Prophecy in the marketplace Steve Nicholson - Auditorium

How ordinary people can naturally do the stuff in the course of everyday life without being pushy or religious.

Steve Nicholson is the Senior Pastor of Evanston Vineyard, Chicago, where the church has served northern Chicago, Evanston, Skokie and the surrounding area for almost 40 years. The church has significant diversity, with no ethnic majority, and people coming from 55 countries. Steve is married to Cindy and they have played a major role in church planting in the Vineyard USA, and internationally.

Leadership lessons I have learned with Hope For JusticeBen Cooley - F1

Ben Cooley, CEO of international anti-slavery charity Hope For Justice, will share some of the lessons he’s learned setting up and growing an organisation at the forefront of the movement to combat modern day slavery.

Raising the next level of leaders for your churchSteve Barber - G4

Every church needs leaders, but how do we keep our leaders growing and developing with our churches, enabling them to multiply themselves so ministries grow and thrive? This seminar is not about leadership, but rather the multiplying out of leadership into the harvest that God brings into our churches.

TUESDAY 2.15pm - 3.00pm

Steve and Juliet now lead the London, South & East Region and oversee Hub Training, an initiative which focuses on training and equipping emerging leaders for life in ministry. They have two children.

The year of the Lord’s favourChris and Maggie Parsons - F7

In a world where it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by need and with increasing compassion fatigue, how can we, as followers of Jesus, continue to respond to His call for justice and compassion in our local and global community? Looking together at seven areas of world crisis this seminar is for those who have a heart commitment to justice and compassion with a longing to make this, practically, a year of the Lord’s favour. The seminar will include a presentation by Terra Montford, the Director of i-61; the Global Vineyard Network for Justice and Compassion.

Chris and Maggie Parsons presently serve as International Missions co-ordinators for the Vineyard in the UK and Ireland.

TUESDAY 3.30pm – 4.15pm

Jesus in prisonPaul Cowley – Auditorium

How do we change and how do we help the men and women in our prisons change? This question has been pondered by parents, pastors, politicians, educators, therapists, physicians, church leaders and lawyers. From Twelve-Step Programs to Public Awareness Campaigns and ever-changing Management Techniques, virtually every occupational sector offers ways of encouraging and equipping people to identify, address, and eliminate their bad behaviour, habits and addictions.

Living visionJames and Jen Rankine – F1

One of man’s primary motivators is vision. In our current cultural climate there are so many other visions competing for our hearts and minds. How do we firstly stay inspired to the vision we are called to, secondly, communicate it effectively to inspire others, and thirdly, live it out in all its fullness?

James and Jen lead Cardiff Vineyard and oversee 20s and 30s for the movement.

Resilient leadership: surviving and thriving in pastoral ministryJason Clark and Andrew McNeil – G4

Leaders usually stumble, fall and quit most often because they are not anchored in an unshakable grounding in Jesus. What shakes us is our own brokenness in the face of the challenges of pastoral ministry - with some shoves from the evil one. This seminar explores the grounding we need in Jesus to survive the stresses of pastoral life, and the leadership skills and practices that make that possible.

Jason, with his wife Bev, leads the Sutton Vineyard, which they planted 18 years ago. They are London area leaders for Vineyard Churches UK and Ireland. Jason helps lead HUB, the VCUKI training track for church planters and pastors. He also leads an international doctor of ministry in leadership for George Fox Seminary.

Andrew, with his wife Rosie, leads Birmingham Vineyard and is the Regional Leader for the Midlands, North and Scotland. He has 2 wonderful teenage daughters.

Why I’m passionate about international missions Steve Nicholson – Y7

Jesus calls us to make disciples of all nations! This seminar will help make the connections between the local and the international and will reveal how international mission both reaches beyond our own church walls and energizes our church community, winning our hearts for international mission and church planting.

Kids; The ‘Extra’ – Ordinary GenerationDave Pavey - Auditorium

If we’re honest, most of us have underestimated the significance of children in God’s kingdom. As long as they are learning stories from scripture and praying at bedtime, we’ve been content. But not only does the Lord say that He chooses to reveal the secrets of His kingdom to little children, Jesus also says that His kingdom belongs to ‘such as these’. God is waking His church up to the power, boldness and influence that children carry; power to bring healing, boldness to share the love of Jesus with others and influence to help their friends follow Him. Just ‘ordinary’ kids who understand that having Jesus in their hearts makes them extra-ordinary and gives them the authority to do extra-ordinary exploits as they grow in following him.

