BISSO MARINE LAUNCHES THREE VESSELS Bisso Marine, a premier provider of energy and maritime support services, successfully launched three vessels in two recent projects. Using the D/B CAPPY BISSO, a Bisso Marine crew of six launched the M/V YELLOWFIN and the M/V BLUEFIN in Lockport, La. The two ocean-going tugs each weighs 520 tons. The operation was particularly challenging because the 700-ton CAPPY BISSO had to be towed through Bayou Lafourche, which can be as shallow as 6 feet in some areas.

In the second launch project, Bisso Marine used the D/B LILI BISSO to launch the new push boat COON WISE in St. Rose, La. The six-man crew spent about a day launching the 155-ton push boat, which was situated about 80 feet from the edge of the Mississippi River. Since 1890, Bisso Marine has provided quality services to the marine and energy industries, offering marine construction, pipe laying, salvage, heavy lift and diving services. With offices and strategic alliances located across the Gulf Coast, South America, Europe and Asia, the Bisso Marine fleet is uniquely positioned to provide a full range of maritime services and emergency response across the globe. Turkish Ship Owner Negotiating Ransom With Somali Pirates

The owner of a Turkish ship seized off Somalia was negotiating with pirates on a ransom to secure the release of the vessel and its 23-man Turkish crew, a company lawyer said Thursday. "It has become routine to hold talks on a ransom deal in incidents of piracy, and we are also negotiating with the pirates," Nilgun Yamaner, who represents Istanbul-based Horizon Shipping, told AFP. She declined to reveal the sum sought by the kidnappers and added: "Our priority is to secure the safe return of the crew to Turkey." The Horizon 1 was currently anchored at the port of Eyl in northern Somalia's breakaway Puntland region. Two Turkish frigates, deployed with international anti-piracy forces in the region, were awaiting in international waters as their mandate prevented them from sailing into territorial waters, Yamaner said. The Horizon 1 was seized July 8 when it was sailing from Saudi Arabia to Jordan with 33,000 cubic meters of sulphide. Pirate attacks on shipping off Somalia and in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean have escalated since last year. Last year, three Turkish vessels were hijacked in the Gulf of Aden, with the last of them being released in February. Source: AFP

Yemen charges 22 Somalis with piracy in Gulf of Aden

Twenty-two Somali men appeared before a court in the southern Yemeni port city of Aden on Wednesday to face charges of piracy and attempted piracy in the Gulf of Aden. Prosecutors told the court the defendants were handed over to Yemen after they were arrested in two groups by Indian and Russian Navy ships in the Gulf of Aden in December 2008 and February 2009. They said that 12 of the suspects were arrested by an Indian warship on December 13 after they commandeered a Yemeni fishing dhow in the Gulf of Aden and took 12 Yemeni fishermen hostage. According to the charge sheet, the suspects used the boat to attack an Ethiopian merchant vessel about 160 nautical miles east of the Aden port before

they were captured. The other 10 suspects were captured by a Russian Navy ship on February 12 as they attempted to attack an Iranian fishing ship off the Yemeni island of Socotra in the Indian Ocean, prosecutors said. All the defendants denied the charges against them. Under the Yemeni Counter-Abduction Law, the defendants could receive jail sentences ranging from five to 10 years if convicted. A Yemeni lawyer defending the 22 suspects said the charges were "fake" and that the defendants were merely fishermen. Piracy in the Gulf of Aden has surged in recent months as Somalia descends further into chaos and the ineffectual central government continues to squabble rather than govern. A total of 130 attacks took place in the Gulf of Aden and east coast of Somalia in the first half of 2009, according to the London- based International Maritime Bureau. (dpa)

Newbuilds likely to continue to depress North Sea market

Broker Offshore Shipbrokers Ltd (OSL) says that, looking at upcoming vessel deliveries there are still an extremely large number of both PSVs and AHTS under construction. Looking at the remainder of 2009 we expect to see some 56 PSVs (>2000dwt) due for delivery and 28 AHTS (>160 tonnes BP), with 2010 looking no better with 78 PSVs

