Harvey, La., based Inland Salvage Inc. (ISI) was recently selected as salvor to conduct wreck removal operations of a 2,650 ton inland drill barge following an unsuccessful attempt by another contractor to salvage the barge. The barge partially capsized in Bayou Shaffer, near Morgan City, La., on September 4, 2011. IS I provided initial emergency response, dive and lightering services after the barge capsized due to Tropical Storm Lee's storm surge.

On notification that it had been appointed salvor, ISI immediately responded. It deployed experienced salvage and dive teams consisting of salvage masters and divers who had conducted similar operations on capsized inland drill barges. After extensive dive surveys, ISI COO David Grecho, brought together ISI's salvage management team, drawing from each member's particular field of expertise, to develop a salvage plan approved by Inland Salvage CEO Eli Zatezalo.

To coordinate and clear procedures for ISI wreck removal operations, salvage officers met with the Command Staff at USCG Marine Safety Unit Morgan City. Work began January 17 with the arrival of IS I's salvage fleet of two heavy lift A-frames, crane barge, tug boats, receiver barges and crew support vessels.

Wreck removal operations are currently underway and on schedule in line with ISI's wreck removal plan approved by the USCG. Working in zero visibility conditions divers have been separating the superstructure from the barge hull by burning all supporting beams and trunks at the deck level. IS I's plan calls for the separation of the superstructure, flotation and par-buckling of the main barge and chain cutting the superstructure into four separate pieces with final retrieval via heavy lift operations. Daily safety and job task meetings are conducted to ensure all IS I salvage personnel as well as the USCG are aware and prepared for each day's operations. ISI says the resources of all team members are focused towards one common goal – a well-planned and safely executed wreck removal operation. Source : MarineLog

Iran shipping line masks 'arms vessels Iran's state shipping line is reported to renaming many of its freighters in a bid to circumvent international sanctions on arms transfers and the clandestine supply of high-tech equipment for its contentious nuclear program. A study by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute released Jan. 30 said the state-owned Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines has renamed 90 of its 123 vessels since 2008, many with innocuous English names like "Bluebell" or "Angel." One was simply named "Alias." SIPRI reported the company has also reflagged a "significant percentage" of its fleet to further mask its clandestine arms shipments to Tehran's allies, such as Syria, and proxies, such as Hezbollah in Lebanon. This is also intended to confuse U.S. authorities striving to block Iran's acquisition of components and high-tech machinery for what Washington insists is a secret program to develop nuclear weapons. Western intelligence officials say Iran has consistently used IRISL to transport nuclear components, largely bought clandestinely through front companies in the West. "The Iranian ships are being shuffled like a deck of cards in a Las Vegas casino," observed Hugh Griffiths, S IPRI arms trafficking expert and one of the authors of the institute's report. "There is a constant game of cat and mouse being played and the renaming and reflagging of vessels is a way of trying to avoid inspection because of sanctions." The United States launched a crackdown on IRISL in 2008. Stuart Levey, then U.S. Treasury undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, observed that Iran's merchant fleet was "a critical lifeline for Iran's proliferation and evasion. … "Some of Iran's most dangerous cargo continues to come and go from Iran's ports, so we must redouble our vigilance over both their domestic shipping lines and attempts to use third-country shippers and freight forwarders for illicit cargoes." S IPRI reported that the Iranian shipping companies reflagging efforts, aimed at shielding their vessels from international scrutiny, has meant that on paper the Islamic Republic's maritime fleet has shrunk dramatically.