Husband of Andrea, dad to Nicole, Daniel and Levi, Dave has led the kids’ ministry at Causeway Coast Vineyard since 2004. He is passionate about seeing children both inside and outside of the church bringing the transforming light and life of Jesus to their worlds.

Church for everyoneChris Kimmance and Owen Lynch – F1

The key to getting rid of an “in/out” mentality is to discover Jesus’ vision for your town or city rather than His vision for your church. This model is messy and slower to grow than gathering Christians from other churches, but produces a culture where the traditional in/out boundary is blurred and almost imperceptible.Chris and Owen will share their experiences of starting

WEDNESDAY 2.15pm – 3.00pm

churches with a vision for the town/city rather than the church and the values and priorities that underpin this philosophy.

Chris runs Ashford Vineyard, in Kent, along with his wife Nic. Since the church was planted in 2010, it has grown into a thriving community of people committed to making church irresistible to people who don’t do church!

Owen Lynch with his wife Claire started Severn Vineyard in Bristol in 2009 with the intention of partnering with Jesus to contribute to the renewal of the city-region. Prior to this Owen and Claire served as Pastors with Trent Vineyard in Nottingham for 8 years.

The fine art of making good staff appointmentsPaul Williams – G4

Appointing new staff or volunteers to key positions is an essential part of the leader’s task. These decisions can open up exciting new possibilities for the whole team, but there are many risks attached to getting it wrong. Paul will explore three vital principles for making consistently effective appointments that can grow churches and organisations.

The Rt Revd Paul Williams is the Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham. Prior to that, he was the Bishop of Kensington, where he oversaw the Church’s mission across a diverse and dynamic part of West London covering six boroughs. During this time he was particularly involved in planting new churches and pioneering new forms of leadership training.

Running recovery programmesHelen Murphy – Y7

Leading people into freedom is tough. Helen and her team have spent the last 14 years empowering people to move forward and break free from things that have taken hold in their lives. Using examples like the Power to Change course and community groups, the team in this session will offer practical ideas on how to create an environment for people to find freedom from addiction.

Helen is Senior Associate Pastor at Trent Vineyard and oversees a number of areas including Small Groups, Pastoral Care, Girls’ Room and Compassion Ministries. She also founded The Arches.

Perfectionism: the poison in your leadershipWill Van der Hart – Auditorium

We may sense that perfectionism is unhealthy to a degree, but we may also believe that it has virtues that we need in order to succeed. What if we had it wrong? What if our joy was being stolen and our leadership was being subverted by a threat that we had previously believed in? If you feel that this seminar is not for you, please come along.

Will is Pastoral Chaplain at Holy Trinity Brompton and a director of Mind and Soul. His interest in emotional health is wide ranging, reflecting his broad experience in a variety of pastoral contexts. Will is an integrative and practical bible teacher who speaks at a number of national forums. He is passionate about equipping church

leaders to look after their own emotional health as well as empowering them to manage the emotional needs of their congregations. Will is the author of a number of books on emotional health and Christianity including The Worry Book, The Guilt Book and The Perfectionism Book.

Living Lightly: in our churches, our communities, and our worldRuth Valerio – F1

God has given us a wonderful world to live in and enjoy, we have been created to look after this world and take care of all its inhabitants - both human and other-than-human - and as churches and Christians, we are to lead the way for our communities when it comes to living lightly and sustainably in our world. However, the way we are currently living is causing immense damage, issues around living lightly tend to fall off the church

agenda and as church leaders we can struggle to understand why we should, and how we can, live lightly.

Dr Ruth Valerio is Churches and Theology Director for the Christian conservation charity, A Rocha UK. One of the country’s most prominent environmental theologians, she lives in Chichester, where she is part of Revelation Church, and puts into practice what she preaches in all sorts of fun and interesting ways.

Developing a culture of worshipKathryn Scott and Nigel Briggs – G4

This will be a Q&A session.

This seminar will explore how to create a healthy worship culture in your church. Kathryn and Nigel will share their experiences of growing worship and growing teams. This seminar is great for senior pastors wanting to

develop worship leaders in their church.Kathryn, along with her husband Alan, planted Causeway Coast Vineyard Church in 1999 after spending some years ministering in Glasgow. Their passion is to see lives increasingly transformed and the multiplication of missional communities throughout the whole of Ireland. As well as leading the church, Kathryn works as a songwriter and regularly leads worship at different national and international events.