Page 6: DAILY COLLECTION OF MARITIME PRESS CLIPPINGS 2009 – 195newsletter.maasmondmaritime.com/pdf/2009/195-17-07-2009.pdf · If you don't like to receive this bulletin anymore, kindly

and 41 AHTS. "Though it is fair to say that some of these vessels will already have charters in place and many others are probably not suited to the North Sea, there will still be a good number that will arrive on the Spot market. Given that the market has already softened significantly and with demand looking to fall even further, additional tonnage joining the markets during 2009 and 2010 will certainly not help any sort of market recovery," OSL concluded in its latest monthly report on the market. Sea-jacked dhow free MSV NEFYA (aka NEFEYA), an Indian motorized cargo-dhow, has been freed and is heading to Mukalla in Yemen in order to take fuel on her way back to Sharjia (UAE). The killing of one crew member in the sea-jacking episode, reported earlier via EU NAVFOR, could so far not be confirmed. The in total 14 Indian crew are accounted for and all right, though vessel-equipment and -supplies as well as personal belongings had been looted. The Indian owner is based in the United Arab Emirates to where the vessel will return. Pirates seized the Nefya on Saturday and then used it to launch a failed attack two days later on the 265,000-tonne, Liberian-flagged oil tanker VLCC A Elephant. The sea-shifta thereafter abandoned the vessel, which they misused as mothership. Meanwhile EU NAVFOR confirmed and stated: "At 3:30 this morning (0030 GMT, 0600 hrs IST) the pirates who were holding the Indian dhow...abandoned the ship...and sped off to the Somali coast," the European naval force Atalanta said. "It has been confirmed that all 14 crew are safe and well," it said in a statement. It added that the ship was left 15 nautical miles off the north-east Somali coast in an area naval forces call the piracy "hot zone". Source : Ecoterra

MSC Napoli lessons DEVON is about to lose a major tourist attraction. Within a few weeks, the final remains of the MSC Napoli will have gone. The seabed will be swept for any last pieces from the wreck, and the barges that have been anchored around the containership since January 2007 will take the metal scrapped from the stern section to Rotterdam. The Jurassic Coast, a UN World Heritage Site, will be back to as it was before the Napoli started to break up in the middle of the English Channel and the decision taken to deliberately beach the vessel in Lyme Bay. Apart from memories of the looting as containers were washed ashore, most people will have forgotten all about the incident. But for the shipping world, the MSC Napoli will go down as a turning point for the industry. Owners and operators have learned a great deal as a result of the accident, and a new code of conduct is now in place setting out guidelines on best practice for the loading, stowage and labelling of containers. Local authorities realise contingency plans for a shipping disaster should include container spills as well as oil pollution. The police now understand the law of salvage. New techniques in wreck removal have been developed. And so the list goes on. But above all, the role of Sosrep — the Secretary of State’s Representative for Maritime Salvage and Intervention — proved to be invaluable. In the UK, one person is in sole charge of any shipping incident, providing a clear chain of command. Imagine what would have happened if a committee had been asked to decide whether the MSC Napoli should be towed to shelter and deliberately beached. Lives would almost certainly have been lost, and pollution inevitable, if the ship had split in half at sea. Yet few other countries have yet followed the UK, despite broad consensus throughout the industry that the Sosrep has proved his worth time and time again. Shipowners, port operators, shippers, salvors and all other interested parties should lobby their respective governments to take a lead from the UK.

Indonesia sets ferry inquiry INDONESIA has scheduled a July hearing to investigate how the ro-ro ferry Mandiri Nusantara caught fire on 30 May, killing five crew members. Well-placed sources close to the inquiry, commissioned by the National Safety Transport Committee, told Fairplay that investigators will be seeking to determine whether "operational and technical deficiencies" caused the blaze. Findings would be submitted to a maritime court in Surabaya, the source added. Also privy to the findings would be the director-general of sea transportation and the government, according to Bambang Erfan, transport ministry