Until 2011, IRISL was ranked the 23rd largest container line in the world. Now it's not even listed in the top 100. In 2008, the U.S. Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control, invoked regulations designed to freeze the assets of proliferators of weapons of mass destruction and initiated sanctions against IRISL for working with the arms of the Revolutionary Guards Corps that oversees Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programs. That brought a swift response from companies around the world, which stopped dealing with IRISL. It was then, the Financial Times reported, that the Iranian company "started to use an array of deceptive and practices to conceal its identity and skirt sanctions -- including falsifying shipping documents, changing names and nominal ownership of vessels and even repainting ships. "It has also sought to assign vessel ownership to front companies outside Iran," the Financial Times reported. Most of the vessels originally identified as belonging to IRISL are listed as being owned and operated by companies that don't appear on the U.S. blacklist. These companies are invariably located far from Iran, in places such as Hong Kong, Germany, the Isle of Man, Malta or Cyprus.

But in most cases, international investigators have established from corporate records that these fronts are either run by IRISL officials or are wholly owned by the Iranian company. IRISL denies any involvement in clandestine weapons

or nuclear shipments but the unmasking of its corporate camouflage efforts underline the extent of Tehran's maritime operations. Lloyd's of London, the international shipping registry, says at least four IRISL vessels have been scuttled. Lloyd's issues large merchant vessels with unique identifying numbers and tracks them across the globe during their operational lifetimes. SIPRI reported that in October 2010, Germany removed ships suspected of being owned by IRISL from its shipping registry after the European Union imposed sanctions on the Iranian company. But, the institute noted, other EU members, including Cyprus and Malta, continue to have Iranian ships on their registries. Since the U.S. Treasury crackdown began, the United Nations has named three IRISL subsidiaries for international sanctions and granted powers to allow Iranian-flagged ships, and vessels carrying cargoes to or from Iran to be inspected. The U.S. Treasury later sanctioned five IRISL front companies and 27 ships and identified many IRISL vessels that had been renamed. Source: UPI

Essar Shipping profit jumps 43% Long-term contracts and offshore revenue have helped Essar Shipping Ltd to post a 43% increase in quarterly profit. Net profit rose to Rs48.9 crore in the quarter ended 31 December from Rs33.9 crore a year earlier. Sales rose 11% to Rs729.2 crore. Operating profit increased 39% to Rs242.3 crore. A.R. Ramakrishnan, managing director at Essar Shipping, said the increases were possible because of the company’s decision to enter into long-term charters of vessels as that provides a natural hedge against the cyclical nature of the industry and ensures long-term visibility of revenue and profitability. Revenue from offshore services increased 56.9% to Rs143.9 crore. Essar Wildcat, the company’s offshore drilling rig, is deployed under an 18-month contract with US refiner ConocoPhillips Co. starting September 2011 at a day rate of $285,000. Most of Essar Shipping’s fleet are on long-term contracts with minimal exposure to spot markets. The company owns 25 vessels. Source: Live Mint

Tug 'attacked' at Ghanaian port Mystery shrouds the alleged attack on an offshore tug at a Ghanaian port on Thursday with officials at

the port unaware of the incident.

The International Maritime Bureau’s Piracy Reporting Centre received word of a boarding of an offshore tug at the port of Takoradi at 04:00 local time. The report said four robbers armed with long knives stole ship stores and threatened the duty watchman before fleeing in a canoe. There were no injuries to crew, however.

One informed source said the tug, described as a supply vessel, was Liberia-flagged and about 2000 gross tonnes. However, the harbor master at Takoradi port was unaware of any such incident when contacted by Upstream on Thursday, despite having received two reports of activity at the port overnight, neither of which yielded anything untoward.

The report to the IMB is understood to have been made directly by the vessel’s owning/managing company, which, along with the vessel name, has not been revealed. Security incidents involving offshore vessels and structures off Nigeria often go unreported. Source : Upstream

NAVY NEWS

SS Lane Victory makes its move to Berth 46 Under the steady guidance of some "old salts," the historic SS Lane Victory pulled into the Port of Los Angeles' Main Channel on Monday morning, embarking on its latest mission - a move to Berth 46 at the southern end of San Pedro.

