With it, political protest is ex-pressed, but also social criticism aswell as romantic feelings.

This year more than 100 poets frommore than 50 countries accepted theinvitation to attend, startingwithRonWhitehead from theUSA toAndreasStiff from Austria and on to JulianeOkotBitek fromUganda.Artists fromRussia and India also came to recitetheir poems. The readings of ErnestoCardenal, Nicaragua’s most well-known poet, were, as always, one ofthemain attractions. The picturesque
colonial buildings offered an atmos-pheric frame for the many readingsthat entertained thevisitors far into theevening at various city places. Youngbackpackers as well as Europeantravel groups and many locals wereseen in the city, estimated at approxi-mately 10,000 visitors eachday. Auf siealle wartete neben den Lesungen einbuntes Programm mit Konzerten,Ausstellungen und Diskussionen.Der Höhepunkt war wie in denJahren zuvor der Maskenumzug,diesesMalunter demMotto „Wir be-graben Lüge und Täuschung.“ Dersymbolische Trauerzug zum Seewurde begleitet von Tänzen, Lesun-gen und Straßentheater. Dichter tru-gen in einem Sarg Lüge undTäuschung zum See, wo sie sym-bolisch begrabenwurden.Für die Zukunft planen die Or-
