Sunken Tree Bookshelf:
The open environment on the third floor of the building gave me the opportunity to create a custom design piece involving a tree with it’s base in the middle of the second floor and continuing up through to the sky on the third floor. A pillar serves to provide structural sup-port and houses the tree roots. A water drainage system is enclosed within the pillar to drain excess water down into the sewer and a debris guard prevents excess mate-rial from clogging the drain. A bookcase surrounds the pillar on all sides to hide the drainage system and pro-vide storage for printed media. Surrounding the tree is a skylight on the second floor providing ample natural light to the reading room below.
