We remember the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Revolutionary War, the signing of our Constitution, our Founding Fathers, and contributions of all the great heroes and heroines who laid the foundations of our country. One thing we often overlook in our celebrations is the tremendous influence a great revival had on our nation in its early years. “The Great Awakening” reshaped the spiritual landscape of the American Colonies and Great Britain prior to the American Revolution. John and Charles Wesley and the Methodist movement led the way in Great Britain while Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield were more influential in the colonies. Whitefield became an ordained Anglican minister, but was not assigned to pastor a parish. Whitefield crossed the Atlantic for the first time in 1740 and preached in Georgia, where he felt a calling to establish, manage, and fund an orphanage. In all, he crossed the Atlantic 13 times, visiting the colonies seven times. He died in Massachusetts on September 30, 1770, at the age of 55. In July we celebrate Independence Day. We remember the signing of the Declaration of

Independence, the Revolutionary War, the signing of our Constitution, our Founding

Fathers, and contributions of all the great heroes and heroines who laid the foundations

of our country. One thing we often overlook in our celebrations is the tremendous

influence a great revival had on our nation in its early years. “The Great Awakening” reshaped the spiritual

landscape of the American Colonies and Great Britain prior to the American Revolution. John and Charles

Wesley and the Methodist movement led the way in Great Britain while Jonathan Edwards and George

Whitefield were more influential in the colonies.

George Whitefield (pronounced “Whit-field”) was an early associate of the Wesley’s in Great Britain and a

fellow member of “The Holy Club” while they attended Oxford University in London. Whitefield became an

ordained Anglican minister, but was not assigned to pastor a parish. He began field preaching wherever he

could obtain an audience in places like the mouths of coal mines as miners emerged from their day’s work or

in open fields or parks, a tradition later followed by the Wesley’s and other Methodist preachers. Whitefield

crossed the Atlantic for the first time in 1740 and preached in Georgia, where he felt a calling to establish,

manage, and fund an orphanage. In all, he crossed the Atlantic 13 times, visiting the colonies seven times. He

died in Massachusetts on September 30, 1770, at the age of 55.

George Whitefield was a short, cross-eyed man, but he had a commanding, dramatic voice that could be heard

by tens of thousands of people at single gatherings in the days before microphones. Benjamin Franklin was

skeptical of the huge numbers of people reported as his revival meetings. Once, when Whitefield preached in

Philadelphia, Franklin walked through the crowd until he could no longer understand Whitefield. He then

calculated the square feet of the area. Allowing two square feet per person, Franklin postulated that on that

day, 30,000 people were able to hear and understand the sermon! After one of his sermons, Franklin noted

the “wonderful...change soon made in the manners of our inhabitants. From being thoughtless or indifferent

about religion, it seemed as if all the world was growing religious, so that one could not walk through the town

in an evening without hearing psalms sung in different families of every street.”

When George Whitefield died, he fulfilled his famous prophetic claim “I would rather wear out than rust out.”

Despite poor health, he had preached to the point of exhaustion one evening at the request of a crowd and

died the next morning. It is estimated that Whitefield’s sermon and writings reached anywhere from 50 to 80

percent of the American colonists from South Carolina to New England. He had preached at least 18,000

times to 10 million people.

Whitefield and other preachers of the Great Awakening preached an evangelical doctrine that called people to

a decision to accept Jesus Christ as their personal Savior. They taught that each person could have a born-

again experience of personal salvation and receive the assurance that they had been reconciled to God. The

huge numbers of people choosing Jesus were attributed to the providential outpourings of the Holy Spirit.

You might say that the United States was birthed from a revival movement. We would not have the same

nation that insists on justice, democracy, and concern for the less fortunate were it not for the Great

Awakening and subsequent revival movements. We need a new revival today to change a society marked by

violence, hatred, rage, drugs, crime, hate-speech, and vulgarity. If we bring people into personal relationships

with Jesus Christ and help them seek his righteousness, our country just might endure and continue to be the

land of the free and the home of the brave.

In Worship

Dan was the pastor at Overton First, Bear Creek in Houston, and St. Peter’s in Katy

School for Little Children

July is a month that begins with fun celebrations and ends with anticipation of a new school year. We are

enjoying a more relaxed schedule this summer. The heat has us staying indoors more than we want to. On

days that the temperature gives us a break we do go outside for short periods. Please dress your child in

weather appropriate clothing. The weather forecasters have said this year will be an active hurricane

season. I will consult with the school district as well as the Emergency Management Coordinator for

decisions that will need to be made as far as closures will go. You will need to monitor the Facebook page

as well as email. My prayer is we get relief from heat without a storm!!! We at SFLC hope whatever your

summer plans are you have a fun, safe, adventure.
