Mission Statement

To enrich the quality of life in West Marin by providing diverse cultural, educational, and community services in a well-maintained, environmentally friendly facility.

Welcome to the Dance Palace Annual ReportJuly 2019 - June 2020

What a year! From July 2019 to mid-March 2020, the Dance Palace held almost 1,000 activities—classes, conferences, weddings, theater and concert performances, memorials, meetings, a passel of children’s programs and more.

Then came COVID-19, and on March 13th, the Dance Palace closed its doors for the first time in its 49-year history. But closing the doors did not mean we stopped working; as always, we adapted to serve our community. Our first step was to locally distribute over 400 masks! We continue to take new steps every day by adding more online classes, literary presentations, concerts, art shows, and much more.

Seven months on, our Board, Staff and Committees (The Dance Palace Team!) are on track, moving smoothly ahead with the planning and work necessary to get past COVID-19 and into economic recovery.

Your support, and the investment made by you—our community—in the Dance Palace has been, and continues to be, critical for every step along the way.

Thank you for joining us on this journey. None of it happens without you.

THE DANCE PALACE AT 49 . . . AND COUNTING Bonnie Guttman, Executive Director

My office, just off the main lobby of the Dance Palace, is right in the middle of all the action. Since becoming Executive Director, I’ve watched a parade of people come through the building: from front door to back; Church Space to Main Hall; lobby to kitchen; or straight to the office window. I’ve seen the babies and the seniors, collected the after school kids off the bus and watched the adult yoga students arrive, seen people wander in and enjoy the art—on any given day, I’ve seen our community come through our doors, to visit us in this space. From my small (and admittedly clut-tered) office, I’ve enjoyed meeting folks whose visits, phone calls, emails, and donations were the surest sign I could have of this community’s commitment to the Dance Palace.

None of this is surprising, of course. The Dance Palace belongs to all of us--the originals who built it, the newcomers who venture in out of curiosity, and those who were first brought here when they were barely able to walk. There’s a LOT of us who make up the Dance Palace community; and I think it’s possible that if we all linked arms we could, quite easily, enclose the entire property in a giant bear hug.

In 2020, “agility” is our new way of life and “flexibility” is our lesson for the year. We all feel this. And like many in our community--perhaps even you--the Dance Palace has experienced financial changes. We have had a nearly complete suspension of programming—no in-person classes, events, programs, or rentals; however, 50% budget cuts, some cash reserves, a PPP loan, flexible grant money, and our community’s generous response to The Summer Campaign for the Dance Palace, have all kept us going and also helped under-write some exciting virtual programming—even online summer camp!

Future plans for more exciting virtual events include two great parties: our all-new online Community Awards Banquet in March 2021 and of course, our big 50th anniversary next year. We’re looking forward to that celebration and beyond . . . . We are already think-ing about our next 50 years and how we plan to be here with you.

We invite you to continue reading to learn about your community center and how our last fiscal year went . . . VOLUNTEERS

DANCING WITH THE DANCE PALACEThe Community Awards Banquet

The Community Awards Banquet is the Dance Palace's annual fundraiser and tribute to local heroes who have made a difference in our community through their years of volunteerism and service. This year's banquet honoring Wendy Friefeld (above left) and Jim & Julie Monson (above right) was a glorious, heartwarming event that raised a record amount from generous sponsors and attendees.