Nigel writes songs and leads worship as well as looking after all things creative and practical as part of the senior leadership team at Trent Vineyard.

Don’t label me a PK!Rosie and Beth McNeil – Y7

This seminar will take an honest look at what it really feels like to be the children of pastors and leaders, so that we can understand the privileges and challenges from the child’s perspective and feel empowered to lead our families in a way which will bring life and joy to both parents and children. There will be room for discussion and questions.

Beth is 19. She has been involved in leading Birmingham Vineyard with her parents her whole life! She is currently studying Biomedical Sciences at Sheffield University and is loving being a part of Sheffield Vineyard. Rosie and Andrew love being parents. They lead the Vineyard in Birmingham and are the Regional Leaders for the Midlands, North and Scotland.

Toward a renewed civic imaginationGreg Thompson – Auditorium

If we are going to find the personal and social healing for which we labour, we are going to have to devote ourselves not simply to the work of personal repentance, relational reconciliation, and vocational re-direction, but to a much larger and in some ways more fundamental task: the task of civic re-imagination. That is to say, we are not simply going to have to re-inhabit and re-engage the lives of our cities, we are going to have to re-imagine the meaning and possibilities of our cities altogether.

From Citizen Khan To ISIS - How should we engage with our Muslim neighbours? Dan Green and Paul Phillips – F1

The Muslim community in Britain is diverse, growing and often in the news. In this seminar, Dan Green & Paul Phillips will discuss how followers of Jesus can best engage with their Muslim neighbours. The approaches covered will include challenging stereotypes, serving in practical ways, fostering community cohesion and speaking of Jesus.

Dan Green is the Director of Bridges for Communities, a charity that seeks to build understanding between people of different cultures and faiths. Having worked for 8 years in the Middle East, he is now settled in Bristol where he is on staff at Severn Vineyard.

Paul is married to Katie, has 4 children and has spent 11 years in the Middle East building Kingdom relationships with Muslims. Paul is also an assistant pastor at Winchester Vineyard.

THURSDAY 2.15pm – 3.00pmLeading your city into lifeMark Marx - Auditorium

Simple steps to help you begin a conversation with anyone, open up possibilities to pray, share the gospel and lead them to Jesus. After the seminar there will be opportunity to go onto the streets of Nottingham to put it into practice.

Mark Marx is part of the Causeway Coast Vineyard church. Mark moved to Northern Ireland in 1988, with his wife Linda and their three sons. He pioneered the development of the Healing on the Streets ministry, which has seen the church praying for people on the streets every week since Easter 2005. Adopted by many churches the Healing on the Streets model is spreading around the world.

Why some teams work and others don’t Jamie Pennington – G4

In this session we’ll explore how you can adapt your behaviour to get the best out of others. By the end of the session you’ll have had some fun, understand why some people really annoy you and have acquired some tools to make the team work better. What’s not to like?

In the past 20 years Jamie Pennington has attended 6 Vineyards and run training in a dozen more, aiming to help Vineyard “do people” really well. He runs a training company and he and his family foster 2 children. They attend Gateway Vineyard Norwich, and are currently gathering a pre-church crowd in the small town where they live.

THURSDAY 2.15pm – 3.00pm

Knowing your enemy!Jamie Watters – F1

There’s an unseen world all around us which affects our present reality and vice versa. Satan has ultimately been defeated, and yet he is still active, filled with rage and malice. He knows his time is short so he and his demons are desperate to do all the damage they can to the things God loves (mankind) in the brief time that is allotted to them. If Christians aren’t equipped for war against the kingdom of darkness, we will end up being harassed and left feeling defeated as individuals. In this seminar we’ll learn how demons can affect us; but more importantly, how to have victory over them, as you learn to exercise Kingdom authority.

Jamie pastors the Glasgow Vineyard where he and his wife Linda are developing a legacy culture that is hallmarked by radical activists and passionate lovers of God and people.

Gender equalityJenny Baker – G4

Men and women in the UK are equal under law, but their life experiences are very different. From what we’re paid to how we’re governed, in sport, media, parenting and work, inequalities between men and women perpetuate injustice and stop us enjoying the fullness of life that God intended for us. This seminar will explore what gender equality is, how it impacts us, why it’s important and how we can work towards a more equal society.

Jenny Baker has been an activist for gender equality for many years. She is the author of Equals - exploring gender equality in all areas of life, and has a masters in gender studies. Jenny lives in London, works for the Church Urban Fund, is a keen runner and belongs to Grace, a worship community at St Mary’s, Ealing.

