How do we choose?By Lynn Berg

There are so many events going on at once atan NABC. How should you choose which ones to

play in? You mightbegin by thinking whyyou are here: to win asmany masterpoints aspossible? To bechallenged? To trynew things?

If your mainobjective is to winpoints, you’reprobably better offstaying in the I/Nevents, which havelower masterpoint

limits. Of course, you received fewer points forwinning or placing in limited events, but thecompetition is not as tough.

You will usually earn more points winning inthe C stratum (or on a great day even a higherstrat!) of an open event, but your chances ofwinning are not as great. This is a decision you andyour partner will have to make. Remember, the I/Nsections will play at a slightly more leisurely pacewith less stress. You will see that there are a fewevents for which you are not eligible, such as theLife Master Pairs and some other national eventsthat require pre-qualification. The NABC offersevents at all levels every day!

Do you want to play one session or two?Nearly every scheduled session will have what arecalled “side games.” These are single-sessionevents for players who don’t want too long a day,or who want a break. You can play morning andevening and take off the afternoon for sightseeing,if that’s what you like.

If you play in an Open Side Game Series, thereare overall awards available if you play in morethan one session of the same series. Your top twogames are kept for the comparison to determineoverall winners, so if you play in three or moresessions, you get to count your best finishes. If you

have won some masterpoints inmore than two sessions, you getto keep all of the points, ofcourse.

There are three types ofevents going on most days: One-and two-session pairs games, knockout teams and Swissteams. The means of decidingwho plays who varies, dependingon the type of event. All pairsevents are stratified, whether I/Nor open. The limits of the strataare posted, and you have to tellthe person selling the entrieswhich stratum you’re buying. Ifyou make an error, the computerwill tell the director posting theentries.

There’s no point in buying aB or A entry if you are a C. In anstratified event, you competeagainst all levels during the play, and at the end of the session youare first compared to your ownstratum, then to higher ones. TheA players must beat everyone. The B players have tooutperform the other B and Cplayers, and if they beat the Aplayers as well, they get the Amasterpoints. The C players have to beat only theother Cs to get some points, but they can win bigand get the B or A points.

Knockouts are multi-session events if you keepwinning. Don’t sign up for a knockout unless youwill be able to attend if you keep winning. You payfor the event one session at a time. KOs are theonly event where the points of all four teammembers are totaled to place your team. There isno stratification, and the limits of your bracket in aknockout are determined by who shows up. If yourbracket has 16 teams and you win the first roundbut lose the second, there may be a playoffavailable. Again, points are more limited in thelower brackets.

Swiss teams are stratified like pairs games, usually based on the point holdings of the personwith the most points. Swiss teams are popularbecause you have more chances to winmasterpoints. In a pairs game, the top 40% of thefield wins points. In a KO, you have to win a 24-board match to win points. In a Swiss, if there arefour rounds in the session, you have four chancesto win points. There are match awards as well asoverall winners.

An NABC is a good chance to venture out ofyour comfort zone. You have a great opportunity totry something new.

Opening lead: ♥K.Bidding commentary: West does better in

the long run to make a weak jump overcall (3♥)holding a powerful six-card suit and lacking anoutside king or ace. A simple two-level overcallshould have at least an outside ace or king.Using up bidding space with weak jumpovercalls makes it that much harder for theopponents to untangle their riches.

Defensive commentary: When dummytables with a relatively strong side suit plus ashort side suit, the defense has to decide

whether the long suit is likely to be usable or not.East knows that dummy’s diamonds, outside ofthe ace, are not usable. Translation: This dummyis good only for ruffing hearts. Additionally, Eastmust consider the likelihood of West having onlysix hearts at this vulnerability. If so, South hasthree hearts. Another inference: When East sees10 diamonds between his hand and dummy, thenormal division of the other three diamonds is2—1. If West had the singleton diamond, heprobably would have led it, so East assumesSouth has the singleton diamond, making it evenmore likely that he has three hearts.

East must overtake the ♥K and shift to a

trump. West cannot switch to a trump withoutgiving up his spade trick. After East overtakesand switches to a spade, if South finesses, Westwins and returns a spade and South is down atleast two.