"So far, everything is good," said Anthony Broude, president of the ship's board of directors. The merchant ship - which served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam - had to leave its longtime spot just under the Vincent Thomas Bridge to make way for terminal expansions. For the rest of the year, the ship will be at Berth 46, south of the Cabrillo Way Marina at

the end of Miner Street in San Pedro. Monday's trip took just a little over an hour - the 1945 vessel left at 9:37 a.m. and arrived at the new dock at 11:06 a.m. At the group's new shoreside office, workers were hooking up water and power connections, and some 65 volunteers were busy unloading furniture. The ship is expected to move again around the first of next year - to nearby Berth 50. That could wind up being the vessel's new permanent home - or maybe not. The Lane Victory's final spot will depend on how the port's waterfront development proceeds, port spokesman Phillip Sanfield said. Broude said signage needs to be put up so that visitors will be able to find the ship at its new location. Source : dailybreeze

Yet another naval fire in Murmansk The Russian Coast Guard vessel Ural was damaged in a fire on February 7.

A fire broke out aboard the coast guard vessel “Ural” while it was docked in Murmansk. This is the third fire in a military vessel in only six weeks. The vessel was in dry-docking for repair works at a ship repair yard in Murmansk when a fire broke out in one of the cabins. Four of the vessel’s crew members were injured, one of them taken to hospital with light carbon monoxide poisoning after the accident, Komsomolskaya Pravda reports. This is the third fire in a vessel belonging to the Navy or Coast Guard (FSB) in Murmansk in six weeks. On December 30 the strategic nuclear-powered submarine “Yekaterinburg” was severely damaged in a massive fire and on January 19 a smaller fire blazed up aboard the nuclear-powered attack submarine “Gepard”. The latter was regarded by the navy as an incident and not classified as a real fire, according to Interfax. Source : BarentsObserver

Keppel, ConocoPhillips team up to design first ice-worthy jackup rig for Arctic

Keppel Offshore & Marine Technology Centre (KOMtech), a design and engineering arm of Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M), and ConocoPhillips are jointly designing a first-of-its-kind ice-worthy jackup rig to operate in one of the harshest marine frontiers, the Arctic Seas, the Keppel O&M news release said. This jackup rig will have dual cantilevers to optimise drilling operations within a limited time window. The rig is capable of operating in a self-sustained manner for 14 days and is equipped with a hull that is designed for towing in ice. It is also able to resist the impacts from multi-year ice floes and ridges as well as withstand certain level of ice thickness. This joint design project is expected to be completed by end 2013. Dr Foo Kok Seng, Centre Director, KOMtech said, "We are glad to partner with ConocoPhillips to jointly design this ice-worthy jackup rig for the Arctic Seas. The features of this jackup rig make it a cost-effective and promising drilling solution for the Arctic Offshore. In leveraging the combined expertise, resources and research findings of Keppel O&M and ConocoPhillips, we believe that this joint project will achieve significant breakthroughs in offshore Arctic drilling."

Keppel O&M has an established track record in designing and building rigs for harsh environments. It has delivered three KFELS N Class rigs for work in the North Sea, and these jackups can operate in harsh weather conditions in water depths ranging from 400-500 feet, which are 40% deeper than traditional units in benign waters. In 2008, Keppel O&M's wholly-owned subsidiary, Keppel Singmarine broke into the Arctic market, having successfully delivered the first pair of icebreakers built in the tropics of Asia to LUKOIL-Kaliningradmorneft. Keppel Offshoe and Marine is a global leader in offshore rig design, construction and repair, ship repair and conversion, and specialised shipbuilding. Source : PortNews

Ports of Auckland strike notice CTU President Helen Kelly says the Ports of Auckland management have left workers with few options but to issue strike notices in response to the Ports managements attack on their job security. Helen Kelly says “the industrial action is a response to the ‘take it or leave it’ offer and tactics from the Ports management – accept all their changes to the collective and work as a casual or be replaced by contractors. This would mean less job security for port workers and their families, fierce competition on wages and conditions, less safety for port workers.”