Shipbuilding overcapacity warning from OECD The OECD Council Working Party on Shipbuilding (WP6) says the economic downturn has hit shipbuilding hard where new orders have contracted by up to 90% and cancellations have increased. This situation is likely to result in

significant excess shipbuilding capacity and the outlook is unlikely to improve for some time. There was agreement at a just-concluded WP6 meeting that governments should avoid actions that increase protectionism or distort the shipbuilding market, and that serious efforts should be made to restart paused negotiations on an international shipbuilding agreement.. The Working Party on Shipbuilding met in Paris on 9-10 July 2009 to discuss the impact of the global economic crisis on shipbuilding, government responses to the crisis and possible future measures to deal with the longer term effects. The meeting concluded that, in virtually all economies, the unprecedented financial crisis has led to a sharp contraction in investment, economic activity, employment and international trade. While initially shipbuilding was to some degree insulated from these effects because of very strong order books, in the last six months new orders have fallen by over 90% and cancellations are increasing. There is therefore growing concern about significant overcapacity. Few of the economic stimulus packages introduced by governments have directly benefited the shipbuilding industry. So far support provided to the shipbuilding sector has largely been restricted to improving liquidity through loans, and providing guarantees in order to assist buyers to finance orders and shipyards to finance new construction. There is a need for concerted action to address the growing problem of overcapacity in the shipbuilding industry and participants agreed that governments should avoid measures that increase protectionism and distort the shipbuilding market. 1st passenger-cargo ship crosses Taiwan Strait

The first combined passenger-cargo vessel heading directly to Taiwan from the Chinese mainland left on Monday morning. It was the first such sailing after the mainland and Taiwan started direct air and sea transport and postal services last December, when sailings of passenger vessels and cargo vessels began. The ship, New Golden Bridge II, carrying 630 passengers, left Mawei, Fujian Province, at around 11am and was scheduled to reach Keelung, Taiwan in about 10 hours. Fujian Transport Group rented the vessel from a shipping company in eastern Shandong Province to run the line. 'The direct sailing of the passenger-cargo vessels will be of great convenience to the exchange of passengers and cargo across the Taiwan Straits,' said Liang Jianyong, vice-mayor of Fuzhou City, capital of Fujian. 'Taiwan businessmen who have invested in the manufacturing industry in the mainland can directly bring parts to vessels,' said Mr Liang. 'Taiwan's fruit growers and aquatic products dealers can carry agricultural products with them.' Zhuang Fuchi, president of the Enterprises Association in Fuzhou, said the convenience of cargo and passenger transport would also bring more opportunities to Taiwan services companies on the mainland. Another route for passenger-cargo vessels from Xiamen, Fujian, to Kaohsiung, Taiwan will open in September, according to Ma Jilie, deputy director of the Fujian Transport Department. Mr Ma said the province would strive to realise regular operation of the passenger-cargo vessels by the end of this year. Source : Xinhua

Border guards seize poaching vessels in Russia's Far East

Russian Far East border guards have detained two Cambodian-registered vessels with Russian crews illegally carrying several tons of crab and fish, the local border guard service said on Thursday according to RIA Novosti.

The two boats were carrying over 65 metric tons of freshly caught crab and over nine tons of frozen fish. According to cargo documents provided by the captains, the crabs and fish were loaded onto the vessels in the exclusive economic zone of Japan. However, they entered Russia's economic zone without notifying the border service. The vessels will be escorted to a Russian port for further examinations, a border guard spokesman said. Russia banned exports of live crab in May 2007, but large volumes are still smuggled out of the country, primarily to Japan and South Korea.

Gulf oil tanker rates drop to 6-week low The cost of delivering two million-barrel cargoes of Middle East crude to Asia, the world's busiest route for supertankers, dropped to a six-week low, making it more likely that owners will decide to sell older ships as scrap. Rental income from the Saudi Arabia to Japan route fell 14 per cent to US$8,494 a day, according to the London-based Baltic Exchange. That's less than the US$9,700 that Frontline Ltd, the largest supertanker company, says it needs to break even on each of its vessels, including smaller suezmaxes that ship one million barrels. 'If it stays low through summer, then by the end of it we will see a lot more scrapping,' Nikos Varvaropoulos, an official at Optima Shipbrokers Ltd in Athens, said by email on Tuesday. Because a global ban on single-hull tankers takes effect next year, some owners will try to scrap vessels now to fetch the best prices, he said. The global fleet of crude oil tankers has expanded 4.5 per cent this year, according to data from Lloyd's Register-Fairplay, a shipping information provider. At the same time, worldwide oil demand is expected to drop 2.9 per cent to 83.9 million barrels a day, according to the Paris-based International Energy Agency. The situation contrasts with markets to ship non-oil commodities such as coal, iron ore and grains, where the fleet has expanded by less than one per cent, according to Lloyd's Register-Fairplay. Vessel demand has been buoyed by record Chinese imports of iron ore. Rates for delivering such raw materials have advanced as much as fivefold this year, climbing 4.1 per cent on Tuesday. Worldscale points based on the tanker industry's Worldscale system, rental rates on the Saudi Arabia to Japan route declined 2.8 per cent to 31.92 Worldscale points, the lowest since June 2, according to data from the Baltic Exchange. Worldscale points are a percentage of a nominal rate, or flat rate, for more than 320,000 specific routes. Flat rates for every voyage, quoted in US dollars a tonne, are revised annually by the Worldscale Association in London to reflect changing fuel costs, port tariffs and exchange rates. Each flat rate assessment gives owners and oil companies a starting point for negotiating hire rates without having to calculate the value of each deal from scratch. Source: businesstimes.com.sg

