It is rightly said that all leaders are managers but not all managers are leaders. Management is an important part of leadership. A person cannot be a good leader without being a good manager.

This can be understood with a simple example. Your 10 year old kid gets hold of your car keys and wishes to drive to Toronto to see all the wonderful things he or she has heard about.

Vision, desire, and a strong sense of purpose - all are present but the kid will not be able to execute his plans on his own. It, therefore, is clear that a clear cut vision and a strong sense of purpose is meaningless, if not put into action.

Some leaders claim that their job is to only define a vision and develop strategies for implementing that vision. This argument fails to pass muster under closer scrutiny.

People may have wonderful ideas and lofty ambitions, but without the knowledge and ability to execute the plans and oversee the necessary work, all the wonderful ideas and magnificent vision will fail to produce the desired result.

One other important thing to note is that the leadership’s worth is not calculated by the degree a person holds. Some people mistakenly believe that going to a prestigious university and holding a particular degree will make a person more successful as a leader.

Nothing could be further from the truth, as there is no hard and fast rule as to who can be a good CEO. Some legendary CEOs went to the top universities of the world, while others were college dropouts.
