Dagenham Parklands is a proposal for an urban park along the north bank of the Thames, built around the warehouses and factories of the docks. The parklands are part of a regional strategic plan to re-establish London as a city for innovation. A technologies park focusing on health and lifesciences will draw in new businesses and residents. The project will benefit local people who will have access to a variety of recreation and sports facilities. As well as reconnecting Dagenham with the Thames waterfront, the parklands will act as an ecological and cultural corridor between London City Airport and Rainham Marshes. 1. London Bioscience Park - Brings together research organisations in one location. It will offer opportunities for start-ups as well as established companies, with a focus on life sciences. It will work in close collaboration with universities to advance entrepreneurship. It will also stimulate regional development and contribute to the local area through partnership with Dagenham parklands. 2. Central Meeting Space - Performs public and private functions. Existing rail track and jetty link users to the rest of the park. By the time the park is completed, Dagenham Ford Factory will have been dismantled, but with portions retained and curated as the setting for the central space. It will be entirley adaptable to meet the needs of the public, for festivals or sports events, or the private users affiliated with the bioscience park, who can make use of its public frontage for educational events, conferences and exhibitions. 3. The Landfill - After capping, the landfill will become recreational space for cycling, mountain biking and running. Look out points will be located on both of the prominent mounds with information on the landfill's history with maps and telescopes. The existing jetty will become a terminal in the new ferry network. Waterways running north-south split the park into patches. Within this framework the vegetation defines fixed spaces in the west for permanent programs such as sports facilities and flexible spaces in the east for food growing, art installations and other temporary programs. As the water slows down towards the mouths of each waterway, visitors can explore a variety of wetland gardens. Each will have a distinct character and function. Some will be open to tidal flooding, others will detain water to create pond habitats. Dagenham Parklands Development scenario 2035 London City Airport. 4km south-west. Footpath and Cycleway.
