THE AUSTRALIAN - YOUR SCHOOL Every year around about this time, the Weekend Australian newspaper publishes their annual Your School report which highlights the achievements of students and teachers in schools that scored the highest results in last year’s national literacy and numeracy tests. It gives me great pleasure in sharing Dalmain’s success with our school community. There are almost 10 000 schools in Australia and Dalmain was listed as 6th in the nation in terms of improvement 2009-2014. This is indeed a wonderful achievement and an uplifting result for our staff and community.
As quoted in the Australian, “It is true NAPLAN only captures the performance of students across three days a year, and a quality education means more than success in the tree Rs. But literacy and numeracy are the building blocks of learning.”
I wish to thank the amazing staff at Dalmain for their tireless work in providing the best opportunities for our students through a challenging curriculum with strong foundations in literacy and numeracy. SOCIAL DANCE (Tuesday 30 June) Tuesday 30 June is the final dance class in this term’s series of lessons. As usual, Todd has worked his wonders with our students and they are ready to trip the light fandango and demonstrate what they have learned on Tuesday 30 June. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend the demonstration lesson from: PrePrimary: 9.20am - 10.20am Year 1 and Year 2: 11.00am – 12noon.
In the evening the students from Year 3–6 will have their social dance at the GREENWOOD COLLEGE GYMNASIUM 6.30pm – 8.30pm. The earlier than usual start is to accommodate the inclusion of our Year three students for the first time in the senior social. Please come along and join in the fun – it is always an entertaining family evening. STUDENT ILL HEALTH During the last few weeks of this term and into next term we will be in the midst of the season where children often succumb to ill health. During the course of this week, our reception area has looked more like a doctor’s waiting room than a school office! Students who are sent to the office with mild symptoms are jollied along with some tender, loving care. However, if your child is obviously experiencing discomfort and is unwell, we ask that you make arrangements to have him/her collected from school and taken home to rest and recuperate. We ask for your support with this matter.

Dalmain Primary School Needs You!
The Dalmain Support-A-Reader Program has been a great success at our school since 1998 when it was first introduced as a means of giving children extra help and assistance with their reading. This great success is due to the kindness and generosity
of our parent community who have generously given their time on a volunteer basis. However, in order for this worthwhile program to continue as successfully as over the last fifteen years, we need more helpers who can give one hour a week of their time to hear four or five children read on a one to one basis. As you can see from the roster advertised in our newsletter, we have some days that still require tutors. As this is a teaching program, training is available in order to provide volunteers with the
necessary skills. The strategies you will learn are very useful when hearing your own children read. Training requires only forty minutes of your time. Tea and coffee are provided. We invite
all parents, grandparents and friends to volunteer for this unique program.
If you would like to assist, please contact Mrs Hilary Winterton (TA 8) on 0434 210 609 or email: [email protected]

Dalmain Primary School’s
Waste Wise Update
TA 8 Paper Recycling Team
“TA 8 has been given a special job by Mrs Ridley to collect all the school’s used paper. This is a very special job because instead of all the school’s used paper going to landfill it will go to the paper recycling centre and get used again and again. Not everyone gets the same job. Each person gets a classroom to collect
their paper recycling box.
After it gets collected we weigh all the boxes. Then we get the boxes and return them to the classroom. Some people have other jobs like the data collectors and the road patrol. Do you know that some classes
boxes can weigh up to 2kg and some classes boxes can weigh as little as 5 grams.
We would like every class to help recycle paper. Keep it up!”

Saturday, 8 August 2015 1.00pm - 4.00pm
We are having a Busy Bee to progress our Waste Wise
program and in particular to clean up the basketball
court next to the Pre Primary.
The worm farm and the compost area are now both
located on the basketball court and we are looking at
moving and setting up garden beds, trimming trees and
jackhammering holes in the court service to make way
for the planting of fruit trees.
If you can help, even for an hour, please let the school
office know. We will also require some extra tools and
equipment including wheelbarrows, shovels, pruning
saw, shears, rakes, large brooms and the like.
Duncraig Fire Station’s Visit To Dalmain
TA 7 and 8 were privileged to have the Duncraig Fire Brigade visit them on Tuesday morning to revise fire safety procedures and discuss the importance of smoke alarms in houses. Children examined pictures in the
undercover area to decide what ‘good fires’ and ‘bad fires’ look like. They also viewed a fireman in full uniform ready to fight a fire. Safety procedures and strategies were discussed in case of emergencies particularly at home. One of the most important points was making sure each family have a plan to all meet at their letter box in case of fire and for children not to play with matches. Finally, the visit concluded on the oval with a demonstration of the equipment used including a heat sensor and the ‘jaws of life’. All students had a turn holding the water hose whilst turned on and everyone pretended they were extinguishing a real fire. This
educational visit was informative and motivating and was thoroughly enjoyed by TA 7 and TA 8.