CASUALTY REPORTING

Ferry Sinks Off Haiti A 9 metre ferry, 'God's Will' , packed with passengers and cargo capsized Saturday off the coast of southeastern Haiti, leaving five dead and dozens missing. The boat, which set off from Anse a Pitre, near the Dominican border, overturned near the coast of the southeastern district of Belle Anse while en route to the port city of Marigot. The boat, apparently overloaded, capsized after being battered by strong winds and waves.

NAVY NEWS Danish militarization of Arctic

Denmark is prepared to establish an Arctic military command structure and task force ready to operate all over the Arctic. The task force will strengthen Danish competence in the area and can be applied at Greenland or in international tasks in the Arctic, newspaper Politiken reports with reference to Belingske Tidende. The higher focus on the Arctic is part of the Danish defence plan for the period 2010-2014 approved by Parliament, the Folketinget, on 24 June. The plans reads that “the growing activity level in the Arctic will change the geostrategic importance of the region and gradually result in more challenges for the Danish armed forces”. According to the plan, an additional 600 million DDK is to be spent annually on the country’s armed forces in the period, the Danish Defence informs on their website. Parts of those money are likely to be spent on a military strengthening of Greenland. Denmark also considers to apply fighter jets in monitoring operations and sovereignty protection at and around Greenland. The country might also consider to give the Thule Base a more central role in cooperation with partner countries. The enhanced focus on the Arctic is not all well received. Former head of the country’s Greenland Command, Axel Fiedler, believes Denmark has started an unnecessary militarization of Greenland, Berlingske Tidene writes. He fears that the Danish military investments in the area will give both Canada and Russia arguments for similar investments in their respective Arctic regions. As previously reported by BarentsObserver, a Russian document on state policies in the Arctic includes a higher military focus on the area. Also the recently adopted Russian National Security Strategy includes a high focus on the Arctic. Russia has stressed however that it is not seeking to militarize the region and that international law must persist. Source : BarentsObserver

RINA on a growth path: More than 200 Hellenic-owned vessels under RINA class

Italian classification society RINA has emerged as a “strong player” among Hellenic shipping companies during 2008, with 207 ships classed by the end of the year. They has a total gross tonnage of 4.16 million. The biggest market segment by far involves dry bulk carriers, with 59 of them classed. In terms of their gross tonnage – 2,096 million tons – they represent 50.32% of the total. In second place come passenger/ferry ships with 37 ships of 575,000 g.t., while tankers occupy third place with 38 ships of 561,000 g.t. or 13.47% of the total. Finally, there are also 14 container ships bolstering a gross tonnage of 491,000 or 11.78% in total. In a press conference held yesterday, Mr. Ugo Salerno, CEO of RINA said that during 2008 the company grew by 17% in terms of sales, which reached 183 million euros. EBITDA were on similar path with an increase of 18% to 30 million euros. For 2009 the goal is to reach 195 million euros in turnover, which according to the management is expected to be fulfilled. “Hellas is a very important market for us, being one of the biggest in the world” said Mr. Salerno. RINA has capitalized in this market as proven by the figures above. But, apart from this market the company has grown by as much as double within the last five years. In terms of vessels classed, today’s figures stand at 23.5 million g.t. in total, an increase of over 60% during the past five years. As a result, the company’s employees have also grown. By the end of 2008, RINA employed 1,300 people, while an additional 50 people have joined the company so far in 2009. According to Mr. Zolotas, head of the Hellenic branch, the company recently expanded its offices in Piraeus and is always looking for new people. Among RINA’s positive successes (although as Mr. Salerno pointed out very difficult to be repeated) is the fact that its vessels didn’t any detentions among three separate Port State Controls, most notably Paris MOU and Tokyo MOU. Another important issue that was discussed is the pace of new building order cancellations. RINA’s has had a minimal impact from cancellations thus far, with virtually no cancellations from yards in Asia (South Korea and China), while very few cancellations of small vessels occurred in Turkey. Mr. Salerno explained that this was because most of RINA’s clients involve traditional ship owners from Italy, while most orders are in already established shipyards, instead of greenfield yards, where a lack of financing has proven very difficult to overcome. Abu Dhabi Shipbuilding plans naval joint venture

