Tucked away from the crowded streets, cracked pavement and co* ee house-pretentiousness of other larger towns, the musicians of Carbondale have created a community that supports and fosters creativity. Local bands are the hometown heroes, setting the soundtrack to students’ and residents ‘weekend relief. With such great artistic vibrations buzzing about, it’s only fair the town receives the exposure it deserves.

Enter Carbondale Rocks Revival, a celebration of local, independent musicianship. Along with showcasing homegrown talent, a number of artists from St. Louis, Chicago and the greater Midwest region will take to the stage during the weekend.

) e four-day festival contains 60 bands and spans nine stages. ) e event is the brainchild of Matt Longueville, Curtis Conley and Nic Shurman, promoters for Tres Hombres, PK’s

and Hangar 9, respectively. ) e locations will serve as the event’s venues along with the Varsity Center for the Arts, Sidetracks, Pinch Penny, Elks Lodge #1243, ) e Cellar and the Town Square on Main Street.

Hometown musical legend Jason Ringenberg headlines the event as Jason & the Scorchers take the main stage. Ringenberg, a former SIU student, has le+ an imprint in music not only locally but also historically. ) e musician invented the genre known as “alternative country” a+ er he moved to Nashville and formed the Scorchers. ) e artist’s rock in, uenced country sound has paved the way for countless bands and artists such as Steve Earle, Wilco and ) e Drive-By Truckers.

) e group pushed country into new and unexplored terrain and won over fans and critics alike. Combining the raw power and attitude of the then-recent punk rock explosion with the sound and pop sensibility of country, the group stood in sound all their own. Since their formation in 1981, the Scorchers have graced the pages of ) e Chicago Sun Times, ) e New York Times, Billboard Magazine and Rolling Stone. In 2008 the band was awarded the prestigious Lifetime Achievement in Performance Award at the annual Americana Music Association’s Americana Honors and Awards. ) e group will make triumphant return to Carbondale Saturday night at the Town Square Pavilion.

Organizers say the festival’s title serves as a statement to those who think the Carbondale music scene is dead. With revamped Hangar 9 opening last year, the Varsity Center for the Arts opening its doors to musicians and a slew of new bands emerging on the scene, the title of revival seems aptly named.