“Port management is acting completely irresponsibly to the workers and businesses of Auckland who may be inconvenienced because of this strike. They are putting the port at risk by insisting on unnecessary changes to the employment of these workers. The Ports offer leaves over 300 workers and their families facing an uncertain future, these are skilled workers who deserve some security of knowing they have some guarantee of work, and being able to plan their lives.” “This is an issue for all of New Zealand - casualisation is not good for workers or their families. This is

a growing story of working in New Zealand - even when workers already offer a lot of flexibility, they are expected to give more, and often to give up any hope of a structured and healthy life.” “We are supporting the Maritime union members in this action against further casualisation of their jobs, and loss of job security for them and their families," said Helen Kelly. Shipping giant ZIM fighting for its life The Israel Corporation and other companies under the control of Idan Ofer have yet to pour the $100 million safety net they pledged into the group's shipping company ZIM, Calcalist has learned. The funds were to be poured into the company pursuant to the provisions of the debt restructuring agreement between the company and its bondholders in 2009, following the financial difficulties the company found itself in for the second time. At the end of the third quarter of 2011, the company and its parent company stated they would activate the safety net. But although more than two months have gone by without any improvement in ZIM's results, the company's controlling shareholders have yet to pour the money they pledged into the company

In the meantime, the shipping company continues sailing into choppy waters, ending the third quarter of 2011 with a $66 million loss and expecting to post heavy losses for the fourth quarter of the year. ZIM is currently holding talks with a number of foreign banks to which it owes about $2 million. As of the end of 2011, the company is in breach of its financial covenant to these banks and has not been able to reach an agreement to change the covenants. Unless the company announces it has straightened out its affairs, it may face a demand to immediately repay its debt to some of the banks. Source: Israel Business

BOURBON revenues top EUR 1bn in 2011 Revenues of Bourbon, a global offshore services provider, for 2011 rose 18.6 percent to EUR 1 billion, the Company's news release said. Christian Lefèvre, Chief Executive Officer of BOURBON says: “Revenues for 2011 are in line with our strategic plan and, for the first time since our focus on offshore services, topped the symbolic bar of one billion euros. The improvement in the offshore vessels market continues in all segments and the fleet’s average utilization rate increased by 4.3 points in the year to 84.2%. This improvement is particularly marked in the deepwater offshore segment where the utilization rate for BOURBON vessels was over 93% in the last quarter of 2011. On average, charter rates held up well in the second half, despite being hit in the fourth quarter by the seasonal effect of the monsoon in South-East Asia.” In the fourth quarter of 2011, BOURBON posted revenues totaling 273.1 million euros, up 23.4% (same percentage increase at constant exchange rate) compared with the same period in 2010, boosted by the commissioning of 39 new vessels and the gradual improvement in utilization and daily rates. Compared with the third quarter of 2011, BOURBON’s revenues were up 8.3%, due to growth in utilization rates, (+6.1% at constant exchange rate). All segments of BOURBON’s directly-owned vessels were up. The only decline was in the “Other” revenues, mainly composed of external chartered vessels, which were down by 12.0%.

In full-year 2011 compared with full-year 2010, revenues were up 18.6% (+20.7% at constant exchange rate), largely due to very strong performance from the shallow water offshore vessel (+59.1%) and crewboat (+16.6%) segments, and the Subsea Activity (+15.5%). This growth is due to the fleet’s expansion and an improvement in utilization rates and daily rates.

During the quarter, BOURBON took delivery of 3 new vessels (1 IMR vessel, 1 shallow water offshore vessel and 1 crewboat), whilst 2 vessels (1 shallow water supply and 1 crewboat) were taken out of the fleet during the period. The fleet’s average utilization rate continued to increase, reaching 85.7% in the fourth quarter of 2011 (+4.6 points compared with the fourth quarter of 2010), compared with 83.4% in the third quarter of 2011.

