research thesis shall be evaluated by the experts in the area of the respectiveresearch.

(i) For M.Phil. thesis, there shall be at least one evaluator from local universities.(ii) For Ph.D. thesis, there shall be at least two evaluators from universities of

international repute.

[B] Thesis Defence

The research student shall be required to defend his / her work after positive evaluationby experts. The degree shall be awarded on the successful defence of the particularthesis research work.

4. COURSE WORK

(i) An M.Phil. student can choose anyone of Parts (a)-(c) listed under CORE coursesfor M.Phil. / Ph.D. program appended below, and one course each from theremaininG two Parts of the CORE courses for M.Phil. / Ph.D. program. In addition,the student has to choose two courses from the List of Elective Courses.

1. Aims and Objectives

Pakistan has produced many eminent engineers. But this achievement has not yieldeda continuous surge in the average level of productivity in business organisations. Thishas been due to the absence of certain supporting levels in the process of production/ output generation / value addition. Pakistan is in dire need of engineers who havehands-on work experience to enhance the level of productivity. Economists haveestimated that in Pakistan, the total factor productivity is less than one in productivesectors. In developed countries the total factor productivity is more than one, and isever increasing. This phenomenon can be actualised in developing countries such asPakistan by rapidly increasing engineering manpower at lower middle & middle levelsof profession.

Recognising this need of the productive sectors of the economy, DIHE has formulatedprofessional level degree programs for the sub-engineers so as to enable them toperform as working professional engineers. After acquiring the B.Tech. (Hons.) degrees,the sub-engineers would not only be able to obtain elevated professional status, butthey would also contribute in enhancing the productivity of their subordinates andsuperior colleagues as well. The applications of engineering designs in the relevantfields are practically carried out by technologists. The objective of DIHE is to providetechnical personnel to meet the growing demands of the country. DIHE has kept upthe pace with changes and advances in technical education, maintaining its prominentposition. The important fact, worth-mentioning, is that the technologists who have sofar completed their courses here are consumed in the related industries and organizations,and are effectively accomplishing their assignments. According to one estimate, thenumber of Engineering Technologists should be three or four times the engineersworking as white-collar professionals in the country. In this backdrop, the demand forB.Tech. (Pass) and B.Tech. (Hons.) runs into several hundred thousands for theforthcoming decade.

2. B.Tech. (Pass) Program

1. Introduction

B.Tech. (Pass) degree candidates will be provisionally admitted in the first semesterB.Tech. (Pass) course and will undergo supervised guided training in the industry fora period of one year (i.e. 1st, 2nd and 3rd semester), subject to the requirements. Eachstudent will make an experience record book which should be daily signed by thesupervisory level of industry and should submit the same to DIHE, on the 10th of everymonth.

Students must successfully complete course work for six semesters (two years) for theaward of a B.Tech. (Pass) degree. In addition to the requirements for the earned credits,a cumulative GPA of minimum 2.0 for all bachelor degree programs on a scale of 0.0-4.0 must be attained.

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN:

In these days of light and knowledge, the acquisition of proper training and educationin different fields of human endeavor can hardly be over emphasized. Many strideshave been taken in science and technology, social science disciplines, arts andhumanities. It is an ever-growing phenomenon and needs constant efforts and endeavorto keep abreast with the changing conditions of contemporary societies. Differentsocial sciences are interrelated; yet, law and jurisprudence play an important part inunraveling the hidden treasures of knowledge and wisdom by its threadbare reasoningand analytical approach.

The level of competitiveness and professionalism has increased manifolds. Amongstthe various professions, law is the most dynamic, ranging from problems of everydaylife to the most complex ones. Banking, Corporate, Taxation, Tortuous liabilities, LaborLaw and Industrial relations, Contract, Mercantile Law, Equity and Muslim PersonalLaw all require in-depth study of problems of day to day life. There is doubtless needto study modern principles of jurisprudence and also the new fangled doctrine ofnecessity, in the Administration of Law. State makes it incumbent on the student toequip themselves with up-to-date knowledge of law in wider horizon and perspective.

Furthermore, the proposition of New World Order and the inherent implication of“Globalisation”, WTO (World Trade Organization), other ramification involved in itrequire deeper studies of comparative legal system of the present endeavour. Thismight well change the entire socio economic structure of the contemporary societywith far reaching consequences in not too distant a future. In particular, this mightentail drastic changes in Common Law and Jurisprudence. Some part of Law mayhave to be re-written, modified and changed. As such the students have to be gearedto develop the critical faculty and hard work to inculcate the habit of understandingthe norms and ramifications of Law in its application to the cases conducted in court.For the attainment of this objective and to prepare disciplined and devoted class ofstudents, there is the obvious need to lay more emphasis on teaching of law and itsimportance in combating the crime and social evils rampant in society.

It would be as well to point out that Dadabhoy Institute of Higher Education (DIHE)in consideration of the need of the time and with the sprit of service and dedication

established the department of law beginning 2003 to prepare students for a three yearLLB degree program. It is gratifying to say now that since then two batches of studentshave already graduated and third batch is currently in session. To accelerate furtherpace of progress in the field of law, to some short certificate courses in Company Law,Secretarial Practices and labour law have been added under the new program ofstudies.

Further, it would be appropriate to highlight the addition of two years specialized PostGraduate course of study (LL.M.) in the current session.