The Abu Dhabi Shipbuilding (ADSB) said yesterday it was planning to create a joint venture focusing on providing naval support services in the region. The company's board of directors said it approved documents related to the project but gave no details. "The board of directors reviewed and endorsed the legal documents related to the formation of a joint venture company focused on providing naval support services and authorised the chairman to finalise the terms of this joint venture," ADSB said in a statement at the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange, where it is listed. "The board also reviewed and approved board committee charters, which have been updated to comply with corporate governance requirements." ADSB was established in Musaffah industrial area just outside the capital in 1995 as a joint venture between the Abu Dhabi Government, Mubadala Development Company and other shareholders. It has won several major contracts for the UAE defence forces since it was launched as one of the largest shipyards in the region. One of its most important contracts involved building six corvettes under a $750-million (Dh2,754m) deal awarded by the armed forces in 2004. Most of them have been completed and the last vessel is due for delivery this year. ADSB is the only specialist naval shipbuilder in the Gulf and constructs vessels in steel, aluminium and composite materials. Other recent new building contracts include 64 metres and 42 metres Source : Business 24/7

The future of two of Germany's largest shipyards remains uncertain after the insolvency manager for Wadan Yards' German facilities failed to reach agreement with one of its largest customers on completing two ships. The uncertainty was deepened further by the decision of STX Europe, the yards' former owner, to sell its remaining 30 per cent stake in the their parent to a Luxembourg company whose ultimate ownership is unclear. Marc Odebrecht, who has been in charge of the Wismar and Warnemünde yards since they sought bankruptcy protection in June, has been seeking agreement with Sweden's Stena Line on completing two vessels currently under construction. The ships are among the last four orders under construction at the company's yards, on Germany's Baltic coast. Mr Odebrecht announced on Friday that he had secured €190m ($266m) of bankruptcy financing to allow work on the remaining uncompleted ships to continue, with 90 per cent of the money guaranteed by Germany's federal government and the remainder by banks. However, Stena Line insisted there remained no agreement over what to do about completing the ships. Lars Rosumek, Mr Odebrecht's spokesman, said Wadan Yards was seeking a commitment from Stena to buy the outstanding ships at the agreed price, to allow the work to go ahead. The company believed it could complete the two vessels on time. "From our side, we have done everything humanly possible to allow this work to go ahead and preserve these jobs," Mr Rosumek said. The yards' future is further complicated by STX Europe's decision to sell its remaining stake in Wadan Yards' holding company to a Luxembourg company. STX EuropeSTX Corporation said only that the shares had been sold to Luxembourg-based Mandataria Finance. Mr Rosumek declined to comment on the sale. Source : www.ft.com

Asry completes 'Blue Marlin' repair work Asry has completed work on Blue Marlin, a 76,410-tonne semi-submersible open-deck heavy transport carrier belonging to Dockwise Shipping. Work on the massive vessel was carried out at Asry's half-million-tonne dry dock facility, which saw the ship's 63 metres breadth leave only six metres space clear on either side of the dock. The repairs carried out to Blue Marlin, which is capable of carrying structures of up to 73,000 tonnes, were the completion of her second special survey, renewal of approximately 30 tonnes steel in various places, blasting and painting of the hull, main deck and ballast tanks, and maintenance of valves, electric motors, steering gear and winches.