In 2011, BOURBON took delivery of 39 new vessels, in line with its investment program. Compared with the same period in 2010, the average utilization rate was 4.3 points higher at 84.2%, confirming the market upturn. From one year to the next, the Europe & Mediterranean/Middle East Region saw strong growth (+45.4%), reflecting the positioning of vessels in new operating regions, especially Egypt. Steady growth was also seen in the American Continent at 26.8%, mainly due to the commissioning of 8 Bourbon Liberty vessels in Brazil. BOURBON also continued to expand in Asia, an area with high growth potential. Africa remains BOURBON’s main operating Region, totaling 61% of revenues. Compared with the fourth quarter of 2010, Marine Services revenues were 24.8% higher at 216.5 million

euros. This rise is mainly due to an improvement in the utilization rates (+4.6 points) and average daily rates of this Activity and to a strong performance from the shallow water offshore vessels segment which posted revenue growth of 51.3%.

Compared with the third quarter of 2011, the Activity’s revenues were up 8.1%, marked by an upturn in utilization rates in all segments. It should be noted that the slight dip in average daily rates seen in the fourth quarter for Marine Services is mainly the result of seasonal effects of the monsoon period in Asia. In full-year 2011, revenues for Marine Services were 20.1% higher compared with the same period in 2010, largely due to growth in the shallow water offshore segment, with an expansion of the fleet by 16.6% and the average utilization rate up by 14.3 points.

Compared with the fourth quarter of 2010, deepwater offshore vessels revenues for the fourth quarter of 2011 were 15.6% higher at 87.5 million euros, thanks to a solid increase in the average utilization rate (+5 points) and the average daily rate (+8.5%). Compared with the third quarter of 2011, revenues were up 7.1% due to an increase in the utilization rate (+3.5 points) mainly as a result of increased activity in West Africa and the Mediterranean (Egypt).

In full-year 2011 compared with full-year 2010, revenues were up 3.2%. One single new vessel was delivered in the second quarter. The period was marked by a steady upturn in activity in the second half of the year from a low point in the second quarter. Numerous contracts were renewed during the period, enabling daily rates to be ratcheted up, particularly in the PSV segment. Compared with the fourth quarter of 2010, shallow water offshore revenues in the fourth quarter of 2011 were sharply higher (+51.3%) at 66.6 million euros. The vessel utilization rate rose to 88.3%, up 14.1 points year-on-year, buoyed by the Bourbon Liberty series vessels and the commencement of contracts in Brazil. Compared with the third quarter of 2011, revenues were up 8.3% thanks to steady utilization rates (+1.9 point), despite a decline in average daily rates resulting from reduced activity in Asia during the monsoon season.

In full-year 2011, revenues saw a strong increase, up 59.1% compared with full-year 2010, thanks to: the entry of 15 new vessels into the fleet, mainly Bourbon Liberty series vessels; a sharp rise in the average util ization rate (+14.3 points) attributable to the full- time commissioning of the fleet in Brazil; a strong upturn in the contractors’ activity in West Africa; the beginning of a general improvement in daily rates. This performance confirms the success of the Bourbon Liberty series with clients in the context of a sharp increase in the activity of oil companies and contractors.

Outlook Increased demand for offshore service vessels should continue in the coming years. Significant investments by oil and gas clients and their 4-year prospects have been scaled up. The outlook for a greater number of active drilling rigs and contractors’ strong order books confirm the sharp market rebound. Clients will continue to favor innovative, high-productivity vessels, which is where BOURBON’s fleet of vessels is particularly appreciated. The process of replacing older vessels (deemed obsolete) on the market is set to gather pace to meet the increasingly stringent demands of oil and gas companies in terms of “risk management”.

As regards the increase forecast in utilization rates for offshore vessels and their daily rates, the market is anticipating continuing improvement in 2012 compared with 2011. Due to its unique positioning, its comprehensive range of services, the quality of its fleet and the competency of its employees, BOURBON will continue to reap the full benefit of this improvement in the market. BOURBON’s results will continue to be impacted by the euro/dollar exchange rate.

