Covering the 24 hours to 08:00 on Wednesday 22nd December andany anticipated service issuesThe following update was issued by Royal Mail Customer Service at 10:35 on Wednesday 22ndDecember.

Operational general synopsisDespite more heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures in some parts of the UK, mail collection anddelivery services are operating across the majority of the UKs 3000 postcode sectors.

Severe weather conditions are impacting upon some of our collection, transportation, processing anddelivery of mail in some regions, but we are doing all we can to keep mail moving and beingdelivered to customers as quickly as possible this week.

The impact of the weather conditions on our national mail network, including air, rail and roadtransportation, in addition to large seasonal mail volumes means customers may experience some delays tomail being delivered in some areas.

We are doing everything we can to deliver mail to customers in time for Christmas including:

Keeping each local situation under regular review so we can access more areas, addresses andcollection points as soon as conditions improve.

Using all available people and transportation to make additional deliveries to customers throughoutthe day and into the evenings this week.

Keeping our local enquiry offices open for longer so customers can pick up any items weve alreadytried to deliver to them.

Were really sorry for the unavoidable disruption and inconvenience caused to mail services. Youcan get the most up to date information on our operations at: www.royalmail.com/serviceupdates .

Premium services update - Special DeliveryWhilst were continuing to accept, prioritise and expect to deliver the majority of Special Delivery itemsposted before the last posting date of 23 rd December, the impact of weather conditions in some areasmeans some items may experience a delay as they move through our pipeline. This means we cannotguarantee next day delivery of all items in all areas so, to provide customers with clear guidance, the Special

Mail Centre processingAll of our mail processing centres continue to work hard to process as much outbound mail aspossible and to get as much inward mail as possible to the delivery offices they serve.

International mail servicesInternational mail is moving in and out of the UK although adverse weather here in the UK and insome parts of Europe may affect some transit times. Further information, including delays to itemsfor the USA following enhanced security restrictions, can be found on our international update pagesat: www.royalmail.com/internationalupdates .

Increased security measures delays some mail to USA Since November, the United States Department of Homeland Security has increased security measures foritems carried on passenger airlines. As a result, mail entering the US from around the world, and includingthe UK, that would normally be sent via passenger aircraft must now travel by other means, including shipsand cargo planes.

The vast majority of items, including letters and Christmas cards, posted prior to the last recommendedposting date of 10th December have been and will continue to arrive in the US in time for Christmas.

However, these ongoing security issues, combined with the impact of recent severe weather on themovement of mail throughout the UK, are causing delays to some items bound for the US. These delaysmainly affect heavier packets, but other items including Destination Sort bags posted under contract bybusiness customers are also affected. Were really sorry for these unavoidable delays and are doingeverything we can to keep mail moving out of and into the UK.

Since the middle of November and throughout the recent period of weather related service disruption inparts of the UK, we have implemented a number of contingency plans to ensure as much of our customersmail reaches the US as quickly as possible. In finding alternative, available routes and transportation to theUS, its possible that the delivery pattern of some items may have been interrupted and not all mail willarrive in the sequence in which it was posted. Handling significantly increased volumes of mail at this

festive time along with the complexity of reacting at pace to contingency arrangements, means were unableto track individual items for customers or identify exactly when in the current arrival patterns deliveries arelikely to take place.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and are continuing to work to minimise disruption toour customers, whilst ensuring we comply fully with the US directives and regulations.

Germany, Luxembourg, Poland, Iceland, Denmark, Netherlands and SwedenReports have been received from all of these countries indicating that mail services are beingdisrupted due to severe weather. This has affected road and air services and is likely toaffect both inbound and outbound mail to and all of these countries.
