Dear 4-H Families, We are continually being encouraged in 4-H to show our young people the importance of including applications of science, engineering, and technology in their everyday life. The practical, “hands-on” learning that we do in 4-H naturally incorporates many aspects of science, engineering, and technology. It is easy to take for granted the complexities of many of the lessons and projects that 4-H members complete. It is not as easy to remember that each lesson learned is a building block full of potential for further exploration and discovery. Exploration and discovery is the heart of the 4-H learning process. The individual nature of so many projects, even as a part of a broader project area, gives each member the opportunity to ask questions, to try new ideas, and to express their own creativity. Asking questions and trying new ideas is part of exploring. Expressing creativity is a part of discovery. Analyzing the results of exploring new ideas is the next step in discovery. Throughout this 4-H year, busy 4-H members have participated in many activities to encourage exploration and discovery. At this time of the year, many projects have been completed, and it will be time for the county fair before we know it. The fair is probably the greatest opportunity for all 4-H members to exhibit, or demonstrate, the exploration and discovery that they have done for themselves this year. Exhibiting, whether it be small projects, or livestock, gives each member the opportunity to show the judges, their parents, their project leaders, other members, and the visiting public what they have learned about each project as they studied to gain knowledge in the subject area, and as they did the “hands on” part of the project. For many of us the biggest challenge is when we are called upon to describe what we designed or created, what we learned by doing this, and maybe some of the considerations we went through to decide upon and then complete the finished product. Each member needs to have the opportunity to show what they have explored, and an opportunity to share what they have discovered. Dear 4-H Families

We are continually being encouraged in 4-H to show our young people

the importance of including applications of science engineering and

technology in their everyday life The practical ldquohands-onrdquo learning that

we do in 4-H naturally incorporates many aspects of science

engineering and technology It is easy to take for granted the

complexities of many of the lessons and projects that 4-H members

complete It is not as easy to remember that each lesson learned is a

building block full of potential for further exploration and discovery

Exploration and discovery is the heart of the 4-H learning process The

individual nature of so many projects even as a part of a broader project

area gives each member the opportunity to ask questions to try new

ideas and to express their own creativity Asking questions and trying

new ideas is part of exploring Expressing creativity is a part of

discovery Analyzing the results of exploring new ideas is the next step in

discovery

Throughout this 4-H year busy 4-H members have participated in many

activities to encourage exploration and discovery At this time of the

year many projects have been completed and it will be time for the

county fair before we know it The fair is probably the greatest

opportunity for all 4-H members to exhibit or demonstrate the

exploration and discovery that they have done for themselves this year

Exhibiting whether it be small projects or livestock gives each member

the opportunity to show the judges their parents their project leaders

other members and the visiting public what they have learned about each

project as they studied to gain knowledge in the subject area and as they

did the ldquohands onrdquo part of the project For many of us the biggest

challenge is when we are called upon to describe what we designed or

created what we learned by doing this and maybe some of the

considerations we went through to decide upon and then complete the

finished product Each member needs to have the opportunity to show

what they have explored and an opportunity to share what they have

discovered

Clover Kids Corner

Through Clover Kids clubs children learn how to get along share and

that Clover Kids leaders can use in planning and implementing

experiences that introduce five to seven-year olds to the 4-H concept of

learning by doing

How Strong Is an Egg

Hens lay eggs and sit on them They also turn the eggs several times a day to keep the baby chicks from

sticking to the inside of the shell The egg shell must be strong enough to support the henrsquos weight but thin

enough to let the chick break it and get out

According to Ohio State University Extension Chick Quest teacher guide ldquothe dome shape gives an egg

incredible strengthhellipIt can support a heavy load because the weight is evenly distributed both horizontally and

vertically When a load is placed on top of it (like a chicken sitting on it) the heaviness is carried down along

the curved walls to a wide baserdquo

Materials

Two egg cartons

Four eggs

Hard-backed books

Scissors

Instructions

1 Use scissors to cut the flap and lid off both egg cartons and discard them

2 Set the remaining (bottom part) of the egg cartons side by side

3 Place two eggs in each carton equal distances apart Since the books will sit on top of the eggs use a book to

estimate and adjust the distance between the eggs Each egg should support the weight of one corner of the

book

4 Ask the children how many books they think the eggs will support without breaking

5 Stack the books on top of the eggs

6 Discuss the results How many books could you place on top of the eggs before they broke

7 Will hard cooked eggs hold more or less weight than fresh eggs Repeat this experiment with hard cooked eggs
