Oil slips below $116 onstrong dollar

NEW YORK, 9 Aug — Oil prices resumed theirdeclines on Friday, as the US dollar surged to a six-month high against the euro and expectations ofslowing global demand offset supply concerns over afire on key Turkish pipeline.

The US dollar enjoyed a powerful rebound againstthe euro, after the European Central Bank and the Bankof England both left their benchmark interest ratesunchanged, which made traders found reasons to sell.

Moreover, the central banks’ actions also boostedspeculations that economies around the world areslowing and will further dampen demand for oil.

Light, sweet crude for September delivery slipped4.82 dollars to settle at 115.20 dollars a barrel on theNew York Mercantile Exchange and continued to dipbelow 115 dollars a barrel in electronic trading afterthe close. Many traders regard 117 dollars a barrel asa key support level for crude oil. They say a movebelow this level suggests oil's recent slide is more thana brief pullback. —Internet

WASHINGTON, 9 Aug— A new study showsthat patients, whoreceive early treatmentfor Hepatitis C virus(HCV) within the firstmonths following aninfection, develop arapid poly-functionalimmune responseagainst HCV similarto when infection is eradicated spon-taneously.

Researchers from

University of Montrealin Canada publishedtheir results on Friday inthe US Journal ofVirology. In the study, researchers followed agroup of intravenousdrug users at high risk ofHCV infection beforeand immediately afterexposure to HCV.

They found that earlytreatment restores a rapidpoly-functional immuneresponse, characterized

by the simultaneousproduction of multipleanti-viral mediators.

Therefore, earlytreatment can restoreimmune response againstHCV and help eliminatethe virus rapidly, theauthors conclude.

US warns of muscle harmwhen heart drugs combinedWASHINGTON, 9 Aug — US health officials warned

the public on Friday about the risk of a rare type ofmuscle injury seen when the cholesterol drugsimvastatin is combined with the anti-arrhythmiamedicine amiodarone.

The Food and Drug Administration said itcontinued to receive reports of rhabdomyolysis, atype of muscle injury that can lead to kidney failure ordeath, despite a 2002 warning about combining thedrugs.

Simvastatin is an ingredient in Merck & Co’sZocor and Abbott Laboratories Inc’s Simcor, and issold generically. It also is one of two components inMerck and Schering-Plough Corp’s Vytorin.Amiodarone is an ingredient in Wyeth’s Cordaroneand is also sold generically. All drugs in the statinclass of medicines, which includes simvastatin, carrya potential risk of rhabdomyolysis.

But compared with other statins, the risk is “morepronounced” when simvastatin is given withamiodarone, the FDA said. The risk increased withsimvastatin doses greater than 20 milligrammes perday. — MNA/Reuters