Kiwi ferries win in the wash-up COOK STRAIT ferry company InterIsland Line has won an environmental appeal, enabling it to operate its largest ro-pax at speeds up to 19. 5kt in coastal waters. The Marlborough District Council gave InterIsland owner KiwiRail approval to sail Kaitaki at 19.5kt in Queen Charlotte Sound and 18kt in Tory Channel. The council overruled waterfront property owners and environmentalists who warned that significant erosion was caused by the wash from fast ferries used earlier on the run, on the Cook Strait between New Zealand’s North and South islands. This consent will run for 20 years and will apply alongside existing licences for InterIsland’s other ferries, Aratere and Arahura. Under the Marlborough Sounds Resource Management Plan, if a ship can show it will not breach Environment Court-sanctioned wash rules it is a permitted activity and must be given consent. Boskalis secures €350 million credit facility Royal Boskalis Westminster has secured a new €350 million credit facility. The main purpose of the new facility is to finance the reinforcement and expansion of activities. Peter Berdowski, the company's CEO, said: "Boskalis' financial position continues to be strong. We are net debt free, have a solid cash position and expect to be able to finance ongoing investment commitments from our operating cash flow." "The new credit facility gives us the financial resources to further strengthen the business, and where possible expand it through targeted acquisitions." The committed credit facility, with a maturity of three years, is being provided by a group of seven banks consisting of Rabobank, ING, Friesland Bank, RBS, Deutsche Bank, Fortis and BNP Paribas. Boskalis said its strategy "is designed to benefit from the key macro-economic drivers that are fueling global demand in our selected markets: global trade, increasing energy consumption, expanding population pressures and the challenges of changing climate conditions." S'pore sees steady June container traffic The Republic's port terminals handled 17 per cent fewer containers in June from a year ago but traffic was steady from May, data from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore showed. The numbers show trade at the world's busiest container port has stabilised, and come as the Singapore government said the export-dependent economy leapt out of recession in the second quarter . But with little change in traffic at the port since April, and an uncertain outlook for demand in key Western export markets, analysts doubt whether a recovery can be sustained. 'The fate of Singapore's economy is heavily dependant on foreign demand,' Standard Chartered economist Alvin Liew said. Singapore relies on exports for about 60 per cent of its economy, and will report June exports data on Friday. Most containers passing through Singapore's port are transshipments between East and West, and so are a barometer of world trade. State-owned PSA International, which operates as a commercial company and runs ports around the world, also said container volumes at its Singapore port have fallen 17.8 per cent in the year to June, versus the same period a year ago.

Stena Line reports high-salaried urbanites boosting traffic across North Sea

Stena Line, leading ferry operator, has reported that new segments of the UK population have boosted numbers using rail and sail packages to Holland by 23 per cent this year. The new trend-bucking figures show a year-on-year increase for January to June 2009 on the Stena Line dutchflyer service across the North Sea. This success has however not been confined to just the last 12 months. The dutchflyer service, which comprises rail travel to Harwich from London Liverpool St and East Anglian railway stations, combined with ferry crossing to the Hook of Holland and onward travel to any station in Holland, has been experiencing increasing popularity across the last few years. Stena Line reported 39 per cent annual growth in dutchflyer traffic between 2007 and 2008. The success of the dutchflyer rail and sail package comes against the backdrop of a 2.8 per cent year-on-year decline in passengers leaving the UK out of BAA’s seven airports, Eurotunnel’s 15.8 per cent dip and a 5.3 per cent decrease in English Channel ferry traffic from 2007 to 2008. While previously, travellers using Stena Line’s dutchflyer service had been predominantly cash-poor students and backpackers, Experian ’Mosaic’ research to identify and categorise those currently using dutchflyer recognised that 26.71 per cent fell into the ’urban intelligence’ group, which subdivides into two main types of traveller: - Counter cultural mix - young, well informed professionals; trendy city dwellers - City adventurers - 20-something high-flying singles with pressurised, high-salary jobs; often London-based Lars Olsson, Stena Line’s commercial manager for travel on the North Sea, said, "The rising popularity of Stena Lines rail and sail service over the past year has been a significant trend in itself, but it’s interesting to note that the main travellers contributing towards dutchflyer’s growth are now young, trendy city-dwellers and ambitious, workaholic singles.

