Chamber to celebrate 75 years at annual banquet
As part of National Farm-City Week, Vance County Farm Bureau is sponsor-ing the 2012 Farm-City Week Breakfast. The event is set for Nov. 16, at 7:45 a.m., in the fellowship hall of First Presbyterian Church.
Bringing together members of the agricultural and business communities, the event commemorates the mutually beneficial partnership between the two. The event will feature speaker Sam Broke, Director of Farming at the Biofuels Center in Oxford. Also featured will be a full country breakfast catered by Ted Wheeler and utilizing a percentage of locally grown produce. Awards will also be given during the course of the event for the Farmer, Small Farmer, 4-H Volunteer and Com-munity Supporter of the Year.
The mission of the National Farm-City Council is to enhance the linkages between farm families and urban residents, provid-ing local organizations with educational
programs and materials about the people who grow their food.
In recent years, the major focus of the programs and materials has been on con-sumer and classroom education. Student activity sheets, teacher packets, placemats and bookmarks are just a few of the materi-als the Council has created to support its mission.
In the past year, thousands of materials were used in classrooms, at Farm-City ban-quets, at civic club meetings and in other
venues. Farm-City activities are grassroots in nature. Communities across the nation hold Farm-City events ranging from ban-quets to tours to job exchanges. Farm-City groups work closely with “Agriculture in the Classroom” programs in educating students and teachers about agriculture.
Registration deadline for the Nov. 16 event is Friday (Nov. 9). For information or to register, contact the Vance County Cooperative Extension office at (252) 438-8188.

Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce Mission
StatementThe Henderson-Vance County Chamber
of Commerce represents the interests of the business community in those matters that affect
the ability of local businesses to prosper and grow, and the ability of Henderson and Vance
County to attract new businesses.
On Aug 14, Chamber presi-dent John Barnes took the time to sit it on the STEPS for Self Sufficiency class being held in the conference room of the Employment Security Com-mission. The class, which is taught by Vance County DSS social worker, Sherri Alston and Henderson-Vance Cham-ber Work First coordinator, Connie Ragland, is a three week course designed to train, and retrain individuals for to-day’s workforce.
With the jobless rate in Vance County being among the highest in the state, many indi-
viduals are finding themselves in need of additional skills in order to land an interview, get in the door, and sustain gain-ful employment. This rigorous course presents this informa-tion in a “real-world” sense. Participants are taught tips on resume preparation, applica-tion completion, interviewing, follow-up, job searching and more.
Barnes took a hands-on ap-proach by letting participants know exactly what employers look for. He did a spontaneous “firm handshake, eye contact test” with all of the participants
and stated to them the impor-tance of making that good first impression. He also gave basic pointers on appearing confi-dent, appropriate dress, smiling and remaining positive.
In addition, Barnes offered reassurance that individuals in this county are not alone in their quest for finding em-ployment. “Unemployment, as we know it, is a systemic problem and the Chamber and other government entities are doing what they can to ensure that local businesses stay in the area and that new businesses are brought into the area” said
Barnes. He also explained the Chamber’s purpose and its role in the community so that participants would have a thorough understanding of the Chamber and what it does.
Participants in the class were encouraged and appreci-ated the knowledge that was shared with them by Barnes. For more information on eligi-bility requirements for the class and how to sign up, contact Vance County DSS at (252) 492-5001 and ask for a Work First social worker. A new class begins on the first Mon-day of each month.
Chamber president meets August STEPS class
The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Com-merce will be conducting their Fall Membership Drive from Oct. 1-Dec. 31. As a special incentive, the Chamber’s Board of Directors has autho-rized a 20-percent discount on membership dues for new members and they will not be billed again until January 2014. So not only do busi-nesses receive the discount, but they also get one to three free months depending on the month they join.
The focus of the drive will be today (Nov. 7) at the Cham-ber summit entitled “Plugged in, Productive and Profitable.”
The event will be held at the Vance-Granville Com-munity College Civic Center from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Along with other Summit sponsors, the Vance County Chamber will have an information and membership table manned by volunteers who will be avail-able to inform and educate po-tential members on the power of Chamber membership and to process applications as well.
“With the business com-munity’s continued support, the Chamber will be able to do more in the future as we prepare for another successful year,” said director of Member-ship Services, Rachel Hedrick.