Paris-headquartered BOURBON is a major international player providing offshore oil, gas marine and subsea services. The Group owns a fleet of state-of-the-art vessels.

ITF backs MUNZ strike notice The ITF has spoken out to voice its support for New Zealand’s MUNZ maritime union as it places a new seven day full strike notice on the Ports of Auckland (POAL). Strike action would start 7am on 24 February 2012. ITF (International Transport Workers’ Federation) dockers’ section secretary Frank Leys stated: “Three weeks ago we warned POAL’s management that the port was teetering on the brink of crisis. Their failure to seek a negotiated settlement is bringing that crisis closer.” He continued: “POAL is trying to steamroller the port’s workers into submission. Today’s strike notice shows they’ve failed. The only way this situation is going to be solved is by POAL joining the union in a genuine dialogue. They have to do it, and do it now.”

Alfa Laval says it has won an order from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to supply Alfa Laval Aalborg exhaust gas economisers to vessels built for A.P. Møller - Mærsk. The order is worth about SEK230million.

The systems will use exhaust gases from the main engine to produce steam for a turbine which generates electrical power. Alfa Laval says the system has been developed in close cooperation with main engine and turbine suppliers for optimum performance and flexibility, and covers the electrical demand onboard the ship without operation of any of the generator sets. Delivery is scheduled to start in 2012 and be completed during 2014.

“This order is interesting in many ways – it is one of our largest so far, it includes newly acquired products and involves a couple of major players in the marine industry,” says Lars Renström, president and CEO of the Alfa Laval Group. “We can also conclude that 2012 has started well, with the booking of two large orders worth approximately SEK340million in total already during January.” Source : The Motorship

HARVEY GULF SIGNS CONTRACTS TO BUILD TWO ADDITIONAL U. S.

FLAGGED LNG-POWERED VESSELS Harvey Gulf International Marine ordered two additional 302’ X 64’, Dual Fuel Offshore Supply Vessels, bringing its total order to four. The contract signed today with Trinity Offshore is a follow on to the first two vessel order placed in October of 2011. Trinity will build all four vessels at their Gulfport, MS shipyard where the first Harvey Gulf LNG Powered Vessel hull fabrication was started last week.

In addition to being powered by cleaner burning natural gas, the vessels will achieve “ENVIRO+, Green Passport” Certification by the American Bureau of Shipping. The requirements for this certification include, among others, that the vessels be continuously manned with a certified Environmental Officer, be completely constructed with certi fied environmentally friendly materials, and have advanced alarms for fuel tanks and containment systems. Along with Harvey Gulf’s other vessels under construction, these will be the first OSV’s to achieve this certification, making them the most environmental friendly OSV’s in Gulf of Mexico. Harvey Gulf CEO Shane J. Guidry announced the signing: “Harvey Gulf’s decision to become the leader in “Clean” Gulf of Mexico operations has been enthusiastically accepted by oil company executives and was the impetus for adding two additional LNG Dual Fuel vessels to the fleet. These vessels, like their two sisterships, will meet the highest emissions standards that exist today and even higher standards that haven’t been created yet. We recognize the strong stance on environmental protection by the administration in the wake of the oil spill and are doing our part to respond to it and provide our customers support for their environmental commitments. John Dane III, Trinity’s President and CEO, stated “This follow on order is a significant milestone for our shipyard and will increase employment by hundreds at its peak during the next 36 months.”

Founded in 1955, Harvey Gulf International Marine is a marine transportation company that specializes in towing drilling rigs and providing offshore supply and multi-purpose support vessels for deepwater operations in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.