"These groups have started considering alternatives to air travel because they’re less cash-rich and even more time-poor than in the past, so the overcrowded chaos at airports and exorbitant departure taxes are deterrents. The dutchflyer service links London and East Anglia with Dutch cities via rail stations and ferry decks from £35 one-way. "We’re seeing a particular increase in dutchflyer passengers taking the overnight ferries so that they arrive at their end destination early the next morning without having had to pay accommodation costs in euros or endure 4am check-in for a flight".

In the UK alone, Stena Line offers two daily crossings on its Harwich to Hook of Holland route as well as over 30 daily crossings on its five different routes to Ireland (Stranraer to Belfast, Fleetwood to Larne, Holyhead to Dublin, Holyhead to Dun Laoghaire and Fishguard to Rosslare) providing fast and efficient

crossings with excellent onboard services and facilities.

Het roll-on / roll-off vervoer leverde 14% in tot bijna 8 mln. ton. Bron : Havenbedrijf Rotterdam

“The newest, largest and most luxurious ship in the world”, MSC Splendida, which was newly christened in Barcelona on Sunday, berthed at the Grand Harbour. This occasion was welcomed by the country’s leaders and members from both sides of the House of Representatives amid a gloomy season for the cruise liner industry. The industry has seen a drop of 50,000 to 75,000 passengers this year, Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Mario de Marco said when questioned about the season. He explained that two Spanish lines decided to drop Malta from their itinerary when oil prices shot to an all time high just before the economic and financial crisis hit the world. The two fleets previously brought to Malta some 100,000 tourists per year. However, figures should be back on track next year and should be comparable to levels registered in 2008. Larger ships, such as those making part of the MSC fleet, should make good for this loss with added value and potential in the coming years, he added. MSC Spendida was described as 130,000 tonnes of elegance, luxury, sophistication and style, can carry nearly 4,000 passengers at a time. She is 333.3 metres long and thus six metres longer than the Eiffel Tower and 67 metres tall, which compares to a 23-storey building. On reaching the reception area, guests experience a spectacle of space and light inspired by the diamond. A sweeping Swarovski crystal staircase takes you up to one of the coffee bars on board. An impressive grand piano decorated with 20,000 Swarovski crystals by artist Laura de Nadal is also part of the MSC Splendida experience. She is to call at the Grand Harbour every Wednesday in the spring, summer and autumn months of 2010. Meanwhile there are also plans for her to berth at our port in the period between January and March. The fleet’s managing director Domenico Pellegrino explained that Malta was always very high on their list of priorities. MSC, together with its local agents Hamilton Travel has been holding talks with the government along the past months during which they discussed the necessity of extending the Valletta Waterfront quay to accommodate such a ship. “Things can only thrive from good to better and from better to best,” Dr Pellegrino said. Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi explained that Malta, and in particular Valletta, were to become more beautiful by means of the ongoing port regeneration project and works at City Gate. However, he warned that there was no room for complacency and the government’s efforts, as well as the private sector’s, were to be continued, nurtured and strengthened. At the end of the ship’s presentation to the Heads of State, MSC Crociere together with their local agents Hamilton Travel handed President George Abela and Mrs Abela cruise tickets for two persons that are to be auctioned during the August Moon Ball, in aid of Community Chest Fund. Archbishop Paul Cremona, Opposition Leader Joseph Muscat and his wife were among those present on the ship. Source : Malta Independent Online

PANAMA CANAL LOCKS CONTRACT AWARDED

THE Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has announced that Consortium Grupo Unidos por el Canal will design and build the waterway’s new set of locks, a key part of the Panama Canal Expansion project. “We strongly believe that today’s awarding of the contract is the successful culmination of months of rigorous planning and stringent evaluation on the ACP’s part,” said ACP Contracting Officer Adriano Espino. “After identifying Grupo Unidos por el Canal as the consortium with the ‘best value’ proposal last week, we verified its price submission based on ACP requirements and regulations. And we concluded that the consortium has the resources to perform the project and bring it to completion.” Grupo Unidos por el Canal, comprising Sacyr Vallehermoso, Impregilo, Jan De Nul and Constructora Urbana, was one of three international consortia bidding for the largest and most important contract of the expansion project.