If South rises with the ♠A and ruffs a heart, subsequent good defense defeats the contract atleast one trick. If East fails to overtake, or if Eastovertakes and leads a club, declarer can make 4♠by ruffing two hearts in dummy. The defendershave to realize that any club tricks they havecoming are not going anywhere. It’s the hearttricks that can be lost.

Kovachev knew that his partner must be able toruff a spade, and presumably held what he hopedwould be a second trick somewhere. However, declarer had jumped to slam without usingBlackwood, which strongly suggested he held avoid somewhere. That figured to be in Valio's otherlong suit, clubs.

So after some soul searching Valio led adiamond - and declarer's goose was cooked.

He won the diamond lead and cashed tworounds of trumps. When they failed to break 2-2declarer took a third round, cashed dummy's topspades and the ♦A. West was known to be down totwo spades and one club so declarer attempted tothrow West in with a club. That was two downwhen East took the last three tricks with the ♣A K Q - and 17 IMPs for ignoring Lightner.

Squeeze aficionados may note that on a non-diamond lead, 6♥ can always be made via a criss-cross ruffing squeeze against East.

Grand National Teams Flights B and C were earnedin local-level events earlier this year.

Flight B winners will have their namesengraved on the Sheinwold Trophy while the namesof Flight C winners will be engraved on the MacNab Trophy.

Alfred SheinwoldAlfred Sheinwold

(1912-1997) was oneof the greatest bridgewriters in the historyof the game. He wasinducted into theBridge Hall of Famein 1996.

His syndicatedbridge column was

considered by many to be the best --- he had aknack for getting his point across to even the leastexperienced players. He managed this by makingsure that every column had only one main point, marking it easier for his readers to focus.

"You could read a Sheinwold column and knowin an instant that nobody else could have written it,"said Frank Stewart, co-author of the column. "Heenlightened and entertained players through sevendecades and earned millions of fans."

Sheinwold was an editor of The Bridge Worldfrom 1934 to 1963 and editor of The BridgeBulletin from 1953 to 1958. He was also the authorof perhaps the most successful bridge book everwritten, 5 Weeks to Winning Bridge, a book thatsold in the millions.

Sheinwold served as chairman of the ACBLLaws Commission from 1964 to 1975, as chairmanof the appeals committees at NABCs and aschairman of the ACBL Board of Governors from1970 to 1973. He was named ACBL HonoraryMember of the Year in 1983.

Robin Mac NabRobin Mac Nab (1915-1985) served as a

Convention Center is the HubThe Convention Center is the hub of the action.

The dinner routes will generally operateindependently from the hotel service. So, considerthe Convention Center a transfer point if you wantto get to both destinations. Important: TheConvention Center loading and unloading point isthe Commerce Street entrance.

LP Field ParkingIf not staying downtown, you can park in Lot

A / B at the Titans stadium lot at LP Field. This isan existing service for people who work downtown, and is available for us during the tournament.

Just check in with the security guard. Cost isgenerally free, but if the lot fills, the overflow lot is$1. They have an existing shuttle service that costs$1 each way. Look for the bright yellow Park Itbus.

There is a change, however, from previousinformation published (web site, etc.). They willnot be altering their route during the tournament. The nearest stops to the convention center are 4th& Church (Courtyard by Marriott) where you cantransfer to our hotel shuttle service. Or, you canexit at the next stop, 3rd and Commerce. Both stopsare about two blocks away, but 3rd and Commerceis generally uphill.

The yellow shuttle service runs from 7 a.m. to6:30 p.m. Return service is from either of theaforementioned stops. The frequency is normallyevery 20 minutes, but every 10 minutes at peak, from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

After 6:30 p.m. use the Downtown Dinnerroute, and ask the driver to drop you off at LPField. After 10 p.m., request service from either thedriver of either the Minibus or the Passenger Van asthey stand or stop at the Convention Center.

Important – this parking option is notavailable on either Sunday or the second Saturday. If you are staying at the Ramada Ltd., call Mr.Wilson (the day before, please) for a transportationappointment at 615-525-7024.
