Gujjars facing socio-political deprivation: ABVGM

JAMMU, Jan 6: Expressing concern over the plight ofGujjar Bakkerwal youth of J&K, Akhil Bhartiya Veer GujjarMahasabha (ABVGM) today said that Gujjar community isfacing socio-political deprivation in the State.

"Gujjars form a sizeable part of the tribal community in theState. Despite specific constitutional provisions for the tribals,they are deprived of reservation in several areas including theelection of Panch and Sarpanch", a press release issued by

ABVGM said.Gujjar leaders further said that

these deprived youth are being con-stantly lured by the Pakistani ISI tojoin militancy. In order to safeguardthe interest of Gujjar youth, theydemanded insertion of allocation oftribal sub-plan, proportionate to pop-ulation, in the ongoing BudgetSession of the Assembly.

"Though Gujjar community gotSchedule Tribe (ST) status in theyear 1991 but till date they have notbeen given the due reservation inLegislative Assembly, LegislativeCouncil and Panchayat level",Gujjar leaders said. They alsostressed for creation of GujjarRegiment in the Indian Army.

The delegation informed the CS thatdue to non availability of matador serv-ice in their area for over last one year.

The Chief Secretary asked theCommissioner Secretary Transport that

an immediate action be taken in thematter, a handout issued by theCommittee said. Later, the delegationcalled on Commissioner SecretaryTransport who issued directives to RTOJammu that immediate action be takenin this matter.
