Chess Round Robin 2017

Yesterday, 21 very excited students travelled to North Beach Primary School to participate in our annual Chess Round Robin. Certain games were very tense and nail biting. The two schools continue to be quite evenly matched with Dalmain just narrowly defeating North Beach (65-61). The students were an absolute credit to the school and I was extremely pleased with their sportsmanship and show of manners. Our captain, Tyler B’s thank you speech was well thought out and presented. A big thank you to Gemma V for very kindly stepping in at the last minute to help with this excursion.

On the 11th of August, TA5, 6 and 10 visited Herdsman Lake. Rod, Neville, Jeff and Ned were the instructors we met once we arrived.

My favourite activity was the spear throwing because we got to learn about all the different ways the Aboriginal people would hunt for their food. Neville showed us how they would hunt for food by making sounds so the hunters could pretend they were animals with different sounds.

After lunch, Rod took us into the Wildlife Centre and we got to see all of the different animals such as frogs, lizards and turtles. We were also allowed to go upstairs where we were able to look out and see the whole lake. At the end of the excursion, Rod took us into the classroom to show us his turtle, named Sheldon, and how plastic litter affects our waterways.

Hayden - TA 6

Last Friday, Year 5 and 6 students went on an interesting excursion to Herdsman Lake. It was a fabulous experience to see what Noongar people would do thousands of years ago. My favourite activities were the spear-throwing and building mia mias, which are what Aboriginal people built for protection. We did a competition to see who could build the best mia mia and our group won. One of the most interesting things that we did was the smoking ceremony and how we had to walk through some smoke.

Grace - TA 5 Years 5 and 6 had an exciting excursion to Herdsman Lake where we learned all about Aboriginal culture. When we got there the first thing everyone noticed was that the path around part of the lake was flooded from all the rain. There were six major activities. My absolute favourite activity was when we travelled a little bit around the lake and we stopped at a tree. It was called a cyclops tree because the seeds inside a little pod looked like an eye on a cyclops. You ground up the green pods with your hand, then added a little bit of water for it to turn into bubbly soap. If you rubbed it a lot, it turned into a lotion which made your hands silky soft. We had a fantastic day which was possible thanks to all the teachers and parent helpers.

The school was a hive of activity this morning as students participated in a range of experiments for Science Week. Teachers organised an activity and the students went from class to class to experience a range of different scientific processes. The experiments gave students greater understanding, through hands on activities, of biological, chemical, physical and earth and space sciences. It was great to see the level of enthusiasm displayed by our students and the innovative way teachers

used simple resources for such great outcomes. Thank you Mrs Te Wheoro for organising this most

successful event.