Windy Felixstowe to be blown away by London Gateway, says LG tout

DUBA I's DP World is telling shippers that its London Gateway (LG) terminal will knock Hong Kong's Hutchison-owned Felixstowe terminal from its high perch as the Britain's No 1 container handling facility in years to come. Speaking at a recent Logistics Leaders Network event, London Gateway commercial chief Peter Ward said his DP World facility would prove more attractive than Felixstowe which is 70 miles from London and exposed to severe winds that causes berthing delays. Our promise is to provide 40 per cent improvement in productivity," said Mr Ward of his terminal that will open by 2014.

"This will be about increased schedule reliability leading to shorter transit times and compressed lead times compared with Felixstowe, especially in high wind situations when Felixstowe has to close. Given our location, that will happen less," Mr Ward said. Mr Ward's comments followed his claims that only Rotterdam and Antwerp were in direct competition with London Gateway, according to London's International Freighting Weekly.

Earlier this month, Hutchison Ports, the owner of Felixtowe Port, noted how London Gateway would be a "massive threat" to business after its opening, reported the UK's Port Strategy. London Gateway hopes to handle 3.5 million TEU annually. "The new 18,000-TEU vessels that London Gateway is designed for, cost something like US$1 million per day to run, so we want to deliver the most efficient service possible and change some of the legacy practices in the industry," Mr Ward said. "Without this extra capacity the UK risks turning into a feeder nation for Antwerp or Rotterdam, and the extra costs of transporting goods from those locations will ultimately mean higher costs for

Singapore Shipping Q3 net profit up 22.2% Singapore Shipping Corp (SSC) snatched a meagre increase in third quarter net profit and posted a 22.2% rise in revenue year-on-year Seatrade Asia reports. In the quarter ended 31 December 2011, the Singapore-listed firm posted net profit of $1.81m, an increase of 0.2% over the same period last year. SSC attributed the marginal improvement to net income contributed by two vessels purchased in late April 2010 and early March 2011. Revenue during the quarter stood at $4.99m, up 22.2% from $4.08m a year ago. “The additional revenue contributed by the two vessels... was partially offset by loss of revenue due to off-hire of a vessel for drydocking in April 2011,” SSC said in a statement.

It added that its business model of a tonnage supplier to blue chip operators on long-term charters has shielded it both from the market downturn due to the globally depressed shipping industry and the ongoing financial volatility.

“We intend to continue to acquire vessels under such a business model,” SSC said. The company owns a fleet of four car carriers. Source : PortNews

MARITIME ARTIST CORNER

Above seen the latest painting of Willem Johan Hoendervanger of the cargo vessel Prins Willem V, The Dutch motorship built in 1948 at Hardinxveld, Netherlands by N.V. Scheepswerf en Machinefabriek, "De Merwede" Voorheen Van Vliet & Co. for Oranje Line, Maatschappij Zeetransport N.V., Rotterdam, Holland.

On May 10, 1940, when she was only two-thirds completed, she was scuttled by the Netherlands army on the New Waterway River at Rotterdam to block use of the waterway by invading Germans. Raised in 1945 by the Oranje Line. Cleaned, reconditioned and completed. Made her maiden voyage in Jan. 1949. Was a St. Lawrence canal size vessel engaged in regular trade between Northern European ports and the Great Lakes. On Oct. 14, 1954, she collided with the oil barge Sinclair XII, which was being towed by the tug Sinclair Chicago about 1.7 mi. east of the Milwaukee breakwater light. Two collisions -- the first a glancing blow to the starboard side of the Willem's bow, then a heavier one amidships, tearing a 20 x 8 ft. section of plate from the starboard side. Electrical and communications systems knocked out. Sailed eastward another two miles and sank, bow first, at 8:30 P.M. All 30 crew members rescued by the Coast Guard cutter Hollyhock. The Sinclair XII and Sinclair Chicago made port safely. A Coast Guard board of inquiry found both captains to blame. Ownership of the Willem was transferred gratis to the U.S. Army Corps of

The first major attempt to raise her in 1958 failed. Another attempt in 1961 also failed. 1965 the wreck sold at an auction to Charles K.