This would enable the students to learn and work hard in congenial atmosphere andenvironment. A well-equipped library containing material related to Law has beenprovided to acquire proper knowledge and creative ability to be trained as a lawyer.A team of well-trained lawyers and specialist in Law and related fields of Knowledgeare invited from time to time to develop student’s vision and personality.

Administrative Staff

1. Adnan Qazi Ali - Registrar

Mr. Adnan Qazi Ali who presently serves as the Registrar in DIHE is a British nationalwho came into Pakistan in 1999. After attainment of his School and College educationin London, Adnan did his Masters from University of Glamorgan in UK. After retiringfrom the Royal Air Force in UK he immigrated to Pakistan and joined the BritishCouncil where he was commissioned to take national charge of “Education UK” asthe Country Director. Adnan’s considerable experience in education continues throughDirectorship of the southern region with Beaconhouse Informatics and then designand implementation of US AID funded program for 20,000 primary school teachersin Sindh.

2. Prof. Hasnain Kazmi – Director Islamic Research Center

Prof. Hasnain Kazmi joined DIHE as Vice Chancellor / Rector. Presently he is doingresearch work in the Islamic Research Center of DIHE. He is a well know scholar. Hedid his Masters in Islamic History and in Urdu from the University of Karachi in 1954and 1957 respectively. He is a longstanding educationist and prior to joining DIHE,he remained associated with college education for about 39 years. He remainedmember of Karachi University Syndicate as representative of College Principle andvarious academic bodies of Karachi University and Karachi Board of IntermediateEducation. He has been regularly conducting different programs on PTV and other TVchannels. He is also famous in print media for his articles which are published fromtime to time on current affairs. He has authored of 3 books namely; 1)‘Rah aur Roshni’,a book on Quranic Teaching, 2) ‘Manzil Pakistan’, a book on Pakistan Movement and3) Tahrik-e-Pakistan Ki Taassurati Tarikh’, a book on Pakistan movement.

3. Lt. Col. (R) Muhammad Ayaz Ansari – Director Public Affairs

He holds Bachelors Degree and has done various professional courses including one-year certificate course in Management & Computer Science from Quaid-e-AzamUniversity, Islamabad and GHQ Psychological Operations Course in which he scoredfirst position and was awarded commendation certificate.

During his association with Pakistan Army, he held various staff and independentCommand appointments including Administrator of an Army / Combined MilitaryHospital (CMH) for three years. He also served in Inter- Services Intelligence, Islamabadfor more than eight years. He also worked as a member Judge in special Military CourtLahore Fort for more than two years. Prior to his employment at DIHE, he worked asa GM in several renowned organizations and also as a Principal Secretary to WorldChairman, International Human Rights Commission (IHRC). He joined DIHE as Registrar/ General Manager (Project and Administration) in 2000. Presently he is working asa Director (Public Affairs) at DIHE.

4a. Shahbaz Ali Baig - Director EDC

He is currently working as Director Executive Development Centre in DIHE. He didhis MBA from University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh after doing BBA from the sameUniversity.

Mr. Baig holds a vast experience in IT and Marketing as he served GeneralElectric (Health Care), Milwaukee, USA as Quality Assurance Manager, PMOand Six Sigma Specialist, IT Program Manager and IT Business IntelligenceManager.

Before joining DIHE he was serving Habib Bank Limited as HR-Training andDevelopment Strategist and Head of Quality Assurance.

4b. Lt. Col (R). Wasim Raza Khan - Associate DirectorNorth Nazimabad Campus

MSc. in Chemistry and Masters in Educational Administration by education,he holds extensive professional experience in Pakistan Army by also headingits different academies. After retirement he joined DIHE as Registrar andpresently serving as Associate Director North Nazimabd Campus of the Institute.

5. Syed Mateen Haider - Deputy Registrar

He is currently working as Deputy Registrar in DIHE. He did his M.A. in Englishfrom University of Karachi after doing B.A. in English from the same University.

Mr. Haider holds a vast experience in the field of education as he has servedas the Hamdard University as Deputy Registrar, Assistant Controller ofExamination at Board of Intermediate Education, Karachi, Lecturer of Englishat Defence Degree College.

6. Owais M. Khan Afridi – Program Manager

He has done his Masters in Business Administration. He worked as an OverseasConsultant for Forex Management and Consultants. His present assignmentat HIDE is to handle and manage the Department of Evening ProgramCoordination.

7. Ejaz Nabi Buksh – Accounts Officer

He did his B. Com from Karachi University. He has completed his Article-ship(C.A) from Moosa & Co. Chartered Accountants. Prior to his employment inDIHE, he worked as a Chief Accountant at Concept One (Pvt.) Ltd., and asSenior Auditor in Moosa & Company Chartered Accountants.

8. Syed Najmul Zafar – Network Administrator

He holds Bachelors Degree in Science from Karachi University and is alsoenrolled in MBA-MIS program in DIHE. He has also done various professionaland technical certifications like MCSE, A+ Certification, Cisco Modules Coursesetc. Prior to his employment, he worked as a Network Engineer in City SoftComputers.

9. Aneela Mansoor – Admission Officer

She is a Bachelor of Science (Biology). She has an uninterrupted experiencein the educational field and has remained associated with the administration