THURSDAY 2.15pm – 3.00pmBeauty from ashes: how God uses our brokenness to bring healing to othersCourtney Thompson – Y7

In this seminar, Courtney will explore biblical themes of brokenness, examine Jesus’ brokenness, and expose her own brokenness in order to demonstrate how God’s redemptive work always makes beauty from ashes.

Courtney Thompson is a pastor’s wife, a mother of four, and a recovering perfectionist. She holds a bachelor degree in Journalism from the University of South Carolina and a master’s degree in Theological Studies from Covenant Seminary. She lives in Charlottesville, Virginia with her family.

Creating a culture that will engage gay people Ed Shaw – Auditorium

The gospel is for all and yet there are people inside and outside our churches who think it’s not for them because of their sexuality. They think that all we have to offer them is condemnation and so look elsewhere for what only Jesus can truly offer them – everlasting beauty, intimacy and family. This seminar will challenge us to build church families that offer same-sex attracted people what they are looking for elsewhere.

Ed Shaw is the pastor of Emmanuel City Centre in Bristol (an Anglican church plant) and part of the editorial team at livingout.org. He loves his family and friends, church and city, gin and tonic, music and books.

The long game: surviving setbacks and successes Chris and Fliss Lane – F1

Much is made of making a good start but what of finishing the race? How do you survive both setbacks & success? In this seminar Chris and Fliss will share from their wealth of experience, and offer five key pointers in turning setbacks and success into lasting significance.

Chris and Fliss Lane have been in the ministry for over thirty years. They helped pioneer the Vineyard Movement in the UK, and founded the St Albans Vineyard over 27 years ago – a church that they still lead to this day. They have four adult children and five wonderful grandchildren. In their leisure time, when not hanging out with the family, they enjoy touring France in their classic Triumph TR6 sports car.

Developing pastoral care Nigel and Jo Hemming – G4

This seminar will explore issues and expectations around healthy pastoral care. How can we authentically be a house, hospital, school and an army at the same time? How do we appropriately support people with great needs without being overwhelmed or diverted from our mission?

Nigel & Jo Hemming lead Winchester Vineyard - a place where individuals, leaders and the church are trying to remain inwardly strong whilst outwardly focussed.

4.45pm – 5.30pmTHURSDAY 3.30pm – 4.15pmWorking with partner organisationsTom Murphy – Y7

Over the years Trent Vineyard has partnered with various organisations; national and local, charities and other churches, to engage with issues as diverse as homelessness, debt, education and justice (including refugees and asylum seekers). Tom and his team will share some of the lessons they’ve learned along the way and some practical ideas of how your church might develop in these areas.

Tom is a senior associate pastor at Trent Vineyard, where he oversees the staff teams responsible for many of the core areas, including Sundays, kids, youth, young adults and outreach. He’s passionate about developing leaders, mobilising teams, starting new initiatives and helping the church serve the city.

The Kingdom of GodTre Sheppard – Auditorium

Jesus spent a great deal of time talking about the Kingdom of God... and our understanding of what He meant shapes everything we do, not only as leaders, but as women and men in culture and society. We can easily build a church and yet miss the revolutionary work of building Kingdom within a community or area of culture... and if we want to change the world and bring hope to every corner, we have to build much more than just churches. Come for a practical look at what we mean when we talk about the Kingdom of God.

THURSDAY 4.45pm – 5.30pm

Preaching with spiritual authorityAndy Smith – F1

All of us who preach and teach the scriptures want to do so with spiritual authority, power, and passion, every time. We also all know what it’s like to feel busy, stretched, and the pressure of having to deliver something week in, week out. In this seminar we will be talking about how to grow in our preaching, how to step out from underneath pressure and stress as we give ourselves to preaching. We will also spend significant time talking about ways we can learn to walk in spiritual authority and power in our preaching, so that those inside and outside our churches are impacted by the reality, love and power of Jesus and His kingdom.

Andy and Harmony Smith are Senior Pastors of Belfast City Vineyard. They also serve as Regional Leaders for Ireland for VCUKI, and have two children.

An experiment in love: the reimagining of American democracyGreg Thompson – G4

How can people with deep differences live together in peace? This is the question that animates Greg’s work on American civil rights leader and pastor Martin Luther King, Jr. Greg argues that King’s public ministry is best understood as an act of public theology in which he sought to re-imagine American democracy on the basis of a Christian theology of love—and that we have much to learn from his legacy as we engage our own cities and communities.
